Deleting my Ao3 Fics (sussexbound)

Hey all, if you have ever read my Sherlock, Good Omens or Word of Honor fanfic on Ao3 (written under the pseud sussexbound), please be aware that I will be deleting it all from Ao3 Dec 31st, 2024. So, do with that info what you will between now and then.

I think there is some confusion because there was another pseud SamanthaLenore(sussexbound) that was deleted in 2020, including their tumblr @sussexbound. I don't know if any fics were also deleted at that time as they said they were going to, but as of today 14 November 2024, this is what their author page looks like:

hey if you happen to enjoy acd!sherlock holmes fanfic, or know of the sherlock author wordstrings, FYI that their site with their acd!holmes/watson fic seems to have been removed from its original URL. wordstrings put out a call for help to crowdsource any missing fic. in the comments, someone posted that they found this link which seems to be functional.

if you want to read some mindblowingly excellent canon holmes/watson -- which are the reason i even read the stories in the first place -- then i suggest you get into these stories. and if you have read them before maybe it's time for a reread!

And as always, download anything you want to preserve for yourself.

I asked about fics by Sideris a short while ago but I could not remember the exact fic I was looking for. I have remembered now that it was called Working It Out. Do you or any of your followers happen to have a link on the Wayback? I would be very grateful.

Reply: Yes, it's there. As always, download and save your own copy, as it may disappear at any time.

Working It Out by Sideris (111K, E, Johnlock) This story started out as a one-off. Chapter 1 (Epiphany) is unaltered and can still be read that way. John discovers it's Sherlock's birthday whilst Sherlock makes a series of disturbing discoveries of his own, leading them to embark upon a relationship that was never going to be easy. Please note that I have chosen not to use any warnings. The story may contain triggers.

May I ask how you were able to download it? When I try, I get an error.

Reply: You can't use the download button on the Wayback pages. You have to highlight and copy the entire text (CTRL-A, CTRL-C), then paste into your own document (CTRL-V), for example Googledocs, Word, etc. Much easier on desktop.

I am WAY impressed that you found that story by sideris on the Wayback Machine! Can you tell me how you did it? Like what search terms/commands did you use? There are several works that are gone from AO3 that I'd love to find. You don't have to answer publicly if you don't want to. Thanks!

Reply: I'm sure there are lots of better tutorials on how to use the Wayback Machine on the Internet Archive but here's my method:

  1. Find the link of the fic you want to retrieve. I do this by googling the fic title and author, which usually leads to a link on a rec list.
  2. Plug the dead link into the Wayback.
  3. If you're lucky, it will return a set of dates when the page was archived. You may need to check more than one date to find the most complete version.
  4. If you're unlucky, it may say there are no archived pages for that url. You can then try variations such as adding ?view_full_work=true at the end, or finding a link to an individual chapter and trying that.
  5. Very rarely, you can find the download version. For example, here is a download version of Bakers With Benefits by Raina_at (this is not a deleted fic, it's just an example). The template link is https://download.archiveofourown.org/downloads/PUT THE FIC NUMBER HERE/Put_The_Title_Here.pdf (or .mobi, .html, .epub, .azw3) This is trickier because the title may not be the full title. I don't know if there is an exact algorithm for how the title gets rendered. The title needs to have underscores between the words.

I hope that helps you, and if anyone has any additional tricks or tips, feel free to comment.

Hello there. Thank you for keeping this blog going and for the great content. Are you able to help with links to any fics by sideris or stonewingedangel. I went to revisit these recently and found they had been deleted.

I just reblogged links to some of stonewingedangel's fics on the Wayback that I found a couple of years ago.

I don't keep a directory of titles by every author. Please ask specifically for which titles you want and I'll see if I can dig them up on the Wayback. However, I just looked for "Making It Better" and "To the Gold of Frankincense Through Myrrh" and couldn't find either one there in complete form.

If you ask off anon, I can let you know what I have saved and send them to you. I don't respond to anon requests about what I have saved.

heyy im the anon that sent in the StoneWingedAngel angel ask, sorry for the last response i only get on here for fic recs. Would you have the fics scream, not the Kings men and shatter? tyy

Reply: I answered you in a PM, but in case you don't see it, or for anyone else who is looking for them, these are all on the Wayback Machine.

