I need to talk for a second about Emma’s reaction to wish!Hook. I mean, yeah, it was funny, haha, but also… I think it shows us quite a lot about them as a couple. He’s posturing and being pretty ridiculous but she doesn’t mock him, or rise to him. She’s there in the background, hiding a smile or biting back laughter and making her Emma faces, like “this idiot, oh my god”. She talks to him in that gentle voice that says she cares about him. She makes those wry, snarky remarks but in a teasing way.

The whole time, she just has this good-naturedly exasperated attitude, like “oh what have you done now”. Even if you’d never seen these two characters before, you’d know that they’re close. That she knows him and loves him, no matter what. That she understands him in a way that maybe he (or this version of him) doesn’t even understand himself. That they have the kind of relationship where they’ll tease and torment each other, but also have each other’s backs, 100%.

And it’s not even really him, and she’s aware of that, but you still get this insight into them as a couple. More than ever you can see her treating him like someone she’s really close to, and honest with, someone she knows really well and loves despite (or because of) all his quirks and flaws. It’s a lovely touch.

As someone in her thirties watching OUAT

I have to say something.

I’ve seen this post today mentioning Rapunzel’s age on Tangled, and I was thinking about how in all the fairy tales the princesses are usually 18 (maybe even less, never more).

When I was a child they have always seemed to me so adult, so mature. I couldn’t wait to get to this age and become a woman of my own (and if it comes with a prince, even better).

But then the years pass (still no prince in sight in case you were wondering), but I finally do feel like a woman. And as such, I look back at age 18, and I don’t see it as an age where I was really an adult. I truly didn’t know anything about life yet back then. I didn’t know who I was, not for real anyway. And I just look at these princesses now, from the wisdom of my age, and just think, whoa, whoa, what’s the rush? You have your all life in front of you to get to know yourself, then meeting that prince (or princess, or even no one in particular). All these fairy tales seem even more unreal somehow.

But then it suddenly hit me, my favorite princess is actually a woman in her thirties:

Her fairy tale story began when she turned 28 and not 18!

No offence to those of you who are still teenagers or in their early twenties, trust me, one day you will maybe understand this post better, or maybe you are even getting it now, but I just want to take this post to acknowledge the fact that A&E chose the proper age for their princess to began her journey as a swan in oppose to a duckling.

Emma of age 18 was thrown into jail, and had a baby she gave away for adaption because she was still immature. She was led by the guy she thought was her “prince charming” right into a jail cell, and pregnant, probably because she was still a child who didn’t know herself enough to realize she needs to put herself first (or to use protection…).

It took her 10 more years to come to the point in which she truly knew who Emma Swan was. To become an adult. To be really able of becoming the hero, the savior, the princess.

She regain her son when she was at the right age to become a mother:

She regain her parents certainly at a very old age, but at the age she could tell them how she really felt

But also forgive them from a mature prospective

She was able to use what she learned about herself during her entire life, to fully fulfill her role as the savior and the princess

And she met her true prince (well, pirate) after she knew exactly what she was looking for, what she needed from him, and what she deserves

Don’t get me wrong, at this age people don’t just stop being a little childish

The young spirit is always there at any age. But I feel like Emma (and all of us at this range of ages) knows just a little more about life itself, and she was taking the role of the mature princess at the age it was truly designed for.

Sometimes I scroll down my dash and I see Emma gifs from Season 1 and I remember how much I loved her. This tough woman who just couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. The woman who desperately wanted to let love in but kept everyone at arms distance. I see the way she smiles at people like she’s almost sad because she feels like no matter how close she feels the relationship is  … it is destined to hurt her …

And I see her determination in Season 2. She has a family, she has an explanation and she has people that need her. But this is all so foreign to her. She wants to belong but she feels like she has to emotionally guard herself. I loved her so much.

A gifset from Season 3 comes up and I see yearning. Not just for the handsome pirate that is slowly earning her trust but also yearning for home. To feel like she is a part of something. The gifs from the Season 3 finale are beautiful because she looks like she is breathing an internal sigh of relief as she realizes that she has found what she has been looking for her whole life. My heart is so happy for her.

