My most popular individual recs

I did a list like this 7 years ago and was curious whether the statistics had changed. Short answer: yes. All but one of these recs were made after that last list. I'm not sure what that means, as I would have expected older recs to get more notes just because they've been around longer. Maybe it's that there has been more thirst for fic recs in the last 7 years, or that the reblog culture on tumblr has improved.

The links here go to the recs, which in turn have links to the fics.

  1. Radioactive Trees in a Red Forest by maribor_petrichor (280K, E, Johnlock)
  2. He Was A Friend of Mine by SinceWhenDoYouCallMe_John (38K, E, Johnlock, John/OFC)
  3. Hello You by weeesi (20K, NR, Johnlock)
  4. Oh What A Night by anotherwellkeptsecret (100 panels, M, Johnlock) - Note that this has been deleted from AO3 but the link to the pages on tumblr at the bottom of the rec still works.
  5. A Promise Made to Be Broken by PlantsAreNeat (37K, E, Johnlock) - This was number 1 on the old list, and the only one to remain in the top 10.
  6. (Never) Turn Your Back To The Sea by DiscordantWords (39K, M, Johnlock)
  7. Roommates are for little people by alexxphoenix42 (69K, E, Johnlock)
  8. A Home For Us by sussexbound (30K, M, Johnlock)
  9. The Winter Garden by Callie4180 (31K, T, Johnlock)
  10. Pygmalion by ancientreader (9K, T, Johnlock)

Top 10 Sherlock fics by kudos in 2023

Top 10 fics completed in 2023 that garnered the most kudos on AO3. Excluded: chaptered "fics" that are actually collections of standalone ficlets and crossovers that are mostly about the other fandom. Fics that began posting earlier (in some cases, years earlier) obviously have the advantage of more time to rack up kudos. Kudo counts as of 2 Jan 2024.

1. 1,720 kudos: The Case of the Man Who Was Wanted by MyDearLadyDisdain (232K, M, Sherlock/Harry Potter) After an inexplicable case in Surrey, Sherlock is after the strangest criminal he's ever encountered: a mass murderer, that has eluded the authorities for almost 14 years. Unfortunately, Sherlock Holmes is the only one that can see right away that this Harry Potter character is completely innocent. And hang on, is that tea set floating?

2. 1,682 kudos: Shift by stopthat (48K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock is tired. John senses a shift.

3. 1,102 kudos: Ride On by Silvergirl (38K, E, Johnlock) After the disastrous reveal at the Landmark, John tells Sherlock there can be no excuse for what he’s done, and no forgiveness. Sherlock leaves London and starts a new life, and not even the British Government knows where. It’s up to John to track him down and make things right, with a trip around the world and a clue only John would recognize.

4. 851 kudos: Till Death Do Us Part (Not Yet, Not Yet) by Civilized_muppets (8K, T, Johnlock) In which Sherlock and John have been married for years, not that any member of the yard has ever heard of John, much less that Sherlock was married at all, until John is kidnapped from Afghanistan.

5. 797 kudos: The story of the Forgotten Wallet. by Headphones_on_the_Skull (25K, E, Johnlock) Just some dirty Alpha/Omega Johnlock porn.

6. 788 kudos: Nothing to Celebrate by DiscordantWords (30K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes is back from the dead. Things only get worse from there.

7. 726 kudos: A Tale of Two Soldiers by batslikepastel (14K, T, Johnlock, Jolto, Mystrade) It's Christmas, and Sherlock and John are finally flatmates again after the tumultuous events of the previous year. But a sudden revelation about John's sexuality and James Sholto's unexpected presence throw a wrench into Sherlock's plans, and his jealousy threatens to overwhelm him even as John remains blithely oblivious. Their relationship has reached a turning point, and the ball is in John's court now.

8. 671 kudos: Nightjet by khorazir (22K, M, Johnlock) Officially deceased for eighteen months and still looking for the last remainders of Moriarty’s criminal empire, an exhausted Sherlock boards a night train in Germany to bring him to his next hunting ground. Due to a mishap with the sleeper cars, he is forced to share a compartment with a stranger – who turns out to be not quite as strange as Sherlock thought. The universe isn’t lazy, after all …

9. 646 kudos: Our Love Keeps the Things It Finds by her_ladyships_soap (25K, T, Mystrade) Everyone has a soulmate. Everyone. It's simple human biology. Over the course of every person's life, they develop tattoos of the things their soulmate loves most. Though he has always disliked the concept, Mycroft Holmes is painted from head to toe with dozens of brightly-coloured tattoos. Greg Lestrade, once-firm believer and hopeless romantic, has just nine. They are all quietly sophisticated, sketched in smooth shades of black and grey and easy to hide. Neither of them has gained a tattoo in years. But when they both suddenly find new markings, things finally fall into place.

