Every time I read someone say "I didn't understand" insert complex social issue here" I die a little inside. This is like little kids being taught by slightly bigger kids about sex. None of them have any idea what they're talking about and it's basically a bunch of myths being circulated.
Social hostilities toward religion declined in 2013, while government restrictions on religious beliefs and practices remained level. Harassment of Jews, however, reached a seven-year high.
Turns out Christians are the most persecuted religious group in the world, and the Americas are the most religiously tolerant area in the world as well. I'd say I'm surprised but I already knew it.
Social Justice Warriors Are Intellectual Cowards
Plain and simple. I know many of you can back me up on this one. Any time data and facts are brought to table that absolutely refute an argument put forward by one of these morons they will always either quit the argument, or keep diverting and moving the goal posts until there is nowhere left to go.
This is because their arguments are based on emotions, bad data, and pseudo intellectual nonsense. In addition, any time the basic gist of their position is valid, they ratchet it up to 11 and take away any credence it had.
Friends don't let friends be social justice warriors.
Regarding Gamergate and the Opposition: You're All Kind of Assholes
Before I get into this, I need a big preface: I am a life long gamer. I have been playing games since I was at least five or six when I started with Gameboy and Nintendo 64. I got serious into the hobby in late middle school and early high school when I started really getting into the hobby with both modern games and classic consoles. I currently own an NES, SNES, N64, Xbox 360, GBA, and 3DS. In addition I also do a bit of gaming on my PC with stuff like the Total War Series and Red Orchestra. I'm saying all of this to try and get across the point that I am a lifelong gamer and I love the culture and the hobby. That being said; chill the fuck out.
I haven't been terribly involved in the Gamergate scandals, but I have been looking into whats been going on recently and it seems to me both sides are making complete asses of themselves. On the pro-gamergate side I actually find myself agreeing with the core tenants of the movement in that a lot of game journalism is terribly corrupt and biased with a lot of cronyism and other distasteful practices going on.
The problem is that while the majority of people in the pro-gamergate camp are good people who are just trying to better the industry, there is a very sizable and very vocal minority that is making the entire group look like a bunch of immature children. There have been people DDoSing people they disagree with and acting like they are fighting some holy war. This group is also causing some legitimate issues brought up by the gamergate crowd to be seen as some kind of SJW plot when there is value to them.
On the other side I see the anti-gamergate crowd which seems in general to be ignorant of the issues that caused the whole debacle and basically just wants to make it a feminist issue when the larger part of the issue is ethics in gaming journalism and in the industry overall.
I am also seeing a lot of manipulation from those who are under attack for genuine ethical issues who are trying to make it a feminist issue to cover their own ass. There has been a blackout on multiple sites and backlash trying to say that 'gamers' are dead and that the subculture doesn't exist anymore, and other things that don't hold up to scrutiny.
So in regards to the gamergate controversy, I think that everyone needs to take a step back and breath for a moment. We as a group, as a culture, and as gamers need to look hard at these issues, not just at the things that we already agree with, but at the things we don't want to hear regardless of what side you're on. Gaming is an amazing hobby with a great culture with it. However it is not perfect and we can always work to make it better.
Self Esteem and You
Just a note on self esteem. It seems in our society we've gotten it in our heads that everyone is amazing just because they have the odd condition of being able to intake oxygen properly. Everyone is a special snowflake thats amazing in their own way.
I'm here to say this. Thats wrong.
Being special and unique isn't something you just are, its something you work for. Its built off your achievements and trials. Steel isn't dug out of the ground, its forged. The hottest fires and the hardest blows are what make strong steel, and people are much the same way.
You don't become a badass by thinking you are; you get there by training to be one. You don't because an expert in Biology by want to be one, you become one by busting your ass to learn as much as you can and to push the field further.
To all those people who think they're so amazing because they are part of a certain fandom or are genderfluid feminists or fat activists, or whatever your snowflake quality is: come back down to earth. Theres actual work to do!
If you hate people because of their skin; you're probably scum.
If you hate people because of their gender; you're probably scum.
If you hate people because of their faith; you're probably scum.
If you hate people because of their sexuality; you're probably scum.
If you mooch of the system by choice; you're probably scum
If you want to take away others' rights because of your feelings; you're probably scum
If there is nothing you are willing to endanger yourself for; you are probably scum.
I don't give a flying shit if you're straight, gay, black, white, trans, cis, or whatever other meaningless category you want to be in. Will I make fun of you for it? Maybe, that depends on how seriously you take yourself. (The more serious, the more I make fun of you). However, I will not hate you for it.
There are way better reasons to hate someone.
Men get all the good stuff amirite?
