The last thing he remembers before someone knocked him down was the orderly’s smirking face, like an echo of memories he tried to cast out as figments of imagination, as not real. And yet falling to the ground, this smirk like cutting him open with waves of humiliation, Hannibal couldn’t even bring himself to feel ambushed. Lately he thought he had been seeing them at every corner, haunting ghosts of past, present future, pushing him into unfamiliar territory of paranoia.