10. 636 kudos: In Fine Spirits by EventHorizon (189K, M, Mystrade, Johnlock) A very upscale bar/private club needs a bartender and scruffy, punky Greg Lestrade is certain he has the right skills (and needs the job), so walks in to apply in person. He didn't realize that someone else he knew works there, also. Though… 'knew' probably isn't the proper term for a one-night stand where you didn't even learn their name during the fun…

Johnlock fics I read in 2023

This is everything I read in the Sherlock Holmes fandom last year that made it into my bookmarks. So while I may not have read enough to make a selected "best of" list, consider these the ones that made it past all my internal selection criteria and are deserving of a spotlight. A few of these were completed prior to 2023.

A Case of You by Silvergirl (17K, M, Johnlock, Sherlock/OMC) Sherlock is marrying an American, and at the rehearsal dinner, best man John makes a drunken love confession he doesn’t remember the next day. Badly hungover, John can't find anyone to tell him what the hell happened to the wedding, where the grooms are, or how he can put it right so that Sherlock can be happy. But what if he's dead wrong about what will make Sherlock happy?

A Midnight Clear by khorazir (16K, T, Johnlock) It’s Christmas Eve, and Sherlock is working. Because that’s what he does. He doesn’t need Christmas, or holiday cheer, or even company. He’s fine on his own, thank you very much – until a series of strange encounters on his way back to Baker Street makes him reconsider.

A Story That Is Almost, But Not Quite, Entirely Unlike Blue Carbuncle by Iwantthatcoat (16K, M, Johnlock) It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the Holmes Family is all set to have one of those unimaginable Christmas dinners— but the game is afoot, as Mummy’s friend is caught up in a Christmas mystery.

An Elegant Solution by ArwaMachine (19K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock finds himself unspeakably aroused by the idea of John with another man. Problem is, the only man Sherlock will permit be with John is Sherlock himself. Seems like an unsolvable problem. ... or is it?

An Ocean Away by westernredcedar (14K, T, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes has been gone for twenty long years, time enough for John Watson's daughter to make it all the way to Harvard University.

Avast Ye Merry Gentlemen by StellaCartography (10K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock is not a Christmas person. John decides it's Christmas that needs changing.

Bright Blue Ink by 13_33 (13K, G, Johnlock, Warstan) When one of my patients asks me about my relationship with Sherlock Holmes, the great detective, I answer this: I am his chronicler, his assistant in solving crimes, his confidant and friend. Of course, all these terms hold true, now as then, at the beginning of our shared history. But just as in a family portrait you can only see the put-on smiles and never the real faces of the people, they were only part of what made up my true relationship with Holmes. I know him, I then add; I know him well. [ACD]

Deductive Reasoning by cormorant (8K, T, Johnlock) John finds out that Sherlock has assumed for a while that their relationship was romantic, and feels like maybe he should have been notified about that.

Doting Husbands by Calais_Reno (16K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock takes on a new hobby: writing a story. If only something would happen! Takes place a year after the ending of Wooing Sherlock Holmes. He and John have been married for a year, still retired, living in Sussex.

Full Mount by ArwaMachine (54K, E, Johnlock) After Sherlock unceremoniously returns from the dead, John finds himself inexplicably angry all the time. So he does what any emotionally-constipated British man does: he joins a Mixed Martial Arts gym. As John throws himself into the sport and joins in on underground no-holds-barred brawls, situations arise that just might force John to face what is really going on underneath all the rage.

Indefinite Lines by ArwaMachine (298K, E, Johnlock) When two lines, inclined towards each other, are extended indefinitely, it is inevitable that they meet. Upon meeting, the lines become something new. Together. Perhaps it’s been like that from the beginning for Sherlock and John—their lives weaving together, inclined towards one another, moving closer and closer to something greater than themselves.

Live from the Morgue by disfictional (8K, E, Johnlock) Molly interviews Sherlock on her podcast, Live from the Morgue. John listens.

Lost In A Good Book by khorazir (68K, M, Johnlock) After chasing a criminal into a poky second-hand bookshop, John and Sherlock find themselves not only stuck in the building, but in L-space itself. With things still raw and unsettled between them after the events surrounding the Culverton Smith case, this adds another dimension to their predicament, which not only consists of finding a way out of the shop (while avoiding getting murdered by the criminal), but also to finally address the issues between them.

Nightjet by khorazir (22K, M, Johnlock) Officially deceased for eighteen months and still looking for the last remainders of Moriarty’s criminal empire, an exhausted Sherlock boards a night train in Germany to bring him to his next hunting ground. Due to a mishap with the sleeper cars, he is forced to share a compartment with a stranger – who turns out to be not quite as strange as Sherlock thought. The universe isn’t lazy, after all …

Nothing to Celebrate by DiscordantWords (30K, M, Johnlock, Warstan) Sherlock Holmes is back from the dead. Things only get worse from there.

Our Ghosts And This by LipstickDaddy (12K, T, Johnlock) An epilogue in three acts.

