Goshka Datsov ‘Mary Magdalene’s Dream’ 1914

Goshka Savov Datsov (1885 - 1917) is a Bulgarian painter, one of the first ones to be influenced by the symbolism art movement.

Studies in the Art academy in Rome, but returns to Bulgaria in 1914 to present his art that he made whilst abroad.

During the First World War he was mobilized as a military artist to the Fourth Division until his death on the Macedonian front in 1917.

In addition to battle painting, Datsov also left many colorful landscapes, figurative compositions, nudes and still lifes with flowers.

In this painting, Datsov shows us Mary Magdalene’s dream involving Jesus. She was a woman who sinned before repenting herself and started to follow his teachings. This is a great representation of one of the seven deadly sins, lust, as it shows Mary Magdalene, a woman, lusting and wanting the man behind the saint.
