TW: Implied Torture, Mention of Blood

Whumpee panted as they rushed to hide behind a boulder. When they didn’t hear any footsteps coming closer, they held their breath and lowered their bloodied and bruised wings. They peeked around the rock to see if Whumper was nearby. Thankfully, the coast was clear.
Exhaling, they dropped to the ground and pulled their knees up to their chest. A strangled sob fell from their lips as they dug their nails into their clothes. They buried their face into their folded arms, pulling their tattered wings closer to themself.
They should’ve never ran away from Caretaker. They should’ve never snapped at Caretaker and called him all of those things. They regret it. All of it. They wished it never happened.
Whumpee wouldn’t be running for their life right now if they had stayed. They wouldn’t be hurt right now if they had stayed. Their wings wouldn’t be so tender and they would be able to fly away from this madness.
Why couldn’t they be in Caretaker’s warm embrace? Why couldn’t they be at Caretaker’s house where they were guaranteed to be safe? Why did they allow themself to be in this situation?
Why did they accept Whumper’s “help” to fix their wings?
If they didn’t run away, their wings wouldn’t have been messed up in the first place. Now they were probably ruined.
But if they did go back, would Caretaker still accept them? Would Caretaker still love them? Would Caretaker even want to look at them after all the things they said about him? Would he even care?
Maybe it would be better if Whumpee didn’t go back. Maybe it would be better if they just suffer alone.
Forever.