Primavera by Berty (9K, T, Johnlock) Italy in the springtime is as romantic as it gets but is it enough to free unspoken words and feelings after years of silence?

Salut d'Amour by ecoutes (11K, G, Johnlock) Despite Holmes claiming that my narrations of our cases were tainted with sentimentality, his preferences in music, I learned, were awfully romantic. [ACD]

Spare Parts by Raina_at (63K, E, Johnlock) Two years ago, Sherlock Holmes jumped off the roof of New London Hospital. Two months ago, he walked into John's clinic as if no time had passed at all. John hasn't seen him since. But then Sherlock knocks on John's door with a case he can't say no to, and while figuring out why the biggest manufacturer or synthetic limbs in the System is going after veterans, they also need to find out whether there's a way to fix what's broken between them.

stirringofbirds between my arms by NotusLethe (18K, E, Johnlock, Enola/Tewksbury) Over the years, John Watson gets to know his new flatmate, Sherlock Holmes, and the man's clever ward. [Enola Holmes]

Stretch by illwick (13K, E, Johnlock) Sometimes the lines get blurry. [Part 35 of a BDSM established relationship series]

The Adventure of The Reluctant Docent by mydogwatson (23K, T, Johnlock) Someone is killing the docents of London. Sherlock is on the case when he meets a very interesting docent.

The Case of the Freudian Dick Pic Slip by expoduck (11K, E, Johnlock) John accidentally sends Sherlock a dick pic he'd intended for another man.

The Mystery of the Missing Metallurgist by rudbeckia (14K, M, Johnlock) A young wife engages Holmes to find her missing husband. Lestrade thinks the man has absconded to America, but Holmes rises to the challenge of Proving Lestrade Wrong. The case turns out to be far more complex and dangerous than they first thought, and Holmes sends Watson to secure Lestrade’s help in bringing a criminal gang to justice. When Holmes gets injured, Watson realises where his heart lies and a little lighthearted banter leads to a tentative confession. [ACD]

The Silence Between the Notes by J_Baillier (44K, M, Johnlock, Viclock) Lieutenant John Watson's days in London are painted in shades of grey after losing both his military career and his family. Could an unexpected request to travel to Vienna to track down the errant son of a wealthy family break the monotony?

The Wizard of Baker Street by Calais_Reno (23K, T, Johnlock) In which Sherlock is a wizard under a curse and John spends a lot of time as a cat.

‘tis the damn season by chrysanthemumsies (22K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock and John travel to Edinburgh to catch a homophobic serial killer in time for Christmas. They figure out how to use their words, more or less.

Trapezoid by SilentAuror (27K, E, Johnlock, OMC/ OMC) Corey Graham invites John and Sherlock to visit L.A. to consult on a project… at least, officially.

Yorkshire by lurikko (8K, E, Johnlock) They're in Yorkshire, in a house in the moors, for a case, only Sherlock keeps touching John. [Omegaverse]

My favorite fics of 2022

I didn’t get as much reading in this year, so the list is shorter than in past years but no less sweet. In order of length:

Indefinite Lines by ArwaMachine (298K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock and John find themselves faced with a series of seemingly disparate cases that are growing increasingly connected, increasingly personal. They must unravel the mystery laid before them by a particularly ruthless set of criminals before the danger is upon them, or else run the risk of being cleaved apart forever, lines scattered to the wind.

Slipstream by khorazir (290K, M, Johnlock) It’s going to be the last Tour de France for professional cyclist John Watson. Despite the hardships of cycling more than 3000 kilometres in three weeks, in blistering heat and torrential rain, over dangerous cobblestones in northern France and the mountains of the Alps and the Pyrenees, battling thirst, hunger, injury and exhaustion, not to mention bitchy rivals, doping allegations, and the ever scoop-hungry press, he is going to enjoy the ride, damn it. That’s what John keeps telling himself – until he meets his new teammate, Sherlock Holmes, who adds a whole new list of problems as well as an extra dose of excitement to John’s life.

The Last Envoy by Calais_Reno (127K, M, Johnlock) April 1938. Sherlock is a very human alien who comes to Earth with a mission he doesn't completely understand and quickly falls in love-- with the planet, the people, and a certain army doctor. There will be angst: war begins and he is caught up in events he cannot control, while still trying to fulfill his purpose in being here.

Matchmaking for Solitary Animals by ArwaMachine (71K, E, Johnlock) Upon moving back to Baker Street following Sherlock’s return from the dead, John finds that Sherlock is a bit more keen on entertaining gentlemen callers than he once was, a fact that seems to make John irrationally angry. Intent on proving that he’s not a total dick, John decides to make it his mission to find Sherlock a boyfriend. This, as it turns out, is the worst idea John has ever had.

