The Trilemma Of Life

Years ago I came across the following lines:

Success - Social Life - Enough Sleep; You can only have 2 out of 3. Choose.

For years I believed in this theory. I lived by it. I was absolutely sure that for me there is no other way to live life.

But I am literally tired of it. Feeling horrible after 3 hours of sleep, drinking coffee and coke/xyz just to stay on track, spending entire weekend days sleeping...

So I started questioning.

Imagine you mastered this trilemma: The “holy grail”: success (in your professional life or whatever you care about), still seeing your friends and family + not feeling like crap all the time.

Sounds fantastic?

Here is my idea to get this done:

  1. start sleeping more.
  2. make your family, a few friends and what brings the most joy to you your ultimate top priorities.
  3. rigorously downgrade everything else.
  4. intensively supplement your life with exercise/sports of your choice.

A closing thought:

Every living creature on earth has to sleep. Maybe this also applies to blogging entrepreneurs - like me.

Your m - now going to bed.

<Dreams or Safety>

(According to this insanely wise blackboard the master himself summed life up in a bit less than 5 lines.)

Every single day you can decide to either move towards your goals/dreams/aspirations or towards safety/comfort.

Unfortunately: as your dreams/... cannot be something you are able to reach easily or routinely (if it was you would never consider it a dream. You’d rather call it normality...), the movement towards those desirable achievements ALWAYS comes with risk and uncertainty.

Fact: Your growth cannot happen inside your comfort zone! That’s simply against its nature!

Both directions can appear to be right/superior/appealing at times. But whatever you decide, keep one thing in mind:

you can just go in one way or the other - as Abraham said:

Light Switches & Life

Intro:

When it comes to new, big life projects (a new job, starting a business or a family, moving to a different county, etc.) many of us tend to... wait, doubt, rethink and reevaluate - in one word: we HESITATE. Sometimes for years.

We believe that just because we’re not able to see the entire picture we’re not ready yet. Just because we can’t tell what the future holds we’re not “worthy” to seeking it.

Instead, we keep asking/hoping/wishing/waiting for a plan, a playbook, a blueprint or a hack that assures eventual success.

The Phenomenon:

Imagine entering a dark room (= the endeavor you would like to pursue in the future) in your cellar for example. Before you set the first step into that room you are reaching for that tiny switch in order to flood the entire space with light.  That is what we all are reaching for - that switch that brings light and safety + the ability to see all upcoming obstacles.

Life though works differently!

You will never find that switch.  BUT: you can use a flashlight (= your skills, know-how and common sense).

Actually, you don’t need to see the entire room. Lighting that first part, making sure not to stumble right away, is by far enough.
And as you enter the room step by step the light travels with you further and further into the darkness.

Why hoping for a switch such a problem?

  1. While waiting for the perfect moment when all stars magically align, life passes by.
  2. You know what they say:  “Doubt has destroyed more dreams than failure ever will.”  They are right. What if the blueprint never roles around the corner?! Ignoring all opportunities just because risk and uncertainty are still not extinct completely?
  3. There is a great chance, that opportunity vanishes before you finished your fight with doubt and darkness... Which will leave you with nothing but regret.

But if all of this is not convincing you yet, (I see you’re that doubter type obviously) - you might wanna listen to J.P.:

Many of us... including me. Now finally making use of that flashlight!

The Many Faces Of Success

This is an important one:

Success does NOT only equal money and recognition!  That is simply not true - no matter how often some people may state it.

In fact, it comes in strange, weird forms and shapes - you just need to be open and recognize it.

Here are some truly successful moments from my life - so far:

  • When your last two bosses unite forming their own business and call you to offer you are management position (which you have to decline, knowing that it is not the right path for you)
  • When you receive the farewell email from a dear friend and colleague who you once convinced to join the company years ago, telling you that he had a great time and is now leaving as a better professional and wiser person.
  • When your brother asks you to spend time with him and his family, just because they enjoy being around you.
  • When your girl asks you to help her with a business challenge because “you are the best I know doing this” - as she said.
  • When a young colleague asks for your advice on how to handle a difficult situation in the office - just like you addressed your mentors years ago.
  • When you suddenly realize that your most important relationships are close and healthy although you have so much going on all the time.
  • When you finally reach that goal you have silently and secretly worked for so long - no parade, no posts, no standing ovations, just you, knowing you made it.
  • When you notice that hundreds of readers have liked or reposted your Tumblr post from yesterday night - not for the reach or recognition but for the feeling that your thoughts meant something to them.
  • When you are able to see your life as a whole (in a rare moment of silence and reflection) and feel pretty happy about it. Falling asleep smiling.

What I am trying to express:  “Success” can have so many meanings and appears in so many different contexts. Money, power, cars, corner offices, followers and fame, ... are just a few possible expressions - highly over-represented, highly overrated.

So how do open up for all those other forms?

