Can i just say ever since the episode of Juls and her Mom aired, I’ve been angry about their scene.  And now that Juliantina broke up, my heart is breaking for Juls.  I seriously want to cry for her.  Let me explain.  

Messages:  She’s obviously sensitive to certain messages given to her.   The biggest one is that she doesn’t fit. (which implies she’s not good enough)

We already know that Chino was a horrible dad.  He was rarely around. Flashbacks make it look like he doesn’t care about her at all.  Chino was aggressive with Lupe in speech and physically.  Yet her mother continues to choose him, putting herself and her daughter in danger.   Doesn’t really put Juliana’s well being first and that’s really sad. 

I think Juls struggles with ‘being good enough’ and her world.

1.  She realizes Valentina is ‘out of her league’ after discovering how rich Val is.  It’s evident when they meet again.   Val is excited to see her but Juls seems apathetic.  After Val complements her purse, I dont know if Juls even believes her.  (Luckily Val pursues her even when Juls seems uninterested).  And of course, Val wins her over.

2.  Val really lifts Juls up - encouraging her, telling her how amazing she is and how amazing she will be.  She values her… when Juls doesn’t want to burden Val with her problems.  Val shows up .. pie in hand to let her know that she is important to her.   (i love the writers of this show btw).   She totally believes in Juls and I dont think Juls got a lot of that growing up.   When Val continues to encourage her with fashion, Juls asks her mom what she thinks.  Her mom encourages her which is good, but Idk if she would have done it on her own.   It’s after this, that Juls tries the school. 

3. Their first fight hits on Juls insecurity that she doesn’t fit in with Val’s world.  In fact, she gets angry and doesn’t even finish trying to explain and walks away.  This of course spirals when Juls can’t get in touch with Val and she thinks Val doesn’t want anything to do with her.   (But Val does and she actually helps Juls - let her guard down and let people give her things -showing her much she means to her. )  It’s also hard for her to accept things bc like she told Val ‘no one has really given me anything before’  (my heart broke).

3.  I know Lucho is a jerk.  But Juls is having fun with Val until Lucho calls her ‘disgusting’ or squalid.  After that, Juls tells Val she doesnt feel good and wants to go home.  :(   These things really hurt her and make her feel like she doesn’t fit… like she doesnt measure up. 

 4.  Chivi doesn’t want Juls around Val.   And Juls spirals.  She just told Val that she was in love with her without even blinking and now, she’s questioning.  Luckily Val brings her back on track.  Val is so good for her and helping her overcome these things. 

5.  THIS ONE.  This one makes me so mad and it makes me want to cry at the same time.  Your own mom says you don’t fit.   She basically telling her .. you’ll always be ‘Chino’s daughter.. with nothing special about you. You dont fit in Valentina’s world.. she’s too pretty and likeable.”  LIKE WTF.     This and the fact that her mom wants to leave the city to be safe, I think is what gets Juls rattled to the point of not being certain it’s right to be with Val.   

6.  Eva.  Once again, you are not good enough.  You are low scum trying to take advantage of my family, you are looking for a handout (which Juls hates) by living in Chivi’s house and asks her if she plans on moving in the house with them.  This is everything Juls hates.   She really wants to separate herself from the world in which she came from – she definitely doesn’t want to bring Val down to the world in which she lives.   She’s ashamed of that world.

Because Val’s world is where Juls wants to be.. but she can’t fit there.    So, there’s all these crazy emotions that lead to the break up.   Their worlds dont match and it’s dangerous.  Plus Eva threatening her probably really has her freaked out since she almost lost her mom. 

So all this leads to this.  If she continues with Val, Val gets hurt and her mom gets hurt.  She really doesn’t think she has a choice.

But the crazy thing is that in Valentina’s mind.. there is not two worlds.  There is just one where Juls and her exist.  

However Val fails to see the real danger to Juls and her mom. She only wants love to prevail.  And Barb is more realistic.   They really are good for each other.  Once the danger is removed and Juls starts to see her true value.  She’ll create that beautiful world with Val. 

I love them . And i love the writers for making them so complex in subtle ways.
