Star Wars Director J.J. Abrams Talks About 'The Rise Of Skywalker' Meaning

There was a whole lot of buzz when Lucasfilm dropped the very first teaser for Star Wars: Episode IX during Star Wars Celebration last month. Not only did the teaser promise the return of fan-favorite Star Wars villain Darth Sidious, but it also revealed the official title for the movie: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

There were a whole lot of questions following the title’s reveal. Did The Rise of Skywalker mean a redemption arc for Kylo Ren (Adam Driver)? Did it mean that J.J. Abrams would retcon Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) origin in his upcoming film? Did it mean a new name for the Jedi?

According to Abrams, the title actually wasn’t meant to be all that misleading.

Speaking in an interview with Empire (via Express), The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams addresses his controversial title for Episode IX, talking about how he came up with the name for the third and final film in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars sequel trilogy.

“In coming up with the title we just looked at the film and asked ourselves, ‘What are we saying?’ It feels very much like the title of this film.”

Abrams doesn’t necessarily give the answer that we expect, though we’re hoping to learn more as The Rise of Skywalker approaches its release. Right now we’re waiting for the first full trailer for Episode IX, and while most are expecting the video to drop during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International, there are those betting on the Disney exhibition, D23.