Whirlwind by DiscordantWords (50K, M, Johnlock, Warstan) New job, new truck, new fiancée... John Watson, former storm chaser, has settled into a comfortable new life. There's only one problem: John's already married. And the the divorce papers he's been sending to his former partner, Sherlock Holmes, keep going missing. So with his fiancée Mary by his side, John reluctantly makes a trip to see him in the hopes of finalizing their divorce once and for all. But John arrives in the midst of a very active storm season, and Sherlock very clearly hasn’t let go of the past. Against his better judgement, John finds himself talked into riding along after one last storm.

Accidental Magic by Calais_Reno (39K, M, Johnlock) Soon after his return (TEH), Sherlock takes the case of a woman seeking stolen books hidden in her late husband’s library. He invites John to come with him. Working together after so much time apart, they begin to discover more than stolen books. This isn’t really a story about magic, except for the ordinary kind of magic that happens when people realise they’re in love and it’s time to do something about it. That kind of magic is the best kind.

Blue Plaques by JRow (36K, M, Johnlock) John’s engagement is off, and he is back at the place he feels most at home — 221B Baker Street. It’s been a bit of an adjustment (he does miss the regular hugs and snuggles) but John is happy, and it seems like Sherlock is too. John certainly loves working on a good case with his mad flatmate, so he’s thrilled when Greg asks for their help in figuring out how Colin Mahon is continuing to run his drugs operation while out on bail and under constant surveillance. It must have something to do with Mahon’s daily travels (on foot) to a slew of seemingly boring London sights. But in the process of solving this little mystery, will John accidentally reveal a secret of his own?

A Scandal at Paladia by disfictional (34K, E, Johnlock) An ill-fated visit to Uncle Rudy's drag bar unlocks a memory of John's past- a memory that wreaks havoc on their sex life. John has a secret, and Sherlock is determined to solve the case.

Jam by JRow (34K, M, Johnlock) John needs some time to recharge after the physically and emotionally draining case in Dartmoor. On a whim, he books a couple of days in Falmouth and (somehow) convinces Sherlock to join him. During the impromptu minibreak, the nature of John and Sherlock’s relationship begins to shift. Things get even better upon their return home to London. But are the two men on the same page about what they’ve become?

What Happens to the Heart by Susan (31K, M, Johnlock) Someone wants John Watson dead and is willing to pay a lot of money to make it happen. Hitmen, old grudges, new grudges and lots of kissing.

Cupid's Venom by SilentAuror (29K, E, Johnlock) Over drinks one night, Mike Stamford reveals to Sherlock that he always wished he could have taken credit for being Sherlock and John's Cupid. Unfamiliar with the reference, Sherlock plunges into studies of toxins and Greek mythology...

The Best Seats in The House by J_Baillier (22K, T, Johnlock) Nature photographer John Watson is trying to do the same as the locals: getting the hell of the way when the killer queen of Indonesian's volcanoes starts a drumbeat towards eruption. Little does he know that soon, he'll be headed straight into the danger zone.

Both Sides Now by Silvergirl (14K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock, undercover on the Norfolk coast, texts that he needs help; John is still seething after Sherlock’s gambit in the train car, and he refuses. When Sherlock goes missing, Mycroft sends John in to pose as Sherlock’s bit on the side.

Plus these bonus fics from 2021 that I read after posting my 2021 list and deserve a spot:

Know You All Over Again by PoppyAlexander (53K, M, Johnlock) After five good years, one difficult one, and six months that were hell, John and Sherlock live apart but still share custody of seven-year-old Rosie. With therapy, supportive friends, and those inevitable dance recitals and open school days forcing them into each other's paths again and again, anger and bitterness fade, leaving space for a new view of each other across the divide.

The Oak Tree and the Cypress by FinAmour (43K, E, Johnlock) Things Sherlock didn't expect to happen at midnight on a Thursday: for John to be kissing him. For John's lips to be so delicious. For his own mouth, stung by the sweetness, to kiss John back—or for his hands to raise to John's cheeks in order to lengthen it. He didn't expect his heart to be bursting with pure joy and relief, or for their night to end with John in a hospital bed. And he certainly did not expect to turn them into fake husbands.

Previous favorites lists: 2010 / 2011 / 2012 / 2013 / 2014 / 2015 / 2016 / 2017 / 2018 / 2019 / 2020 / 2021

Most kudoed Sherlock fics from 2022

The 10 most popular fics* on AO3 completed in 2022 with Sherlock (TV) as the main fandom. Kudo counts as of 1 Jan 2023.

1. 3497 kudos - Teaching Sherlock by Sherlock1110 (148K, E, Johnlock, Mystrade) Sherlock is 24, his older brother Mycroft has had enough. John Watson is known for training subs, looking after them until they're ready to leave and never getting emotionally attached. At least that was what he thought until he met Sherlock Holmes, the troublesome submissive who no one could tame.

