Co-curated by Kathy Taslitz and Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman, “Life In This Ocean” explores contemporary culture through a female lens. Long-standing ideas are challenged by a changing ethos, with technology as a driving force behind the transformation. Unconventional characters and images become relatable through familiar themes that appear to be in conflict like strength and vulnerability, humans and nature, history and modernity, femininity and masculinity.
Utilizing a variety of materials and mediums, artists Kathy Taslitz, Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman, Lena Rushing, and Donna Bates pay homage to the diverse landscape of #LosAngeles – from edgy urban to natural settings. This collection rooted in the local culture, depicts subjects that are both unexpected and universally accessible.
In this exhibition, four artists with distinctly different styles harmonize together, their artwork deeply connected by their experience as women and a narrative that speaks to the collective human condition.
On view at the ANNENBERG COMMUNITY BEACH HOUSE SEPTEMBER 29, 2018-JANUARY 7, 2019
Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman’s ‘Dream Ocean’ is representative of the deep, wide world and women's place in it. Our ever-changing liquid landscape is full of high and low tides, advancements and atrocities. Listening to the inner voice, seemingly unrelated images have been combined to create these "dreams" that reflect many shimmering aspects of womanliness and naturalism - including resilience and imagination.