Why not create a list yourself - as a starting point?! Here are just a few examples of contexts in order to inspire your version of my little list above:

  • fulfilling your own expectations (the blueprint of yourself)
  • inspiring others or making their days better in some way
  • growing as a person, becoming who you always wanted to be
  • receiving positive feedback from those around you - be it admiration, respect, applause, consent, or anything of that kind.
  • making a difference in something you truly care about
  • ...
  • being free, living YOUR life
Simply keep in mind, that success can be achieved in various contexts  and you’ll find it in places you never thought of before!

The greatest reward for what we do is not what we receive in return at the finish line, but who we become along the way?

I read this years ago somewhere & have let it guide me through life ever since.

This is a 100% true - for a 100% of life.

Take away #1: Only what you DO makes you become who you desire to be.

Side effect: This can serve you great in the moment of doubt. Whatever you are going through or pursuing right now - when things get tough, ask yourself who you will become by sticking to it.

Take away #2: If this future version of yourself is worth all the effort - keep going!

May this concept work for you as it did & does for me!

Why Talents are Tools

Two quotes by two very different men (each a force in his field), one unanimous message:

“Be proud of your decisions, not your talents.”

- by Jeff Bezos to his children

“It is not our abilities that show what we truly are, it is our choices.” (Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC7Aqc-h9no

- by Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore from Harry Potter

My two cents condensed in a conclusion:

Talents like intellect, creativity or courage are gifts - they’re given to you. Noting but the tools and instruments you were initially equipped with...

Yet: what you make out of it, what roads you choose to take and which not, what goals you pursue, what to invest in and what to avoid or neglect - that is what defines your life and your person.

Keeping that in mind, helped me to understand life as a buffet of adventures you can choose from. The equipment you bring is secondary and will adjust largely if necessary.

"It's a grain of sand in the oyster that creates the pearl."

American proverb

We all develop shells - as humans, as businesses, as professionals, ... for protection and to deal with the circumstances life throws at us. (I get that and can see the upside here.)

Yet:

Once in a while a little bit of external input can be REALLY valuable. It can easily change the end result as well as the journey... #oyster

Therefore:

Dare to ask for advice or a second opinion. Get yourself external input from someone you trust (mentor, advisor, friend, etc.). Listen to feedback and suggestions. Accept not knowing it all. ...

Be aware and open in order to spot a grain when you come about it...

By the way: it is nothing but the salty sea surrounding that shell that makes all the taste - just like the environment forms/influences a person or a business.

Best of luck.

Very much resonates with what I think & feel.

The last year has taught me to be grateful, humble and happy!

It seems to be as tragic as it is true: you got to lose something to realize what it means to you and how the 🌍 (= your life) would be without it. Seems to apply to goods and people (often 💛 ones) as well as to immaterial “things” like freedom, trust, happiness and health…

A basic example: you HAVE to be injured, hurt or ill to realize the true value of health. You cannot be grateful, no matter how often you stress to be. It doesn’t work that way!

Lose it (for a while, suffer, be 😠 and 😔, regret, sob, … recover - that feeling, that you experience in that moment and from then on - that is gratitude!

“True emotions are moments - everything else is neurotic” - as my father always says. Certainly true for this type of emotions.

Best of luck and all the luck in the 🌍 Your m

He who is willing to share what he knows can sell what he does.

Discussed this with a bunch of smart people, tested it myself, asked clients and high achievers… this turns out to be true on many levels and in many industries.

The baseline:

The expert who gives a good, professioanl, complete and competent answer when asked (without sending an invoice in return!) will be trusted when the day comes or when more answers are being needed.

The idea:

If you are an expert in your field, it could be worth giving away some of your knowledge and wisdom - you might end up receiving a lot more in return.

The benefit:

Only very few are willing to do this. Daring will make you stick out!

Sharing can be a sales strategy, a trust-building method and a customer communications tool - all at once, for free.

Give it a shot: blog, post, share your information or simply answer the next time you’re asked for advice in the best way you can. Chances are about 98% that you will not regret it!

There two things that everybody hates: Change and the way things are.

Wise words found on the web

100% true for millions of employees, citizens, wives & husbands, ...

Many people brag about the status quo but are doing everything they can to maintain it - at the same time.

Imagine saying: “It CANNOT stay the way it is!” and  “All this is familiar, secure, and comfortably predictable - it feels right as long as nothing changes!”  directly one after the other.

Absurd and contradictory but reality.

17 January 2014 - top of Table mountain, Cape Town, South Africa:

My brother and I walked up there together, made a break right on the edge of the plateau (in the middle of the clouds “falling” as part of the famous tablecloth over Table Mountain) and enjoyed the amazing view.

This is one of the happiest memories I have. 25 minutes I will NEVER forget.

Why do I share that with you:

Reason A) As you might already know I believe that life is about the people you connect with and the things you create with them.

