In Regards to Doxxing

I can't believe I actually have to make this post, but it seems to be necessary. For those that don't know, Doxxing is a general term for obtaining someones personal info and posting it online. And this is not moral and possibly criminal depending on the result.

It seems to be a recent trend to dox people for 'racism' whether real or imagined. The net cast by this movement ranges from genuine Klan members and real racists all the way to people who just disagree with the pro-Michael Brown supporters. In all cases, even those dealing with genuinely despicable individuals it is morally wrong to dox someone. I'm not one to cite philosophers on things like this, but Kant put it very well,

"Act only on that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law."

This means that you should act as if everyone would do as you did. In this case the argument is that if everyone doxxed those who disagreed with them, what would the internet be like? Pretty shit, because it would kneecap any freedom of expression and ideas for fear of cyber-vigilantes taking personal information.

I am making this post in the (very very faint) hope that those who are doxxing others will stop and question the ethics of their actions. I understand you disagree with what these people are saying. I'm not asking you stop on their behalf, but in the interest of the liberty and security of everyone.