2. 1718 kudos - Helpless Here Below by Mottlemoth (66K, E, Mystrade, Johnlock, Warstan) Mycroft Holmes and Greg Lestrade barely know each other - so John Watson has always believed. When he witnesses a surprising moment of care between them, John starts to wonder if there's more going on than meets the eye

3. 1378 kudos - Indefinite Lines by ArwaMachine (298K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock and John find themselves faced with a series of seemingly disparate cases that are growing increasingly connected, increasingly personal. They must unravel the mystery laid before them by a particularly ruthless set of criminals before the danger is upon them, or else run the risk of being cleaved apart forever, lines scattered to the wind.

4. 1237 kudos - Shift by stopthat (46K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock is tired. John senses a shift.

5.  1219 kudos - Plenipotentials by Ginevra_Benci (54K, M, Mystrade, Johnlock) The first thing your soulmate says in your presence writes itself on your skin as they say it, usually on your chest, arm, or hand, or—if you’re very unlucky—on your face.  Greg was very, very unlucky.

6. 1091 kudos - The Impenetrable Mind Palace of Muggle Sherlock Holmes by suitesamba (27K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock is obsessed with the new neighbor - the one who's rented Mrs. Hudson's flat while she spends a year abroad. There's something odd about the amiable man, but Sherlock just can't put his finger on it. And when has Sherlock Holmes ever failed at deducing someone?

7. 992 kudos - Matchmaking for Solitary Animals by ArwaMachine (71K, E, Johnlock, Sherlock/OMC, John/OMC) Upon moving back to Baker Street following Sherlock’s return from the dead, John finds that Sherlock is a bit more keen on entertaining gentlemen callers than he once was, a fact that seems to make John irrationally angry. Intent on proving that he’s not a total dick, John decides to make it his mission to find Sherlock a boyfriend. This, as it turns out, is the worst idea John has ever had.

8.  812 kudos - What Have You Done? by DownpourOfFeels (62K, E, Johnlock, Warstan) John Watson’s wedding was over a year ago now and his friendship with Sherlock Holmes is deteriorating. With a new daughter in the picture, bills to pay and a job to hold down, there’s no time for solving cases - and he’s not as happy as he thought he might be. On the other side of London, Sherlock has never felt more alone. Crushed with regret and running out of distractions, he sneaks off one night to get high - but as he trips, Moriarty escapes from his mind and comes out to play. Will John and Mycroft get there in time to save him?

9. 802 kudos - When It Rains by BlueMoon0nTheRise (98K, M, Mystrade) Ever since Greg Lestrade saved Sherlock's life, Mycroft Holmes' protective streak started to extend to him, too. Whenever Greg is injured or ill, the older Holmes is always there in the background, ensuring that he recovers. And over time, Greg starts to return the favour, when he can.

10. 774 kudos - A Question of Honour by MizJoely (47K, E, Sherlolly) Revolutionary War AU. Colonial spy Molly Hooper is caught sneaking into the quarters of British Army Captain Sherlock Holmes and is saved from hanging only by his assertion that she's actually his mistress. However, once she and the handsome enemy captain are forced to spend time alone in his quarters, will the lie become the truth?

It’s going to be the last Tour de France for professional cyclist John Watson.

======

Rec: If you haven’t read this yet, it is now complete and poised to be your big summer blockbuster. A grand adventure set to the gorgeous backdrop of the French landscape, it’s everything the summary promises and more.

I always get an extra kick out of reading a story where it’s clear the author has particularly extensive knowledge and passion for their subject, and here it’s cycling. From technical details and famous names to the ins and outs of the politics of the sport and physical and mental challenges, it is a truly immersive experience that lets you feel every sore muscle, every gasp for breath, and every hard-earned victory.

At the same time, I feel it’s important to mention that this isn’t a pure sports AU, as Sherlock is still a consulting detective. Why he’s riding the Tour de France is a plot point I’ll leave for you to find out, but there is an actual case to be solved that may possibly involve Sherlock and John jammed together in a closet to avoid being caught in the wrong hotel room, and you can imagine the possibilities. ;)

Because if you aren’t here for the cycling (and even if you are), then you will definitely want to stay for the relationship. It’s sweet, delicate, and oh-so-frustrating as both men have past emotional trauma to overcome, with much delightful pining and jealousy until they both get on the same page. And after that, it’s not just lots of mindless bonking, but a deepening emotional connection with very thoughtful and caring intimate moments that explore the boundaries of Sherlock’s demisexuality and John’s newly acknowledged bisexuality.

Another aspect that I particularly liked was the how many of the secondary characters were spotlighted with some cool side plots (see character list). On that note, I was very nervous about how far Moriarty’s role would be taken and whether there would be a Reichenbach situation, so I hope it’s not a spoiler to say there will be no fake deaths, and Moriarty is “just” a cycling rival, albeit a nasty piece of work.

There is so much more I could say, but this is already long and I think you get the point: one of the absolute best and well worth the investment in the nearly 300K.

My Favorite Fics of 2021

Wow, it seems so much longer than a year ago that I read some of these fics! 2021 was like a time warp. I have a bunch more saved that I still want to read, but things being the way they are, I thought it better to go ahead a post my favorites from the ones I finished while it’s still January.