This climb is the perfect example of what really makes me happy - might be true for you as well…

  • being together with the two handfuls of individuals I honestly really really care about.
  • going through adventures side by side with them.
  • creating memories and stories I will smile about for the rest of my life.
  • chasing down my personal bucket list items.

I plan to follow this recipe for the decades to come - hoping to eventually end up with a fulfilled life, a head full of great memories and a sun-kissed soul.

Reason B) The invisible bucket list

We all do have things we wish to happen or achieve one day. (If you are reading this blog you are very likely to have a bucket list, a daily to-do list, etc.) And we all spend a large part of our lives on checking the items listed.

But what I found is, that there are more items on that most important list than I can see.

Once in a while I suddenly find myself in awesome places - physically, intellectually or emotionally… that enrich my life - without ever being on any of my lists. It is as there was a visible and an invisible part of my bucket list.

In my example: I had no idea that table mountain would be that relevant to me… we had decided to do that tour the evening before, had no expectation and certainly no plan to make a break right on that spot. But as we sat there, I knew that this is one of those rare “invisible items”.

But don’t worry, as, with all matter of the heart, you’ll know when you found it.

May you have a lot of these moments.

Sidestory / Annotation:

Where Memories Form

Due to a hilarious dressing mistake (while turning my cap, I must have flipped the brand tag upside down and therefore unconsciously wore a piece of paper on the middle of my forehead over the entire trip) I messed up all the selfies we took that day. That is why I do not possess one single pic with my brother and me, nor a selfie from that situation on the top of the mountain high above one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. I have never had the chance to share it on social media tagging him, making it my new profile pic, adding it to my feed or sending it to anyone in specific... And you know what: the fact that I have no picture of that moment does NOT make it less true or memorable! The experience itself and the minutes we two spend up there were amazing - they have formed a memory I will never forget no matter if we have proof for it or not! By the way: I can recall the entire conversation and a million details (for example what we wore) from that day... Memories are moments you conserve forever - they form in your mind, not on the screen of your phone! PS: Be aware that some of the most important and most iconic things in your life will definitely NOT be captured in a picture! The death of a parent, the proposal of your future husband, the birth of your child, the few words that changed everything, ... All of these moments will only exist as memories! You better learn/practice making them!Your m

Being rich is possessing money. Being wealthy is having time and options.

First of all: I truly believe that wealth actually means having the chance of doing what you love (potentially whenever you want). We all dream about this in one way or the other... knowing that you can get back money, but not time...

Yet isn’t it suprising that our society has absolutely and completely accepted trading (life) time for money (you do that evrey day in your job spending your hours at work in exchange for a salery) - but not vice versa! You automatically need to defend and explain yourself to others when trading money for time (hiring a personal assistant, getting cleaning help, ordering food instead of cooking, or take a personal trainer).

Although we all understand that you can buy one with the other - people still value money over time. Getting monetary rich over becoming wealthy... #Idontgetit

If you know your way you don’t have to pause at every crossroads.

very smart fortune cookie from a recent lunch

Another pretty philosophical post again:

Beyond everything else, two things matter in life: the time you have left and the direction you’re going (= what life you are going to pursue, what are you shooting for or chasing after)

Now here’s the interesting thing about this: you cannot know how many days you got left - none of us does - BUT we can decide on the direction we take.

Yet, who does?!

  • How many people do you know who are driven by a cause or mission?
  • How many of your friends, relatives, neighbors, and teammates are on the way to something big and consciously chosen?
  • How many are determined by the rat race, financial pressure, the opinion of others, the expectations of parents and bosses, or even their own resume?
  • How many care more about tonight’s party and today's tv program than about their very own future?
  • How many know more about the latest fashion trends and sports results than about their dreams and aspirations?

I mean I know, life keeps you busy, that’s for sure …but someday your time will be up and you’ll look back seeing your trace being full of turns, random curves and dead ends, taking you here and there…

My point in short:

When life is short and time is precious - why are you strolling around then? Why not thinking about what to persue, if it is the only thing to decide yourself? Why not committing to a big goal, deciding on one direction and sprinting?

Yes, it is hard to find that goal and to decide within a million options, but NO ONE is going to do it for you and it won’t hit you while watching Netflix either!

I believe in these famous lines:

“… I am the master of my fate,      I am the captain of my soul.” - William Ernest Henley

Yet, thinking about (step 1), deciding on (step 2) and keeping in mind where you’re heading (step 3) is where it all begins for every master or captain!

Best of luck finding your direction!

I have to remind myself on this once in while...

Between all those items on your list - there is blank space, beyond all those milestones - there are goals that cannot be measured by KPIs, besides the meetings and lunch dates, appointments and jour fixes - there is more than just uncovered time on your calendar. ... those invisible items are the ones that (might) matter most.

Don’t be so busy that you forget to live your life, my friend!