Shatter (only chapters 1 and 3, chapter 2 seems to be missing)

As always, download and save for private use, as these may disappear at any time.

Reblogging for Anon.

Please ask specifically if you are looking for other titles.

This fic is being taken off the Archive in fall 2024. If you want to re-read this version of RL in the future, you can download it and save it for private use.

Riptide Lover by jinglebell (114K, E, Johnlock)

The year is 1866. When John becomes swept overboard, he never expects to encounter a living creature of myth. When the merman absconds with John, the lost sailor must use every tool at his disposal to convince Sherlock not to kill him. But it seems that killing John Watson is not what the deadly, beautiful creature has in mind at all...

Victorian mermaid AU. Heed the tags. Complete!

Hello!! I recently came across two deleted fics on old rec lists that I've saved to check later and wanted to ask you and your followers if anyone's downloaded them or know any way to find them.

The first fic is Say It Loud by Itsallfine and the other fic's title is Follow Me and I don't know the author but this is the summary: John always thought it was inevitable that, someday, Sherlock would initiate a change in their relationship.

Thank you so much!!!

Avatar

These are both on the Web Archive:

Say It Out Loud by Itsallfine (5K, E, Johnlock) John needs proof of Sherlock’s feelings before he can make a move. Mummy Holmes is only too happy to provide, and works her devious magic on New Year’s Eve. It doesn’t take much.

Follow Me by LapOtter (2K, G, Johnlock) John always thought it was inevitable that, someday, Sherlock would initiate a change in their relationship.

There is also a podfic by consulting_smartass (orphaned)

Oh no! I'm probably only realizing this years after the fact, but it looks like Iriswallpaper has deleted their AO3 account. Does anyone have any of their fics saved? I'd really like to reread some of them.

Oh, sad. I hope everything is okay. This is the first I've heard of it. The latest archived versions from the Internet Archive are from early 2021, so maybe the deletion happened then. I found these fics anyway. Johnlock unless otherwise noted. Always download and save a private copy, as these can disappear at any time:

One-shots

A Quick Cup O' Joe (Sherlock/Chatterjee)

Callous (short poem)

Putting up Shelves (Sherlock/Chippy)

Surprise Company (Sally/Sherlock)

Variations on Hairstyles (belongs to Variations on Happily Ever After)

Why Would It Bother Me? (Formatting is wonky, but the fic is there all the way at the bottom)

Chaptered fics

Breck Verse (orphaned by the author several years earlier)

Heartaches by the Number series (I didn't check all the parts, but the first few work)

Life in Sussex (It says 11/? chapters but it is complete)

John Comes to Sussex (only chapters 1-2)

In the Name of the Lord (translation of a fic by Philomena85, only 24/37 chapters)

Underscored (only chapter 1, but there is a podfic here)

I did not find these online, but have private complete copies:

  • Variations on Happily Ever After
  • In the Name of the Lord

And these are the chaptered fics I could not find, and also don't have:

  • Fallout from the Magic Trick
  • Once in a Lifetime (Viclock)
  • This Must Be the Place (Femlock)

I don't want to alarm anyone, but I went to read some Katie Forsythe this evening and it looks like The Seventeenth Step/liquidfic (the only place I know of where her ACD fics are hosted) is about to be deleted?! 😬

Are we about to lose the text of these first rate fics? 😬😬😬

This site has actually been recorded by the internet archive! Here:

I got a request for a fic called "Romance of Wolves" by Eliane (author's name is not 100% certain) from around 10 years ago and since deleted. Does anyone know it?

A Firm Hand, Part Two Release + Related Fic Removal News

The second novella in the A Firm Hand series is out today! Links to buy are here: https://linktr.ee/elle__lindsey (I also regret not posting some international links last time so I will do that below the cut at the end of this post).

I also regret to say that I’ve been told that I need to take the fic down in order to avoid the novellas being removed from sale. I want to give people a chance to download it before I do so. The deadline to download will be in one week on February 14th.

I really hope you like what I’ve done with this story in the novellas and that you come to love Harry and Noah as much as I do. All my love to you all!

Thank you to @swissmissing for pointing out I forgot to link to the fic! A Firm Hand will be taken down from AO3 on Feb 14th for anyone who would like to download it first.

How to recover fic deleted from AO3 that’s NOT on the Wayback machine

Sharing this because I just found out about this and it blew my mind.

