Flag Burning and Black Radicalism at Valdosta State

Well we’ve all read about these controversies on college campuses regarding ultra-leftists or some other foolish group trying to make a scene, but we rarely get to live at the center of the issue. I have recently had the experiecne of living though one of these controversies when it found its way to my own University; Valdosta State.

It all began when Black Separatists held a demonstration trampling an American Flag and an Air Force Veteran Michelle Manhart attempted to retrieve the flag for proper disposal, prompting her detention by University Police for theft. The flag was not her property, and its desecration is actually legal as per the court decision of Johnson v. Texas.

Now I like most VSU students thought this would be the end of it. It was common belief that the demonstrators were fools, but they were fools with rights like any of us.....that was until the media picked up the story and it all spiraled out of control.

This lead to a pro-flag rally the following Monday which was actually three different groups. There was the original pro-flag group, a group with both flags and #blacklivesmatter signs, and the original group who came to desecrate not just flags, but a Quran, Bible and images of Jesus. In a moment that I actually found rather touching, the two former groups merged together into one large pro-America group with, divided in politics, but united in ideals.

Of course the group of Black Separatists was not involved in this. Instead they ended up in heated arguments with students regarding their hateful views and messages. I was there to view all of this first hand. While there were mostly respectful discussions involving the Blacklivesmatter folks and the Pro-Flag group, it wasn’t quite so nice involving the Separatist group.

It was certainly not a homogeneous group who was arguing with them; I saw white students, black students, Hispanics, and Asians all with a bone to pick with this hateful ideology. So in a way they did bring the school together against this radicalism.

This was however not just a group of ideological idiots though, it was a group that advocated revolutionary violence against Whites and Blacks who accepted “the white man’s ways”. This became apparent with their words on social media (below) and when a loaded pistol traced to Eric Sheppard (the apparent ringleader) was found on campus in a bag he was carrying and ditched when he saw he was about to be confronted by police.

I’m actually in favor of licensed concealed carry on college campuses, but given this man’s violent and hateful rhetoric we cannot rule out some violent intention behind this. He is currently in hiding with his father pleading for him to surrender to police.
