I think the problem with writers & showrunners is that they think everyone’s interest lies fully in the story itself when that is almost never the case. in reality it’s carried by the characters. & when they treat their characters like they’re expendable & then turn around & ask why everyone is mad at them it’s like well what did you expect?  no one connects through experiences alone. we connect through the people who’ve shared them.

I got into writing because of the plots tumbling around in my head, but the further I go in my career, the more I realize just how much true fans are in it for the characters. You can take away the superpowers and the life-threatening disasters and the magic systems and the beautiful words. People want characters they can love, no matter how evil or selfish or heartbroken or foolish or too-pure those characters are. Look at fanfic–most of it isn’t even set in the same universe. Everything’s different but the characters, their emotional core.

Write characters people will love. Not because they’re perfect, but because they seem real. Everything else will follow.

do u ever cry because lucas friar was going to pick maya hart for exactly who is she is - someone who teases him a lot and hahurrs him and worried so much about him in Texas and almost kissed him in the campfire and is such a selfless person and amazing friend that she pushed her best friend towards the guy that she liked - and he was smirking so much when she pulled him in by the shirt which is something that maya hart, not riley matthews, does all the time and he’s probably thinking YEP I HAVE DECIDED ITS YOU ITS YOU

and then maya says that he picked riley and he’s just confused and upset because no, no, he picked maya and she explains and says that he had picked riley either way because she was becoming riley and he immediately thinks of the campfire and the huckleberrys and the worry when he was about to ride the bull and maya’s art and her selflessness and he’s internally screaming NO, NO, I PICKED MAYA but he wants Maya to be happy, just as always, so he swallows it down and knows that maya needs time and so he just turns to her and asks her what SHE wants to do because he just wants her to be happy

I mean do u ever cry

I cry because of this and the fact that the writers didn’t get to finish telling their story. I have a feeling there was much more to the whole “identity crisis” story arc.

People do realize you can love Simon and still ship Zoey and Max right?

One thing I really hate about that season is the Zoey and Simon thing. I loved the grown Simon, the happy Simon. With Zoey he is back to be sad Simon, always worried. He should have been happy with Tatiana. It is clear the thing with Zoey won't last and it is unfair to him. The character is just an obstacle for Max and Zoey and this isn't fair to him. I am Team Max all the way and I wish both to be endgame. But Simon to be just a place holder is a storyline I always hated in TVshows.

Hate diet culture so much bitches will b like “don’t eat processed carbs they’re so bad for you” like and??? So what?? God did not give us grain and stone to grind it with for no reason. Bread is inevitable. Bread is food for the heart and the soul. U think I’m gonna give that up in pursuit of instagram fitness?? U think I’m gonna deny myself the simple pleasure of toast with jam so I can endlessly chase an ever-shifting standard of beauty that ultimately means nothing? In 20 years I will no longer be beautiful and in 60 my body will be vacant food for other, smaller creatures. But the taste of fresh bread? Of homemade donuts and still-warm pie? I will carry the taste on my tongue into whatever follows this life. So like. Stop telling me I should diet lmao. I’m not abt to martyr myself just to get a man to look at me.

Anyone who can quote Thomas More is well worth the effort. The Prince has read Utopia? I found it sentimental and dull. I confess, the plight of the everyday rustic bores me. I gather you do not converse with many peasants. Certainly not, no! Naturally. Excuse me, Sire, but there is nothing natural about it. A country’s character is defined by its everyday rustics, as you call them. They are the legs you stand on. That position demands respect, not… Am I to understand that you find me arrogant? Well, you gave one man back his life… but did you even glance at the others? Ever After (1998) dir. Andy Tennant

I hate how people are calling rapunzel the queen of self isolation when Elsa literally has a song where she says “a kingdom of isolation and it looks like I’m the queen” and actually self isolated whereas rapunzel was kidnapped and not allowed to be around people and conditioned to think that people will try to hurt her for her magic hair

Elsa’s the queen of self isolating but Rapunzel’s the queen of actually functioning during isolation; Elsa’s ice palace doesn’t even have furniture what was she planning to do.

A 'strong female character'

DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN

  • a character who is physically strong
  • a character who is mentally strong
  • a character who is emotionally strong

ABSOLUTELY MEANS

  • a character who makes her own choices, even if they’re mistakes
  • a character whose point of view is explored at least briefly
  • a character who is the hero of her own story whether she knows it or not

And that’s just a strong character, really.

[rebloggable by request]

Well, first of all, WELCOME TO ONE OF MY PET PEEVES.

A female character does not have to be “strong” (whatever your definition of that is) to be a good character.

Women can be strong, or wussy, or emotional, or stoic, or needy, or independent, and still be legitimate people and interesting characters.

In our totally understandable desire to see portrayals of strong women (in reaction to decades of damsels in distress and women as appendages), we’ve somehow backed ourselves into this corner where the only acceptable portrayal of a woman in the media is a strong, kick-ass woman.  That is not doing women any favors.  It just leads to the attitude that you have to be ONE WAY ONLY to be legit as a woman.  You shouldn’t have to be Natasha Romanoff or Xena to be considered a good character.  Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Buffy as much as the next person, but that should not be the only acceptable portrayal.  It should be okay for a female character NOT to be strong, too.  Let’s take Molly Hooper as an example.  She is not the stereotypical “strong” woman.  But hell, she went through medical school, didn’t she?  She’s smart, and she’s funny, and she serves a story function - she is not a major character, but she doesn’t have to be.  But her character gets criticized because she pines after Sherlock.  What, you never pined after somebody?  Did it make you invalid as a person?  You never got a bit silly over a crush?  I know I did.  And I still consider myself a strong woman.  It should be okay for Molly to have a crush on Sherlock without getting the “oh, she’s so pathetic, what a terrible example, what a horrible female character” thing she so often gets.  Yes, because it’s so terrible that a female character should reflect an experience that like 99% of us have had.