Emma in gifs from Season 4 has grown so much but old habits die hard and she can’t help but doubt … and wonder how long before this wonderful life gets ripped away from her. Her magic scares her, so many things that she had held dear are proving to not be what they seemed. She is facing the darkness within herself and struggling to stay on the side of good. Her strength and vulnerability is such an amazing journey to witness.

The darkness that consumes her in Season 5 is both a curse and in many ways a blessing. Emma is free to know what she wants but she no longer has the same moral compass that guided her. She loves without reservation and she has moments of joy that I never saw from her before. She faces the worst parts of herself and passes the test to prove her strength and her love.

Damn, I love this character so much. She has such strength and bravery. She makes mistakes and learns from them. She chooses carefully who to share her heart with. I have loved every version of her that I’ve seen and watching her journey unfold continues to inspire me.

Even though Emma and Killian spend most of S3 lowkey heart-eyes’ing each other, I think what I enjoy most about their relationship in that season is that they spend the whole 22 episodes going from enemies to friends. Their dynamic shifts so drastically, and we get to see, yeah, a whole lot of pining, but also a whole lot of friendship. I love this basis for everything that follows. They don’t tumble headfirst into things, they become friends, dare I say, best friends, and basically spend the whole season by each other’s side. That support, understanding, and communication comes naturally. This was such a perfect way to set them up, and their future romantic relationship.

You guys, I just really, really love S3 Captain Swan.

2 weeks down, 11 more to go!

Why I love this scene: Like most Captain Swan scenes, it’s a case of I don’t know, I just do. But whenever I think of the season 3 finale, before the kiss, before the admission of what Killian did with his ship, the open flirtation with Past!Hook, this is always the first scene that comes to mind. It just does. Maybe it’s because this scene, and everything that follows during the ball is so unguarded.

Plus, this scene was everything Captain Swan in season 3 and beyond, incredibly genuine moments.

We frequently talk about Emma’s walls, but let’s talk about the ones smoldering pirate hides behind. His walls are as high as Emma’s. He let’s people see what he wants them to see, and nothing beyond that.

This scene was more than Emma being swept off her feet at her first royal ball, or being the star of her very own fairytale. It was also about Killian dropping his walls for a second, and the pretense that went along with them. This is where Emma was able to see what she refused to see/admit to herself, but what she’s known all along, that there was so much more to Killian when he was pretending there wasn’t. The time travel adventure was a really good insight into who Killian Jones is.

Before this, Killian was a constant in Emma’s life. He set his feelings for her aside to do what was best for her. He supported her, called her out on her ish when she needed to be called out. He was her friend, probably the best friend she’s ever had.

Scenes that have no dialogue in them are always open to interpretation, and my interpretation of this is that Emma is finally allowing herself to go to that place, and realizing that this is no longer about a choice she made back in 3x11 (because she had actively chosen him), and that was taken from her. This is her either falling for him, or having already fallen for him. This is the first moment she has let her guard down since getting back to Storybrooke. In this moment, she’s not trying to fix a crisis, even though it’s a rather big one that threatens her very existence.

She’s just princess to her very own prince charming.

I've seen people complaining about fandom not being fun anymore and it gives me anxiety, do you feel like that?

Not at all. I’m a big believer in controlling my own experience, so if there is something I don’t like I change it. Everything is within my power. I block, unfollow, blacklist, stay away from twitter and the tags and curate my dash so it’s what I want it to be. And while I may speak my mind on my own blog, I don’t go looking for trouble. I tag my posts and I don’t hijack posts or seek to engage with people I’m never going to agree with and whose agenda is the exact opposite of mine. What’s the point?

That applies to shipmates as well as anti-CSers.  For instance there are blogs that produce a lot of quality content, but for my taste lean too far either in Killian or Emma’s direction in their stanning. Their preference, but I’m personally not here for pitting my OTP against each other, so I avoid blogs that tend to do that.  I know there are people out there who don’t want to hear about fandom wank, which I blog about occasionally, and I wouldn’t blame them for unfollowing me.  No hard feelings.

I also find the humor in fandom strife and bad behavior. It helps. A lot. And I’m fully aware that none of the nonsense matters. Because it doesn’t. That also helps.

