Style Five Week - Day 2 [MAKOTO]
There’s nothing to fear when Mako-chan’s there to catch you!
I know Future Fish was a Day 1 prompt, but I ended up wanting a full set, so~
Mako-chan Appreciation Day
“Eh? What’s all this?”
Makoto stood in the doorway of Haru’s house, mouth wide open in surprise. Balloons crowded practically all that Makoto could see and a delicious smell was coming from somewhere in the house (and it wasn’t mackerel for once).
“Haru?” Makoto called out, closing the door behind him. “I got your text.” He started walking in the direction of the living room, pausing to swat some balloons out of his way. “Hey Ha-” He paused.
Haru, Nagisa, Rei, and Rin looked up in surprise as Makoto walked into the living room. Varying expressions of shock showed on their faces. Finally, Nagisa broke the silence. “It’s Mako-chan Appreciation Day!”
“Mako- Huh?” Makoto said. He took a few more steps inside and sat down next to Haru on the ground.
“We decided that you do a lot of things for us, Makoto-senpai,” Rei said.
“So we invited you over so we could tell you what you mean to us,” added Rin.
“You were in on this too, Haru?” Makoto asked, looking over at the boy.
Haru nodded. “It was Nagisa’s idea.”
Nagisa grinned and stuck his tongue out, flashing a peace sign. “Yup!”
“You guys…” Makoto said, smiling widely.
“Oi, don’t start crying yet,” Rin joked, elbowing Makoto in the side. “We haven’t even gotten to the sappy part.”
“I thought we were going to eat first,” whined Nagisa.
“Nagisa-kun, the food can wait. Today is about Makoto-senpai,” Rei chided.
“Okay fine, as long as I get to talk about Mako-chan first,” Nagisa said. He clapped his hands. “Okay! Mako-chan, you and Haru-chan and Rin-chan were my best friends in elementary school. When I moved but came back to Iwatobi High, I thought things would be awkward.” He gave Makoto a smile. “But that wasn’t the case. You treated me like we had been together for all those missing years. So thank you!”
“Thank you, Nagisa,” Makoto smiled. “That was nice.”
“My turn,” Rei said. “Makoto-senpai, when we went out to training camp, you risked your life to save me even though you’re afraid of the ocean. If you hadn’t, who knows if I would be here right now. You haven’t even known me as long as the others. But still, you saved me. Thank you.”
Nagisa started applauding and cheered, “Yay Rei-chan! Yay Mako-chan!”
“Oi, Nagisa, pipe down,” Rin remarked, grinning. “It’s my turn to make Makoto cry.”
“I’m not crying,” Makoto protested lightheartedly. “I probably will, though.”
Rin let out a huge sigh and leaned back on the palms of his hands. “Do you remember in the sixth grade when Haru almost drowned in the river?”
Makoto felt Haru tense up but he nodded. “Yeah. He had to go to the hospital.”
“I will never forget how scared you were. And I told you I was worried, and you immediately told me that Haru would be fine. But then I said that I was only worried because you were shaking so much.
“Anyways that’s how we became friends. And so I saw how great of a guy you are. Only you would be more scared than the person who actually almost drowned.”
“Because I’m a coward?” Makoto joked.
Rin smiled, but then he said, “No. Because you’re kind.”
Makoto felt tears prickle in his eyes and he willed them to stay in. “Thank you, Rin,” he whispered.
“Haru-chan’s turn, Haru-chan’s turrrrrn!” Nagisa said loudly.
“Well…” Haru started to say. He sat for a long while, trying to think of words to say. Finally, “You’re my best friend.”
Silence.
“That’s it?!” Rin yelled. “I say this long speech and you just say that?”
Haru huffed, clearly annoyed. “Makoto knows what I mean.”
And he did. “Thank you, Haru.” He smiled. And Haru looked back, which was his own little version of a smile, Makoto supposed.
“Anyway, Makoto-senpai, we just wanted to say thank you,” Rei said, breaking the silence.
“For everything that you’ve done in all these years,” Rin added.
“And for being you,” Haru said quietly.
“We love you, Mako-chan!” Nagisa grinned.
Makoto felt his heart burst with love. “You guys…” he said, his voice breaking. Tears blurred his vision and all at once they started spilling over until he was full-on sobbing.
“Aah! Mako-chan, don’t cry!”
“I’m crying because I’m happy.”
“Oi, Haru made dinner.”
“It’s your favorite, green curry.”
“Ack! Haruka-senpai you made him cry even more!”
“I didn’t mean to.”
“You guys… this is too much… I love you all.”
“Yeah, yeah, we love you too, you big baby. Let’s eat, yeah?”
“Okay.”
For Day 2 of Style Five Week! I really liked this once because I love writing my baby being appreciated and happy.
P.S. Writing with all five is a challenge but I’m glad I’m working on it.