Screw writing “strong” women.  Write interesting women.  Write well-rounded women.  Write complicated women.  Write a woman who kicks ass, write a woman who cowers in a corner.  Write a woman who’s desperate for a husband.  Write a woman who doesn’t need a man.  Write women who cry, women who rant, women who are shy, women who don’t take no shit, women who need validation and women who don’t care what anybody thinks.  THEY ARE ALL OKAY, and all those things could exist in THE SAME WOMAN.  Women shouldn’t be valued because we are strong, or kick-ass, but because we are people.  So don’t focus on writing characters who are strong.  Write characters who are people.

The only bad female character, if you ask me (and you did), is one who’s flat.  One who isn’t realistic.  One who has no agency of her own, who only exists to define other characters (usually men).  Write each woman you write as if she has her own life story, her own motivations, her own fears and strengths, and even if she’s only in the story for one page, she will be a real person, and THAT is what we need.  Not a phalanx of women who can karate-chop your head off, but REAL women, who are people, with all the complexity and strong and not-strong that goes with it.

This is why I disagree with the “damsel in distress” criticism of Irene in the last scene of Scandal.  Here’s the thing about being a damsel in distress…it’s only bad if that’s all she is.  If the character’s defining characteristic is being a damsel in distress, that’s bad.  But if an otherwise complex character with lots of other agency and actions happens to be in distress, then…that’s all it is.  She is in distress.  That happens.  Characters are often in distress, or there would be no plots.  Should a female character never be allowed to be in distress, at ALL, to be valid?  No.

A strong female character is one who is defined by her own characteristics, history and personality, and not solely by the actions or needs of other characters.  She is a person in the story, not a prop.  That is the best definition I can come up with.  Note that my definition did not involve martial arts.

That was probably longer than you were anticipating!  I’ve had that percolating for a long time.

you’re allowed to get up one day and just decide to change who you are. dress differently, speak up more, laugh out loud even though you’ve never liked your laugh, say what you want to, say hey to people you wouldn’t normally, get that confidence going. we don’t have to stay the way people see us out of the fear that they won’t like the us we want to be.

@luthienebonyx and I have spent most of the afternoon teaching @nire-the-mithridatist about the Absolutely Real Australian Things: the frullet, a tuckshop, thunder thighs, tall poppy syndrome and strine.

We live in the upside down. In every way.

Don’t you think you should enlighten the rest of us as well?

I would enjoy so much more to see your best guesses :D

Fair enough. Without any googling:

  • a frullet: a front mullet; the bangs to end all bangs
  • a tuckshop: a sweetshop
  • thunder thighs: they clap together
  • tall poppy syndrome: …something to do with WWI? I have no idea and don’t want to offend anyone
  • strine: now you’re just making up words and I don’t want to play any more

I wanna say one and a half. But which one and a half?

And I promise they’re all real things

ooh, tall poppy syndrome, I know that one! someone who thinks they’re hot shit and brags about it, and is about to get their head metaphorically whacked off by everyone else.

tuckshop would just be, like, a mini food store, right? one that sells ready-to-eat stuff?

strine has something to do with australian accents, I’m pretty sure

thunder thighs is a thing in US English too, someone with thick thighs, but maybe it’s different in Australia, idk

Nah, that’s not quite right about tall poppy syndrome. Tall poppy syndrome is more about being punished for excellence. The idea that if you do better than everyone around you you’re getting above yourself and need to be cut down to size. It’s a lot less satisfying and a lot more damaging.

But yes, Strine is English as spoken by Aussies. Mainly re accent.

For me its usually not that I can't commit to a movie, but that the format of a serial show is easier to handle mentally, because there is an over arching plot but each episode is its own episode, as opposed to being 3 hours of 1 story or thing. The format of media really changes how we process and interact with it.

Its why some stories make great tv but would make a lousy movie.

I love the history between cats dogs and humans because its really just... so much

Dogs evolved from wolves before they came into contact with people and were so social themselves that people and dogs found each other cute and naturally stuck together

Cats basically domesticated themselves because humans werent a natural predator and had big safe shelters for them and their offspring so all the kitties came to live with us and eat up all the pests so we grew fond of them hanging out in corners keeping the mice away and they eventually integrated into being part of the family

We co-evolved with cats and dogs so closely that new brain functions formed to give us all a burst of dopamine when we see each other because our brains all go "CAT!! DOG!! FRIENDS!!" to make us stay together to aid in each others survival and social needs

We transcended the species barrier with socialization because touch starvation can be treated with therapy dogs and cuddly kitties and the same synapses that light up when we talk to other humans light up when we interact with cats and dogs differently than with other animals

I just really like how we have this ingrained connection with other species strengthened over thousands of years that will probably never be broken and how weve so naturally kept it in the form of keeping pets around after we moved past what we originally needed each other for