Look, Captain Swan has become the heart of an ensemble show.  The convergence of perfect casting, actor chemistry and epic storytelling rarely converge like this, Emma and Killian are fictional lightening in a bottle, and of course the writers are going to milk it for all it’s worth which meant eventually focusing heavily on it. And it’s very predictable that not just anti-shippers, but that hard-core fans of all the other characters might feel neglected and revolt. That’s what’s happening.

However, WE ARE THE LUCKY ONES who recognized what a rare and wonderful thing was happening on screen.

We deserve to enjoy it.  So let me encourage you to do whatever you have to, to do just that. If unfollowing a person whose posts give you anxiety makes it better, do that.  If leaving fandom makes it better for you, okay.

But for me, fandom is part of what makes this ship so epic. We are seriously the most SPOILED shippers around…

CANON, FOCUS, FANGURLING - Our ship is actually happening on screen. They are in epic, next-level, no-turning-back love with each other. We’re in the middle of getting amazing storyline and focus, someone made a great gif set about the number of kisses, hugs, meetings etc between these two, and it’s mind blowing. Could you ever dream of shipping something that has so much? And this fandom celebrates and fangurls about every damn moment that happens between them like it’s the first. It is awesome to behold.

ON SCREEN META - Our OTP has sailed a ship together, fired a cannon together and had their names engraved together on the most famous piece of hardware of all time. They are LITERALLY the HOLY GRAIL of ships.  You can’t make this up and it just tickles me.  There are swans-a-swimmin’, fleur de lis on belts, forget-me-knots on wrists and rings, dolls in nurseries, hooks on swords, aspens in photos, etc etc but I also probably wouldn’t have noticed any of the subtleties without shipmates pointing it all out. Thank fandom!

PROMOTION - ABC is promoting the heck out of our favs this season. I mean, is this even life?  Are we all dreaming? Dark Swan was the poster for 5A and Hook is the poster for 5B. Pinch me. Seriously. Someone come over and pinch me. And don’t you just love the freakout, every time OnceABC posts something about CS? Or when the press release comes out and there’s a line about CS?  Or our favs are in the promo stills? Or Adam tweets a dialogue bit, or we see a CS scene in a promo? Or when someone brings us a still from the ABC advisory panel?  I don’t know about you, but I’d know about exactly .01% of this if I wasn’t in fandom. Industrious, eagle-eyed shipmates always making sure we know when there is something new…thank you.

ENGAGEMENT - Perk of being a fantasy/SciFi show, not only do the actors attend compulsory appearances like SDCC and NYCC and meet the fans, there are at least a dozen other conventions where some of them make appearances. Also they interact on social media. I know it’s waned over the last year or two, and most of that has to do with the same reasons fandom is no longer fun for some, but despite that JMo and Colin are still posting.   How big a smile did you get when you saw that the producer on Colin’s new movie tweeted a photo with him last night?  Mine was pretty dang big. (But not nearly as big as when JMo tweeted the photo of her with Colin and Bernard. Good times. And the fandom flail over it… epic.)

SPOILERS - We have a litany of intrepid souls who bring us spoilers from set. We often know who’s filming, what and where. I’ve never been a fan of a show before where it’s been like this. I love the theories and speculation that come from the bits and pieces of info that make our way to us. I love the anticipation for the episodes when we know there’s a big moment, or when we’re fooled into thinking there is nothing for us, but there is!  I love when we’re wrong. And I love when we’re right. And I really love those days when out of nowhere news of JMo and Colin on set together leaks out. And if there’s a horse and a patch of flowers and a kiss all the better. Is there a better feeling in fandom? Not for me. Amazing.

MEDIA COVERAGE - An entire cottage industry of entertainment websites exist to bring us interviews and news. TVLine just celebrated it’s 5th anniversary and it turns out OUAT is it’s most covered show during that time? We are fans of the most covered show.  That means we get a lot of ink, friends. And our OTP, gets a lot of ink.  As a whole we get a lot of actor quotes, tidbits of information and trolling by the creators. Many things for us to ruminate, speculate and obsess over. For my last OTP, Josh/Donna fandom had to live off of ONE Bradley Whitford quote for like 7 years. I’m not kidding. In CS fandom we have enough Colin and JMo quotes about the pairing that most of us have probably forgotten most of them exist.

