There are 881 days until Rio 2016. The following is a brief sampling of the news and events that occurred today.

Tony Hawk believes skateboarding will be added to Olympics | OlympicTalk
Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk won’t be around to compete, but he’s been involved in discussions and seems confident skateboarding will become an Olympic sport. “I don’t know if it’s too definite or not, but I have heard it’s very likely going to be in the 2020 Games,”Hawk told Larry King in an interview aired last week. The problem with that is the International Olympic Committee set its sport program for the 2020 Olympics last year, keeping wrestling over adding baseball/softball or squash. But the opportunity moving forward remains.
The opening ceremony of the 2014 Sochi Winter Paralympics will go ahead amid optimism about the increased profile it will bring its athletes but uncertainty over the effects of the crisis in Ukraine. Sir Philip Craven, the Bolton-born International Paralympic Committee president, said events in the nearby Crimea would not have an impact on the Games: "We have the absolute assurances from the Russian government and from the organising committee with regard to security, security which was excellent during the Olympics." The IPC has praised the facilities laid on for the 547 athletes from 45 countries who will compete and says it is business as usual. "We're here for the sport and we'll let the politicians deal with the politics," said a spokesman.

Ex-IOC chief Jacques Rogge receives honorary knighthood - ESPN
LONDON -- Former Olympics chief Jacques Rogge of Belgium received an honorary knighthood from Britain on Tuesday. Princess Anne, Britain's member of the International Olympic Committee, presented the award to Rogge at Buckingham Palace. Rogge, the IOC president from 2001 to 2013, was honored for his service to the Olympics.
Closing ceremony: as it happened The ruling paves the way for Campbell-Brown to make her international return for Jamaica in the 60 metres, where she will have to the chance to take her third successive world title after victories in Doha in 2010 and Istanbul in 2012. In a statement released by her management company, the sprinter said: "The final court available to us as athletes have spoken and humbly I say they have confirmed my innocence."
Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown cleared to return to track - ESPN
KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Decorated Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown says she has been cleared to return to the track by the world sports court some 10 months after returning a positive test at an island meet. The Court of Arbitration for Sport has "confirmed my innocence" and she intends to focus on advancing her career, including regaining her world 200-meter title next year, Campbell-Brown said in a Monday statement. The three-time Olympic gold medalist said the last several months have brought much "pain and suffering," including "insensitive and ill-informed media remarks," but her religious faith, family, friends and fans helped her cope.
These were the Games for the athletes. The clean athletes. Thanks to the most stringent anti-doping programme in Olympic Winter Games history, never has it been so difficult for cheats to prosper. In total, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) oversaw 2,667 tests during the course of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, surpassing the previous record set at Vancouver 2010 by 518 tests. Of the 2,667 tests, 477 were blood tests and 2,190 were urine tests.

The Olympic Reader - February 23, 2014

It is Day 16 of Sochi 2014. Here are some of today's stories from the world's leading Olympic media outlets.

The drug Vitalijs Pavlovs was found positive for, methylhexaneamine, has many variants and names.  It was used as early as 1944 as a nasal decongestant but was voluntarily withdrawn by the company that invented it, Eli Lilly and Company, in 1983. When it was discovered to have fat-burning potential, it became added to many energy-boosting dietary supplements. It’s current life as a dietary supplement began in 2006. Though it is sold online and in stores, there have been at least five deaths tenuously associated with supplements that contain methylhexaneamine. It is chemically related to amphetamines, but its effects are nowhere near as strong. They are not long-lasting and are comparable to a cup or two of coffee. Unfortunately for athletes such as Vitalijs Pavlovs who are tested for illegal substances, the companies that sell methylhexaneamine as a supplement might, for a variety of reasons, leave it or other ingredients off the ingredient list. Alternatively, stimulants can be added to a supplement through cross-contamination occurring during the manufacturing process. Supplements known to contain methylhexaneamine include USPLabs’ Jack3d and OxyELITE pro, Nutrex Hemo Rage Black Ultra Concentrate, and LG Science’s Rezolution. Retrospective analysis of Latvia’s stunning quarterfinals performance may be negatively affected by the IOC’s subsequent disqualification of the team’s 24-year-old forward Vitalijs Pavlovs due to his testing positive for methylhexaneamine.

It is Day 15 of Sochi 2014. The following is a brief sampling of the Winter Games news and events that occurred today.

(AP Photo/Bernat Armangue) SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Four-time Olympic medalist Evgeni Plushenko will have back surgery on March 2.
SOCHI, RUSSIA—The Ukrainian Olympic Committee says cross-country skier Marina Lisogor has failed a doping test, the third positive result of the Sochi Games. Lisogor tested positive for trimetazidine, which is classified as a “specified stimulant” on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list. Specified substances are considered more susceptible to inadvertent use and can carry reduced penalties.
In this combination of photos taken on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi, Russia, a group of Communist party officials attempts to display the Soviet Banner of Victory during a flower ceremony for a short track speedskating competition during the 2014 Winter Olympics. In the series, sequenced left to right starting at the top row, Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov, center, and Communist lawmakers Yuri Afonin, center left, and Nikolai Kharitonov, center right, along with party spokesman Alexander Yushchenko, right, and an unidentified man at left argue with the protocol manager at the venue and grasp her arms as she tries to stop them from displaying the banner. She relents when Mikhail Kusnirovich, founder and chairman of Russian apparel giant Bosco Di Ciliegi, gets involved in the discussion. The banner is a replica of the flag raised by Soviet soldiers in Berlin in 1945, in victory over Nazi Germany.
