Julius & the Javelin
You’ve heard me say this before... but I cannot stress this enough...
We are living in the first time in the history of mankind where you can become world class in whatever you want to - as education is avaialbe literally EVERYWHERE and ANYTIME.
Best-practice, living legend and the ultimate reference for this statement: Julius Yego
His story:
Julius (born 4 January 1989) is a Kenyan track and field athlete who competes in the javelin throw. He is 1.75m tall (not your typical javelin athlete) and comes from one of the greatest running nations there on the planet.
What is so special about his story:
NO COACH, JUST YOUTUBE.
As he was lacking a coach, training partners an also facilities he looked out for other sources of input...
Julius learned how to throw javelin ONLY by watching YouTube videos of javelin athletes from all over the world.
People nicknamed him "Mr. YouTube" and “YouTube Man” for doing so.
Today Yego is the African record and Commonwealth record holder for the event with a personal best of 92.72 m. He won the World Championships in 2015 and made the silver medal in the 2016 Olympics!
All his accomplishments in overview:
- 1st place at the All-Africa Games in 2011
- 1st place at the African Championships in Athletics in 2012 and 2014;
- 4t place at the 2013 World Championships
- 1st place at the Commonwealth Games 2014
- 1st place at the 2015 World Championships (92.72m), becoming the first Kenyan to win a World Championships gold medal in a field event.
- 2nd place at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
- 1st place at the African Championships 2018
As Julius’ example has shown - thanks to the www (which most people exclusively use for entertainment), you can acquire literally any skill everywhere!
- Ice fishing in Italy?
- Building a tree house for the very first time?
- Reading Hieroglyphs?
- Picking up sword fighting without a coach?
- A summary of physics class you couldn’t understand?
- The dance move you saw lately?
Everything you need is where you chitchat with your friends, listen to music and play your favorite games. Actually, believe it or not - all that is even already inside your pocket, right behind the screen of your cell phone...
You are probably spending hours every day right next to the skill that you would love to have - without looking at it. #CrazyWorld
Please take away this one:
You can become this ...
... by doing this:
... in any field of choice.
Use this to your advantage!
Or in Julius’ words:
“The answers are there!”
