Chapter 21: Rhaenyra XI

They cried, they laughed, some in the crowds fainted. Guards had to push the common people back for they wanted to get closer, yet they fought. One man managed to slip past the shields and lances, only the vicious cry from Syrax stopped him, causing him to stumble backwards in fear.

Syrax’s tail lashed like a whip and again the she-dragon shrieked. Her anger seemed to have roused Caraxes, smoke escaping his nostrils, more black than the dark waters of the Rhoyne by night. His eyes were slits, and like a snake he lowered his great red head.

With a jump, Daemon dismounted the Blood Wyrm. He pushed his head away and walked to her own dragon Syrax.

Daemon studied the three men, the oldest could not be older than Rhaenrya was herself. They bowed before her as Haryllo spoke.

-Princess, allow me to introduce you to the sons of Lysandro Rogare. - a cough from one of the men made the magister to quickly correct himself. - Ah yes apologies, Lysandro Rogare the Magnificent.

Daemon laughed and Rhaenyra raised an eyebrow.

-Lysandro the what?

-Magnificent, my fair dragon princess. He is owner of Rogare Bank in Lys. Word is it they have grown to be richer than the Iron Bank of Braavos. I have recently had some deals made with our Lysandro.

Rhaenyra was thoroughly unimpressed.

-You must remember our father. - one of the three men said as he approached her. - I have the honour of being Lysandro the Magnificent’s second born child, named Fredo Rogare. These are my brothers, Drako and Moredo Rogare.

Daemon seemed more amused by the minute.

Daemon was surprised by the admission. It was not hard to guess, but he never expected that the Sea Snake would say it aloud.

-I always thought I would have a boy to be the very image of me. Adventurous, ambitious…

“With a taste for women.” The prince added in his mind.

-Laenor was…- Corlys seemed to try and find the right words. - He wasn’t like that. He wasn’t anything as I was. In truth, my son had much of Rhaenys’s father, and for mine own misfortune, of all that was bad about Prince Aemon.

The Rogue Prince and the White Knight

-Pray tell, steward’s son, what are you doing here at my brother’s tourney? - Prince Daemon asked when their faces were but inches apart.

Ser Criston lifted his chin and looked at the prince in the eye, fighting against the discomfort he felt about them.

-I am here to fight.

The prince did not seem the least bit impressed.

-A steward’s son who wants to be a knight… You’re in luck, Cole. I am told we are matched with each other at the melee, and that you also put your name down for the lists… though I wouldn’t be so bold as to assume you will still be able to compete at the jousting if I were you.

Prince Daemon looked back, and all of his cronies laughed with him, each trying to laugh louder than the last.

-In any case, if it is fighting you want, you shall have it. Just don’t cry about it afterwards… or do.

-Why would I? - he asked defiantly making the prince narrow his eyes.

They were but two pale lilac slits on his face.

-You got a mouth on you, a rare thing in a servant. They usually know their place, especially around a prince and most of all, the king’s own heir.

Prince Daemon turned on his heels and swaggered back to his seat. Somehow, Criston felt more relieved with each step the prince took away from him.

“His mother was his father’s sister.” He thought with disgust.

-You got a mouth on you, - the prince said. - But it’s not a very amusing one, Cole. Get out.

Criston did not wait for his leave to exit the tent. Somehow though, his encounter with the prince had made him less fearful of their match. In his mind, he had expected a great warrior. The reality of it though, was a tall man with strange eyes and as much wine in his veins as blood. He was very much a prince though, very much indeed.
