Working in a brothel wasn’t somewhere Steve ever expected to find himself, but then he’d never expected to quit his shitty corporate hell-job to apprentice as a tattoo artist. Great as it was, his apprenticeship didn’t come with a pay cheque, so eating and keeping a roof over his head meant finding a job that paid actual money. Which was how he’d ended up as the night receptionist in a brothel, accidentally holding Bucky’s hand, with no idea Bucky was going to turn out to be something else he’d never expected.

I was won by quietnighty, who requested Steve getting de-serumed and Bucky responding with “HEY YOU LITTLE MOTHERFUCKER I MISSED YOU BEING THIS SIZE, LET ME TAKE YOU DOWN TO THE GYM AND THROW YOU INTO SOME WALLS.”

The world was full of things no one could have expected.

Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes never expected to fall from a train into decades of torture and killing.

And Bucky, who’d once been the Winter Soldier, who was now an auxiliary to the Avengers, never expected to look down from a rooftop in New York City, where he was keeping watch over the world’s most ineffectual aspirant supervillains, and see a tiny ball of angry sunshine. Fierce and fearless, he loosed feelings in Bucky that he’d thought were gone forever.

Bucky was determined to see him again. The better thing would have been to introduce himself. Not to stealthily follow him as he leapt across the rooftops, strong and agile, feet touching down like he was doing gravity a favour.

It’s Bucky’s birthday, and Steve has prepared a special surprise for him. In which there’s a candlelit dinner, slow dancing, birthday cake and presents, and what can only be described as making love.

Bucky Barnes is a charismatic, flirty asexual man that lives with his awkward pansexual best friend, Steve Rogers.

Steve Rogers doesn’t expect to meet someone when he signs up on a dating website after being persuaded by his mother, especially not someone like Bucky Barnes, who messages him to gush about his dogs, makes him laugh, sparks a little hope in him, and step by step slots himself perfectly in the empty spaces of Steve’s life.

(In which there’s a pair of dogs, chance encounters, first and second kisses, Disney movies, lots of cuddling, and two idiots who fall in love.)

Sometimes Bucky thinks it would be really cute to meet someone in a coffee shop, like in those silly romantic comedies Clint makes him watch. But there is a reason why meet cutes in cafes don’t happen in real life, and it’s because customers suck.

And besides, love fades.

But coffee? Coffee is forever.

Bucky has been in love with Steve Rogers since long before the serum. In that time, being homosexual was taboo, so he kept quiet. Plus, Steve always seemed interested in girls. Flash forward to the twenty-first century, and people are much more accepting of different sexual orientations.

Now he wants to tell his best friend he’s in love with him, but Bucky knows that the relationship will never work because he’s asexual and sex-repulsed.

Bucky is a veteran; a year on from losing his arm and the men of his team on patrol in Afghanistan, he has recovered enough to be living in Brooklyn. It’s here that he starts to think about what the rest of his life is away from the military and how he can move forward beyond that, including questioning his sexuality and finding out what he really wants, or doesn’t want. It’s while at the VA centre that he reads about the Gender and Sexuality Support Group, run by Steve Rogers, and takes the first step to working out who he really is.

He didn’t like sex all that much. Sure it felt nice, but he didn’t care for it. You could get the same results by yourself though. Sex was more or less a thing that could get complicated really, really fast when the girl on your arm noticed that you didn’t notice her in the way she wanted you to.

Bucky comes to terms with his asexuality.

The depression that has resulted from being The Winter Soldier has left Bucky with little to no interest in sex. Seeing as he was more than interested in it before the war, Bucky is rightfully perturbed, even setting out to try to get that spark back . And Steve, well Steve is his rock through it all–always is, really.

(this fic really resonates with me. Reading it actually helped me realize that I’m ace)