In descending order of length, my 30 favorite fics that were completed in 2021:

Love Me, Love Me Knot (English Version) by kirin_calls, XBelladonnaX (213K, E, Johnlock, John/OC) In an alternate universe, the Omega Sherlock and the Alpha John meet by chance and enter into a pact which leads to far-reaching consequences. What is meant to be a simple solution to their problems turns out to be a challenge that pushes both men to their limits.

To Stand Before the Storm by ArwaMachine (132K, E, Johnlock) Somebody has been killing sheep on an uninhabited island just off the western coast of Ireland, and Sherlock—of course—can’t resist the call to investigate. As a soon-to-be-divorced John and a recently-not-dead Sherlock unravel the mystery of the murdered sheep, they find that they may be forced to confront unspoken sentiments that have lingered between the two them for some time—that is, if they don’t fall victim to the dangers of the island first.

The Ancillus's Tale by Chryse (128K, E, Johnlock) Once Sherlock’s body had been his alone. He was free to treat it with great care or none at all; to live on cigarettes and coffee and cocaine and then sleep it all off for days on end. He was free to stay in and sleep alone or to go to clubs and choose someone to touch him, mark him with nails and teeth or to kiss him with sweetness and care, according to his whim. Every part of it had been his decision. No more. Now he was property of the Crown, tagged and marked like one of the King’s deer, to be bred like one of his horses.

First, Do No Harm by J_Baillier (114K, M, Johnlock) When Sherlock's career and sanity are compromised by a case that ends up on the nation's front pages, he and John struggle to find a way forward. How can a surgeon reconcile being protected for a mistake they made but put on trial for one they didn't?

No Clean Slate by BeautifulFiction (112K, E, Johnlock) Not even Mary's death is enough to wipe her slate clean. Especially when she never died at all. John Watson must face up to his wife's past and keep his daughter safe. He doesn't ask for help, not from anyone. Except Sherlock Holmes.

From a Drop of Water by victorianpining (95K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock is certain that James Moriarty is dead and he already has a theory for the person behind his apparent return. Considering Sherlock was overdosing at the time, it's only to be expected that he overlooked a few details in coming to his conclusions. John meanwhile has moved back in with Mary after reconciling with her at Christmas, but finds himself agonising over why Sherlock would have thrown away everything he cares about to keep her safe. Could Sherlock be in love?

Swallow the Night by ArwaMachine (87K, E, Johnlock) John’s stag-do doesn’t go as planned. Or--depending on how you look at it--it went exactly as planned. Life goes on, of course, but can it?

Bakers with Benefits by Raina_at (83K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes has a successful YouTube baking channel, but what he really wants is his own bakery. When an old friend sends him a call for the very first Great British Bake Off, he seizes the opportunity to finally win a sponsor for his bakery. Here's the plan: Win Bake Off, get the bakery, don't fall in love with the handsome Army doctor at the neighbouring station. Easy.

So Grant Us All a Change of Heart by ArwaMachine (83K, E, Johnlock, Mystrade) It’s Christmastime at Baker Street, but things are far from festive. Mary is dead, John and Sherlock’s friendship is all but ruined, and Sherlock has become a right dick about everything. More convinced than ever that sentiment is objectively useless, Sherlock needs a little paranormal intervention to see the error of his ways or else run the risk of losing all that is important to him.

In Sickness And In Health by J_Baillier (75K, E, Johnlock) When John gets a long overdue tonsillectomy, Sherlock is robbed of a chance to meet lots of handsome officers in uniform.

Messages From Deep Waters by J_Baillier (56K, E, Johnlock, Viclock, Warstan) They say that people who settle in such isolated, wild places cradled and battered by the sea are exceptionally at peace with themselves or running away from something. Sherlock certainly knows which one applies to him, but what about his reclusive neighbour John Watson?

Together We Fell by Enterthetadpole, WritingOutLoud (55K, E, Johnlock, Mollstrade) Fuelled with post-case adrenaline, Sherlock takes a risk and shows John Watson what he really wants. The pair fall into a whirlwind romance, filled with laughter, cases and lovemaking, but without a solid foundation to build on. Six months later, John is left in the ruins, wondering where everything went wrong.

The Short Tragic Death of John Watson by Calais_Reno (49K, M, Johnlock) Thirteen years ago, Sherlock starred in a television series about an alien boy stranded on Earth. Now Molly has written a reunion episode and he's expected to join his old costars and recreate the role of Alex Tribble, now an adult returning to rescue his old friends from an alien threat. Having had some success since playing a teenage alien, Sherlock is reluctant to reprise the role. And there's another problem no one wants to discuss: John Watson, who played his best friend, is dead.

Rewind by khorazir (47K, M, Johnlock) An accidental touch sends Sherlock back to Barts morgue on 29th January 2010, thus undoing eight years of acquaintance with John Watson. Is this a most unfortunate incident, a curse, even? Or is it indeed a second chance to finally shape his relationship with John the way it should have been from the beginning?