FANWORKS - I could go on about this all day.  Every time I log on there are dozens of new gif sets, a new, beautiful piece of art either from a well known fandom artist or some talented artist I’ve never heard of before, more well-written, feel-inducing fanfics to read than time to read them and metas that beautifully analyze these characters and our ship.  The active CS fandom alone is comprised of 1000s of people from all over the world, sharing their talent and creativity for all of us to enjoy.  Simply breathtaking. This right here is the fruit of being in a large, active fandom.  Don’t take it for granted, it isn’t a given.

THIS SHIP HAS IT ALL!   And this fandom makes the journey that much better.

So, yeah, I’m enjoying CS fandom, A LOT.

You know for the new year I was thinking of doing a Top 10 Days of 2015 to be a CSer but then I ran out of time before January.  However, maybe I’ll make that post anyway, because this fandom had a lot of very good days.  Actually feel free to send me some suggestions for good days you remember in 2015 (ie SDCC or the day we discovered that Killian’s name was on Excalibur so on and so forth.)

You are in control. Take responsibility for your experience and enjoy the best parts of fandom while ignoring the rest.

and i just love how bored he is, like regina is definitely flirting with him, definitely trying to make sure he’s on her side by whatever means necessarily (girl tryna seduce him, lbr) and he’s so completely unamused because rawr rawr he is scary pirate focused on revenge and nothing can distract him especially no woman he will never waive—oh, pretty blonde

I've been enjoying the season, but that episode through me for a loop. What did you think?

I think it was the most engrossing hour of television I’ve seen in ages.

This arc is exceeding my wildest dreams. When I think about my (rather high) expectations vs the reality of this season, I’m incredulous at what we’ve gotten.

  • Before the season started, I knew Captain Swan would have major focus, but I never dreamed that their love for each other would be the driving force of the entire half season.
  • When we got the spoilers that Dark Swan had a house, I assumed it was chosen by Dark Swan, indulging in her childhood dreams, you would have blown my mind to tell me that Killian had picked it out with Henry’s help.
  • Slightly less mind blowing, but still surprising, that in 5x05 it was Killian’s dreamcatcher DarkSwan was crying over, not Henry’s.
  • When certain journalists kept asking over and over again if Regina and Henry would have an “Operation name” in their quest to save Emma, I would have laughed myself silly to know that it was actually Henry and Hook who would undertake “Operation Light Swan.”
  • When publications continually reported that the Nevengers quest to save Emma would be led by Regina, I knew it was overstated. However, I had no idea that Regina, so far from leading the charge, would be the first one to push her towards darkness, would be the trigger happy one willing to use the dagger at a moment’s notice and be more than willing to put her down in favor of her wicked sister.
  • While I knew Killian would be the most motivated one to find and save Emma, I couldn’t have guessed the degree of his single-minded, almost reckless, determination.
  • While I knew there would be romantic moments in Camelot, I couldn’t have predicted there would an exchange of a ring, numerous declarations of love, multiple TLK attempts and talk of white picket fences and a commitment for the future… not to mention insane amounts of wedding foreshadowing.
  • The presumption it would have required for me to guess that Killian and Emma’s names would end up on the most famous sword of all time and they would end up as the first pair of co-dark ones, is beyond me.
  • In a season when it appeared to be all about saving Emma, I couldn’t have fathomed that it would all come down to the show finally giving so many CS fans exactly what we’ve been asking for, Emma finally fighting, tooth and nail, for Killian, the same way he has always fought for her.

It doesn’t get any more epic than this.

This season is so amazing for Captain Swan, for Emma, and for Killian, that I have ZERO doubts the writers will continue to knock it out of the park.

The last two episodes might kill us, but they’re going to kills us in the best ways. Death by OTP.

So worry not, the writers will protect the integrity of Captain Swan, of this I have no doubt.

Can I just say that I am so happy that it’s JMo who is getting to play this character. Because she’s brought such depth to Emma Swan already, that watching her go dark is such an intense experience because we’re all so in love with Emma that we say things like we know her. And we do. We know the kind of thing she would and wouldn’t do, how she feels about the people in her life. We know that and because we know that and we believe that, watching her act in a way that is so at odds with what we know of her is so disconcerting.

I’m so happy that we get an actress who is so so dedicated to her work, who is so skilled at her work to play this character, to do justice to this storyline.

I am just very happy that Jennifer Morrison plays Emma Swan.
