Batman has Nightwing and Robin — you have us.
It’s kind of a relief walking around here in costume! Considering the way people dress in New York, I don’t look any more or less unusual than anyone else!
bruce wayne answering “yes” completely honestly, non-jokingly, with a deadpan voice when the media ask him in jest if he’s batman is a mood
In Gotham Adventures #35, Bruce is made part of a jury for the court case of a man that was apprehended by Batman.
And he just fuckin. He Does That
What seems to keep his cover isn’t secrecy (though there’s plenty of it), but instead just how absolutely outrageous the idea is. Bruce Wayne?? Batman??? Puh-lease. I mean, have you seen the guy? Sure he’s a nice guy, but he’s far too busy having people run WE for him and going on pleasure cruises to be Batman. I mean, really.
(Good thing nobody notices the cool symbolic silhouette deal he’s got going on there.) It’s likely become something akin to the ‘Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer’ joke, (check out this post) and Bruce often just feeds it, making it even easier to get away with. It’s fucking hilarious.
truth is my weapon.
Detective Comics #698
Comics are always trying to find the balance betweeen not enough characters and too many and by trying I mean they’ve never found a balance
I just love the phrase ‘forever poisoned by chronic idealism’
(Nightwing (1996) 115)
they just. straight up showed batmans dick in a recent comic. uncensored
Journalism, Privilege and Superpowers
This “best reporter ever” storyline on Supergirl should have involved a woman as mentor. It should have been saved for when Cat Grant could appear on the show or it should have introduced Lois Lane and shown her the respect she deserves as opposed to just lifting from her and stealing from her without putting in the work for a woman who already HAS significant physical privilege which gives her an advantage over all other journalists the same way Clark Kent has an advantage. The reason Lois Lane (and by proxy Iris West) are so powerful as journalists is because they do NOT have physical privilege. They can’t use super hearing to cheat. If a car blows up when they are interviewing a source they DIE. They are actually risking their LIVES when they investigate. Lois is better than Superman WITHOUT physical privilege or superpowers. That’s actually the point and why she is the hero she is. Because she beats him without that cheat. That’s actually a huge piece of the myth. Superman himself doesn’t get to be the top reporter. You know why? Because it’s privilege and it’s not a good story that way.
If neither Cat Grant or Lois Lane could have featured in an episode called “Ace Reporter” (odd to waste that episode title on an episode that doesn’t introduce Lois TBH) as a mentor figure then it absolutely, categorically should have been James Olsen doing the investigating with Kara and helping to guide her. It should have been James chasing leads with her and not regulated to a side plot. Instead, he’s shoved off stage left for most of the investigation and the blond heroine who already had superpowers is all of a sudden a great reporter overnight after an entire season where this wasn’t earned or developed. James is given no real input and not a part of it.
James Olsen…who studied/worked under Perry White. James Olsen who spent most of his professional career partnered with Lois Lane. James Olsen who has a god damn Pulitzer Prize.
If Supergirl is going to be clearly derivative and simply lift and steal this journalism plotline from the Super myth (as opposed to taking the time to develop a profession for Kara that reflects HER history and HER myth) then so be it. But don’t think we don’t notice that they are being both derivative AND simultaneously disrespectful to the established journalist icons of the myth who laid the groundwork for anyone to even remotely care about this and who don’t have the privilege of superpowers. When Lois Lane or Iris West or James Olsen chase a story they are actually risking their LIVES in a way that mirrors the threats real journalists face and in a way Kara and Clark Kent are NOT. The Super myth GETS this. Clark Kent himself gets this which is why, if you ask him, he names Lois and Jimmy as his heroes. Clark Kent is not the top reporter AND Superman. He is partnered with a woman with no powers who is better at the game than even he is. If you don’t get why this is important then you don’t understand the function and role that physical privilege plays in this story. The top reporter in any Super story should not be someone with superpowers. It’s a cheat. So unless James Olsen starts playing a much bigger role in this journalism plot line as a partner, I am not interested in Kara Danvers as a reporter.
yeah… maybe