Here We Go Again by disfictional (46K, E, Johnlock) Ransacking some old trunks, Rosie Watson finds her father's old journal filled with remnants of a blog he used to keep about his association with Sherlock Holmes. In an attempt to meet the man who had a profound impact on her early years, Rosie invites the long-estranged detective to her wedding under false pretenses. It's a Mamma Mia Fusion!

Ride On by Silvergirl (34K, E, Johnlock) After the disastrous reveal at the Landmark, John tells Sherlock there can be no excuse for what he’s done, and no forgiveness. Sherlock leaves London and starts a new life, and not even the British Government knows where. It’s up to John to track him down and make things right, with a trip around the world and a clue only John would recognize.

If There Were Any Time for a Miracle by Berty (31K, E, Johnlock) John and Sherlock are spending Christmas at the Holmes' family home. Sherlock has a plan that John doesn't know about. John has a wish that Sherlock doesn't know about. If there were any time for a miracle, this would be it.

Sleepwalkers by ArwaMachine (27K, E, Johnlock) Five times Sherlock and John share a bed after a near-death experience, and one time they share a bed for…other reasons.

What Makes Us Real by lurikko/toyhto (26K, E, Johnlock, Sherlock/OMC) Sherlock is a sex robot who doesn’t like sex. John’s job is to find out why.

Human Behaviour by lurikko/toyhto (21K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock wakes up after a nap and finds out that sixty-five years have passed. Also, there's a human living in his apartment.

Treading Water by DiscordantWords (21K, T, Johnlock) As their personal and professional relationship slowly unravels under an intangible strain, a case forces Sherlock and John to spend the night inside the London Aquarium.

Fading Stars and Black Holes by lurikko/toyhto (19K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes, known from movies A Scandal in Belgravia and Don’t Make Me Choose, comes back to acting after two years. He’s starring in a romantic comedy about two men who move in together for practical reasons and stumble into a surprising friendship. The only problem is that his co-star is John Watson, a man whom he hasn’t seen since he left their shared flat two years ago, leaving John only a note. During the time they have been apart, John Watson has gotten to himself a wife, a child, and a divorce.

Hot Water Bottle by khorazir (18K, T, Johnlock) A case in one of the remotest corners of the Lake District, a storm, an inn, a broken boiler, a room with two beds but only one hot water bottle, and two men who have a lot to sort out between them – all of this makes for a night to remember.

House of Light by AlgySwinburne (17K, E, Johnlock) “For god’s sake,” Sherlock blusters, “John and I are--” “Happy. So very happy,” John cuts in loudly. He gives Sherlock a resounding slap on the back, jerking Sherlock forward. “In fact, we couldn’t be happier, did I already say that? The two of us. Sherlock and I, that is. Because we’re together--in a relationship--as you so astutely noticed before we could break the news. So. Yes. Thank you, Mrs Holmes.”

I Can Carry You by lurikko/toyhto (17K, E, Johnlock) There's a new virus. Sherlock catches it.

Winning the Goat by ArwaMachine (17K, E, Johnlock) The life that Sherlock and John have together is rather unusual. Sometimes they lounge about the flat with their daughter. Sometimes they flee for their lives from a band of organ-harvesting criminals. Sometimes they shag. Sometimes Sherlock insists upon arguing with John about the Monty Hall problem for weeks on end. Somehow, they love each other. Somehow, it all works.

Another Party on Christmas Eve by PoppyAlexander (14K, M, Johnlock) A year after their first meeting during the festive season, Sherlock and John plan for another of Sherlock's holiday drinks things.

For Love by lurikko/toyhto (13K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock asks John to marry him. It's for a case. Probably.

The Zebra Sheets by agirlsname (13K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock is back from the dead and he's exhausted. So is John. They go on a holiday to a faraway cottage and unexpected truths are revealed.

holding steady by darcylindbergh (12K, E, Johnlock) Sitting on a thick wool blanket at the end of a rickety dock side-by-side, legs dangling over the edge, a styrofoam container of wet, dark dirt between them, they’re fishing. * John knows what this is about. This is about finally figuring it out.

Rec: A magnificent climax to a landmark series. Although you know from the summary what is coming, the author plays with cards close to their chest, creating a crescendo of tension and anticipation until the seminal event which finally brings all of the blocks crashing down.

Amidst this perfect storm of personal and professional tragedies converging, an existential crisis emerges from an unexpected quarter that threatens to put an end to Sherlock’s career and the life he has fought so hard for. Luckily, Sherlock has unwittingly assembled just the team he needs over the course of the entire series, and it was wonderful to see just how far he has come and how everyone was able to play the part they were destined for.

