What is essential to success? Attitude, know-how, commitment, mindset, ideas? Probably all of that... And therefore these SUCCESSENTIALS are what this blog will be about.

Julius & the Javelin

You’ve heard me say this before... but I cannot stress this enough...

We are living in the first time in the history of mankind where you can become world class in whatever you want to - as education is avaialbe literally EVERYWHERE and ANYTIME.

Best-practice, living legend and the ultimate reference for this statement: Julius Yego

His story:

Julius (born 4 January 1989) is a Kenyan track and field athlete who competes in the javelin throw. He is 1.75m tall (not your typical javelin athlete) and comes from one of the greatest running nations there on the planet.

What is so special about his story:

NO COACH, JUST YOUTUBE.

As he was lacking a coach, training partners an also facilities he looked out for other sources of input...

Julius learned how to throw javelin ONLY by watching YouTube videos of javelin athletes from all over the world.

People nicknamed him "Mr. YouTube" and “YouTube Man” for doing so.

Today Yego is the African record and Commonwealth record holder for the event with a personal best of 92.72 m. He won the World Championships in 2015 and made the silver medal in the 2016 Olympics!

All his accomplishments in overview:

  • 1st place at the All-Africa Games in 2011
  • 1st place at the African Championships in Athletics in 2012 and 2014;
  • 4t place at the 2013 World Championships
  • 1st place at the Commonwealth Games 2014
  • 1st place at the 2015 World Championships (92.72m), becoming the first Kenyan to win a World Championships gold medal in a field event.
  • 2nd place at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
  • 1st place at the African Championships 2018

As Julius’ example has shown - thanks to the www (which most people exclusively use for entertainment), you can acquire literally any skill everywhere!

  • Ice fishing in Italy?
  • Building a tree house for the very first time?
  • Reading Hieroglyphs?
  • Picking up sword fighting without a coach?
  • A summary of physics class you couldn’t understand?
  • The dance move you saw lately?

Everything you need is where you chitchat with your friends, listen to music and play your favorite games. Actually, believe it or not - all that is even already inside your pocket, right behind the screen of your cell phone...

You are probably spending hours every day right next to the skill that you would love to have - without looking at it. #CrazyWorld

Please take away this one:

You can become this ...

... by doing this:

... in any field of choice.

Use this to your advantage!

Or in Julius’ words:

“The answers are there!”

The Lower End of Your To Do List

Your roof is perfect?

Good for you!

But what about ...

  • your passwords?
  • your LinkedIn profile?
  • the friends you wanted to call for a decade?
  • giving back to your parents?
  • taking your girl out?
  • learning something new?
  • taking care of your network?
  • working on your next career move?

Note: When life is good - that is when you need to work and prepare for tougher times. NEVER allow yourself to be bored!

Conversation Notes

Do you know that situation:

You are having a great conversation with someone who shares rich content or giving you valuable input (for example a good friend, your mentor, a smart colleague or one of your business partners) and you come across a topic you would love to look up, share or dive more into - so you take a note somewhere…

But it is the moment when you need that same person for the next time when you realize that unfortunately you haven’t followed up on that note… for whatever reason.

Although I do have a well functioning to list I have struggled with this topic a lot in the past.

Here is my (new and perfectly working) solution to this:

posting the conversation notes (key words are absolutely sufficient) marked with a symbol of your choice (for example “#”) directly into the WhatsApp chat with the specific person. You can easily do this while speaking.

What happens:

  1. the other person sees you taking notes, noticing that you find his/her input valuable.
  2. you are seeing the note at of your WhatsApp chats - a place where you are probably going various times a day…
  3. as soon as you get in contact with that person again (for example to set up the next meeting) you stumble over that note again reminding you of your homework. Chances are that you DO follow up as planned.
  4. both of you are reminded of that specific topic and can easily followed up on that specific topic in the next conversation.

Give it a try, it’s absolutely worth it
