If You Cannot Start: Sprint

An idea I caught up reading an article about procrastination:

We all know this and it happens to me all the time: you find yourself facing a big task or long-term project. Something that will take "forever” to complete. And you cannot manage to start. You postpone it over and over - or in other words: you procrastinate on it.

But there is a great way to attack especially those tasks you know you cannot complete in one session or even right away:

Make a deal with yourself to sprint for only 10 or 15 mins before putting the stuff aside - no matter how far you’ve come.

You’ll notice right away that it becomes a lot easier to kick things off. And whatever you will accomplish within that time span is a lot more than what you would have had if you had just shied away again.

You made it out of the stance and passed the first couple of meters!

Making that deal and sprinting somewhere is how you make a small step towards your end goal.

I love the idea - and by the way: this is how a lot of my posts on this blog are being created.

Life & Lists

Maybe our most powerfull tool as entrepreneurs - but also the most hated one... THE LIST.

“Some of Virgin’s most successful companies have been born from random moments – if we hadn't opened our notebooks, they would never have happened.” -  @richardbranson

“I have always lived my life by making lists. These vary from lists of people to call, lists of ideas, lists of companies to set up, lists of people who can make things happen. I also have lists of topics to blog about, lists of tweets to send, and lists of upcoming plans...”

Here are Richard’s 10 tips to succeed with lists:

(I felt free to mark those that seemed especially important to me...)

  1. Write down every single idea you have, no matter how big or small
  2. Always carry a notebook
  3. Find a list method that works for you.
  4. Make a list of small, manageable tasks to complete every day
  5. Mark off every completed task youll find making each tick very satisfying
  6. Make your goals measurable so you know if your plans are working
  7. Set far off, outlandish goals. What do you want to have achieved by 2020? How about 2050?
  8. Include personal goals in your lists, not just business
  9. Share your goals with others. You can help motivate each other further
  10. Celebrate your successes then make new lists of new goal

Another good read about Richard’s way of organisation: “Why Richard Branson Never Goes Anywhere Without A Notebook” http://www.businessinsider.com/richard-branson-productivity-hack-2014-9?IR=T

Lists can save your life as an entrepreneur. The set you free from having to remeber everything (therefore they “create” new capacity in your head), they are the reliable piece of orientation you can hold on to... done right, they can turn chaos into order!

Truth be told... What I use to end up with sometimes looks very much like this:

Why?

Because making the list is only a third of the magic.

The three steps to make them work for you:

  1. Create them (see above)
  2. Prioritze what to do now, later, not at all
  3. Follow-up/Update

But:

Do not focus too much on getting things off your list. You might end up feeling like Sisyphos...

If you do things right in life, more things will pop up than you can x out. Or as this one quote sais:

"Success is never getting to the bottom of your to do list."

From my experience this is quite true for most innovative and many successful people.

Therefore:

Don’t worry too much, stick to your lists... and just keep going.

This applies to your to do list, as well as to your bucket list and all the others...

So you think you work a lot...

Wanna know what commitment really looks like?

“I never took a day off in my twenties. Not one.”

- Bill Gates, today the richest person on the planet (He held that title for 16 out of the last 21 years).

He dedicated his entire youth to his dream. Doing so he made a fortune, built an empire, lived one of the most exciting lives in history, became a business legend, a famous philanthropist - and changed the world.

Here is a documentary on him and his path...
