There is beauty in Cold Steel.

I feel like I want to explain to young tumblr users who weren't born yet that MulderxScully was a revolutionary ship. No, it was not queer but that is not the only way to be revolutionary.

In the 90s when The X Files was airing, media was like misogyny soup. Yes, there were exceptions. But casual sexism was so ubiquitous it was like we were all frogs simmering in it and if you dared to say, hey, uh, isn't this joke a little shitty to the wife? Or maybe this female character could do something other than pose and ask questions so the male lead can answer them? Then you were a hairy feminist outcast loser.

Scully was a lot of things but she was not that. All the "You're not going to believe this, Scully!" memes are based on the fact that Mulder, an attractive white dude, wanted nothing more in his entire life than to share his passions with this tiny redhead. Was he nuts? Yes. But on many other shows, he would have talked down to her, would've ignored her, would've mocked her. He didn't.

When you go back and watch The X Files, there's these moments where Mulder and Scully look at each other like, "wait did Jack Black really just say that" and the significance to fan history isn't just the sexual tension. It's that, yeah, and the origin of the word ship, and the 'will-they-won't-they'. But the most important thing about those looks is how they told the audience that Mulder was looking to Scully for something. A man was looking at a woman and asking with his eyes "what do you think about this?" Was he also saying "and do you want to bone about it?" Yeah, yeah he was. But the first thing was sexy as hell.

Respecting a woman's expertise and folding information she provided into his worldview was a revolutionary thing for a man to do on television at the time. Thank you for coming to my MSR ted talk.

I happened to be writing for a TV magazine back in the early 90s, and remember getting the very first tape (VHS! hah!) of The X-Files to review. I watched it about five times, and of all things that hit me and I couldn't stop squawking about in the article that resulted was the complete upending of the usual dynamic between male and female characters. It wasn't just the respect for Scully that Mulder displayed (even in that first episode where he was deeply suspicious and wary of a new partner being forced on him, and before he had the opportunity to fully appreciate her expertise) but it was the inversion of trope of the unreliable, flighty female and the rock solid, dependable man. A tv show that actually allowed the main lead to have EMOTIONS! That allowed the female lead to be analytical, and head-first, and possibly even smarter than him!

You are a very lucky person if you don't realise just how revolutionary this was.

(And I was a women's studies major at the time, so was pretty steeped in a wide range of media, and still I tell you - REVOLUTIONARY.)

I read somewhere that David Duchovny decided to play Mulder as though Scully’s opinion was the one that mattered most to him in the room. and i think that shows

I never really got into The X-Files (Conspiracy Theory plots never interested me), but the dynamic between them struck me as unique even watching a scene or two as I was flipping between channels while the commercials were airing on another show.

Like Mulder's "I want to believe" poster ... It's usually (and back then, by 'usually' I mean 'always') the woman who was the daydream believer.

Also, the fact that Mulder called her "Scully." Back then, the men were addressed by their surnames, and women were always addressed by their first names.

It’s cuter when you recognize that the lion with visible spots is a juvenile. There’s a very high chance the other lion that runs over to investigate is the MOTHER.

The first lion is asking for comfort because she was given a big spook!!! and she needs mommy to tell her it’s safe and ok!!!! (What’s cuter is that mommy clearly reassures her, and goes on to take the parent role of ‘deal with the scream rat in order to protect my large and easily frightened daughter’)

actually you’re completely right that the original lion is a juvenile, but it’s a male! his size and the fact that he still has some baby spots left also indicate that he’s a very YOUNG juvenile, equivalent to a human preteen!

so really what’s happening here is a fantastic mother dashing outside with a broom to defend her 13-year-old son from the angry opossum that he just found in the trash can while taking out the garbage.

And quite clearly neither know what to do, really.

“i used to live there” is such a sad phrase. seeing places u used to live in is an odd thing. It’s like ‘i know where the best hiding place is in there. my bedroom was the one directly to the left as you walk in. i took my first steps on that flooring. i used to play in that yard with my grandma. she died two years ago. that was the only place i ever knew. those walls contain all of my childhood memories. i can no longer go there, but i know every corner like the back of my hand.’

What source of passive income allows him to just print money like this?

An ‘unlimited’ annual pass with free parking is $1600/year (up from $1400 when he completed his record 2012-2020). And yeah, that’s over $116 a month and not how I’d spend my money but it’s not obscene.

Plus, he’s an older dude with free time every day. DL is a safe venue to walk around and kill time if all you have is time to kill, and from the article it seems he’s built quite the social network of Disney regulars & cast members. So good for him.

The Disney corporation hates people like him, btw. 

Disney considers AP holders parasites, clogging the parks, taking up space that could be better utilized by Big Spending out-of-town visitors. Which is why the price for an AP has gone up so dramatically ALONG WITH a zillion new restrictions like blackout days + reservation requirements.

Up until 2013 or so it was common for local families to buy their kids Annual Passes then drop them off at the park every day during summer as cheap childcare. Seriously, $100/month is a bargain.

thats just the admission and parking though, the park tends to be pretty strict on how much food and drink you can bring in and none of the options inside are cheap, even with the like 10% discount before tax and tips the annual pass holder gets.

You’re absolutely right! 

But AP holders usually don’t buy food & drink inside the parks... unless you’re DisneyFoodBlog or Jenny Nicholson. Another reason Disney hates on passholders.

Most AP holders hit one of the kazillion affordable restaurants outside the park on their way in or out, then carry a water bottle once inside to stay hydrated. And most visits aren’t the all-day-long thing out of towners do; AP folk will kill an hour or two, ride Indiana Jones or the Matterhorn then leave.

The guy in the article appears to have visited once a day just to walk a lap or two for exercise. He wasn’t staying all day, dealing with hotel room reservations, rental car, airline tickets, souvenirs, or any of the expenses a tourist would have.

The real insanity is how the US is so lacking in safe public third places that for some people, an annual pass to Disney is their best shot at having a walkable outdoor space and some semblance of community.

That's exactly what I used to do with my annual pass. Real Life Romance Option and I lived about 15 minutes from the Toy Story parking lot, so we'd sometimes just go for a dole whip, hang out, people watch, and leave. Sometimes we rode rides. Sometimes we just walked around and enjoyed the atmosphere, or looked at the decorations. I really miss doing it, but Disney has made it so fucking impossible to just go to the park.

And those sky high annual pass prices are recent. I started getting mine in 2015, when the big kahuna pass that had few to no blackout dates and included parking cost $800. It's more than doubled in price. It still wasn't cheap when this guy did all those visits, but it sure as shit wasn't $1600.

Don’t look at things you know will make you angry. Don’t read the comment sections. Don’t look at the blogs of people who add dumb comments to posts to confirm that they’re dumb all the time.