This particular installment focuses less than previous stories on the more generally visible aspects of trauma, treatment, and recovery, and more on the providers’ internal perspective and the behind-the-scenes functioning - or failing - of the healthcare system. It was a real eye-opener, and one of the biggest things that I’ve enjoyed and admired about this entire series is how much I’m able to experience the story from the characters’ perspectives. Not just understanding what they are feeling and why, but actually feeling those things. It’s truly like being inside someone else’s mind, which I think is a pretty magical thing for a story to be able to do. As such, it was truly a fitting finale, leaving me with a sense of closure, peace, and satisfaction on all fronts.

Rec: If you haven’t read this yet, here is your big summer blockbuster. With panoramic, windswept vistas, a compelling case, strong original characters, high-impact emotions, and a buttload of unprocessed trauma, this story will hold you on the edge of your seat for every gut-punching, breathtaking, heartrending, if-we-were-boyfriends moment.

Set after series 3 but ignores series 4, Mary is not an assassin, and there was no baby. But John’s not over Reichenbach, Sherlock’s not over Serbia, and even without the mind-controlling secret sister, there’s just something about the allure of the inherent danger of a remote island cut off from the outside world that neither man can resist.

I really loved the way this was written from John’s point of view, with humor, resignation, and self-effacement, but also with moments of absolute poetry and stunning phrases and imagery that just made me stop and admire the craft of it all.

Rec: Amazing adaptation with the Sherlock characters in this chilling and all too plausible dystopian setting. The author delivers a top-notch, high stakes story of political maneuvering, power struggles, and personal vendettas, brought into keen focus through Sherlock’s position at the centre of it all. His ingenuity, resourcefulness, and cunning are put to the ultimate test when he is left utterly alone in a seemingly inescapable nightmare, his usual allies (Mycroft, John, and even the “irregulars”) nowhere to be found - at least for the time being - and others such as Molly and Mrs Hudson with indeterminate loyalties. Gripping from start to finish, with the kind of attention to detail that bespeaks extensive planning and promises big payoffs in ah-ha moments and juicy reveals, not to mention the Big Emotions when fate - or someone with a more vested interest - intervenes to put Sherlock and John in each other’s orbit.

On top of all of that, of course, this is omegaverse, and I’m just going to borrow a quote from myself that I posted recently because it’s so applicable:

“Omegaverse is a very rich breeding ground for social justice, gender politics, and the biology and psychology of emotion. It can be incredibly moving and empowering. And it can also get down and dirty and just be an outlet for the kinds of things you don’t like to admit in polite company.”

And boy howdy, does this get down and dirty, in every way you can imagine.

Additional heads-up in that regard for untagged Sherlock/OC’s (multi).

Rec: The author once more does their name justice with a beautifully rendered story brimming with emotion, action, shocks, suspense, and two men who can no longer escape their necessity to each other.

Starting immediately after Mary is shot in T6T, this ignores the rest of series 4 in favor of exploring the possibility of Mary faking her death and what might drive her to such an extreme measure. The sweeping, international scheme is gripping and believably menacing, with crosses and double-crosses that prove a match even for the British Government Himself.

As the noose tightens, Sherlock and John are put through a series of increasingly life-threatening scenarios that force them into ever closer proximity - both physical and emotional - and give them a chance to rediscover what they had lost.

Beyond that, it’s got all the goodies: Mycroft doing legwork, a safe house, codebreaking, a shadowy supragovernmental conspiracy, military maneuvers, and of course bedsharing, John going hard into overprotective mode, nesting, and, in the end, only one bedroom necessary.

Rec: A sweeping, complex epic covering several years, this fic truly has it all: breakups and makeups, cases and cuddles, comprehensive world-building and character journeys, and of course what omegaverse fic would be complete without plenty of hot and sexy loving?

The time line flips back and forth between John and Sherlock’s first meeting and several years later after their estrangement, when circumstances bring them back together. The consequences of the experiences they have had in the intervening years are brought to bear in life-altering ways, forcing them to rediscover each other and themselves at the same time as they are trying to stop and catch a serial killer. It’s not comfortable or easy, so get ready for a boatload of angst and pain along the way. Mistakes are made and lessons learned, but in the end the refiner’s fire is worth the gold.

======

Rec: This fic is at the top of its game with a deft ear for dialogue, gobs of pining, and lusciously indulgent smut, all while cleverly weaving in and out of the episodes as we know them. The story more or less follows canon up to Mary’s good-bye letter in The Six Thatchers - more or less because there is a whole juicy underplot going on which begins on John’s stag night and colors every interaction with a double layer of meaning from then on. I was absolutely hooked on every scene, suffering and taking what moments of joy I could right along with John and Sherlock as they tried to figure out how to fix a seemingly unfixable situation.

When the turning-off point comes, the story became for me something reminiscent of the heyday of post-Reichenbach fic, with John and Sherlock heading off together on a global chase filled with excitement, drama, and some very timely realizations.

In other words, I would rank this fic right up there with some of the best-known classics in terms of delivering on promises, quality of writing, emotional impact, and making good on what canon lacks.
