No, literally. Maybe we need to pick up an extra Plan B or O-pill pack next time we’re at the store, for someone who might need it. Maybe we need to befriend people to create social networks if ever they wind up in an unsafe position. Maybe we need to provide microdonations to get each other bus fare or a hot meal. Maybe we need to at least discuss banned books. Maybe this is how we start making things better.
As somebody who grew up in a war: I promise to you, you will be fine. It will hurt like fucking hell, it will drain you, but from the darkest times you will see humanity emerging. You have a unique opportunity to see just which politicians are truly, exceptionally moral, brave and deserve your trust.
Meanwhile, always go local, go small - help your neighbour out, help your friends out. This is the time for the conscious, brave and true collective to start weaving the bond to each other.
Educate the most vulnerable: children. There is no book that can be banned that doesn’t already live rent free in the collective mind. The very notion of a ban, whether on books, thoughts, marriages or humans, will prompt bravery one never thought they’re capable of.
The world is with you, dear American friends. You will get through this, I promise.
And remember one thing: the hand that chokes you deserves to be cut off.