The short version of it is: The Wayback Machine is not the only backup/archive of AO3 content out there. It’s just the most user-friendly and immediately browsable.

THIS database on Archive.org contains most AO3 fics as text files, including plenty that are not Waybacked: https://archive.org/details/AO3_final_location

What you’ll need: A browser for .sqlite3 files such as DB Browser for SQLite, an archive manager (e.g. WinRar or 7zip), good internet download speeds, and potentially a LOT of free GBs in storage space.

Not needed but heavily recommended: A download manager such as HTTP Downloader (so you don’t lose the entire download the second your internet stutters).

1. Click here to get to the archive’s files. It’s going to look something like this:

ao3_current.sqlite3 and ao3_old_files.sqlite3 are metadata files. The .zip files contain fic, most of them in simple .txt format. The metadata files tell you which fic is in which zip.

The “current” metadata file is recent backups. The “old” metadata file seems to be fics archived until 2020ish.

2. First, download either ao3_current.sqlite3 or ao3_old_files.sqlite3. Now launch DB Browser for SQlite, then File > Open Database Read-Only > open the sqlite3 file. Now click on the Browse Data tab.

3. It’s going to look like this.

4. The “Filter in any column” field can be used for keyword searches in, well, any column of this table. Be warned, it takes a while to update, give it time, it’s indexing.

5. Here I searched for all fic which gets a hit for the “Avengers” keyword (usually fandom). You can also search for a specific title, author, description, etc.

Let’s try to locate the first fic on the list. Click on the field on the left - row 1, column 1.

On the right you’ll see the full content of that cell. The most important thing here is the start - ao3_01. This means that the fic is located in ao3_old_files_part01.zip.

6. Download ao3_old_files_part01.zip and open it with your archive manager. It’s 5.5 GB. This will take some time.

7. There are multiple ways to find the fic within the zip file. Probably the easiest way is to use your archive manager’s search/find function to locate the fic by keyword - author is a good bet here, or title if it’s unique enough - and extract that. This way you don’t have to extract the entire archive. Be sure to add a wildcard operator (*) on either side of the keyword.

8. Extract the file and you’re done. Note: It will probably be in .txt format, and might be in one giant block of text. Just select-all and paste it to a proper word processor to restore the paragraph formatting.

+ I suppose if you’ve got like a free TB of space you could just skip the metadata step and download all the zip files and unzip them and use a command line search tool for keywords, too. This will work with keywords like title, author and fandom that are part of the file title. The metadata file just contains additional info, like character fields, description, etc.

This isn’t a perfect remedy, there are still fics that got deleted before they could get archived here. But it seems more complete than the stuff on the Wayback Machine on average.

Let me know when someone downloads everything and makes it available in a way that normal people can access.

Hello! I hope it's okay to ask this, but I recently tried to re-read "The Red" by Belladonnaq and Traumachu on AO3 but it looks like it's no longer available :( do you happen to have any advice for finding an old copy or a downloadable version? Tried the wayback machine but it was a fic you had to login to read. Thanks in advance!

Reply: It's here, with a gorgeous illustration by @reapersun. Tip: Check all the cached copies on the Wayback. This was the earliest one. Copy/screenshot and save, it may disappear at any time.

The Red by Belladonna_Q and michi_thekiller (3K, E, Johnlock) RedRidingHood!Sherlock controls Wolf!John.

Hello everyone. If you love The Ghost in the Graphite I'm taking it down from AO3 in one week. Please download it if you ever wish to reread it in its original Mystrade form. ❤️

(I'm having palpitations at the idea of taking it down, but I will be taking it down. May it live on in PDF/MOBI/EPUB form forever more.)

I hope you are doing well. I read a review on an old rec list about a fic or a series called Falling is Like Flying series about Sherlock recovering from falling from a building. It’s been deleted off AO3. I’d love to read it and wonder if you help find it somewhere else? Thank you so much.

Reply: You are thinking of the series "Falling Is Like Flying" by NegativEvitageN.

Here is the link to the series index on the Wayback, from which you can click through to all of the individual parts. For the last 2 multi-chapter stories, it will just load the first chapter at first. Click on "Entire work" in the upper right and it will give you the whole thing.

These stories may disappear at any time, so save yourself copies on your hard drive for future reference.
