Part 1 of Off The Record

It’s 1923 and silent films are all the rage. With it comes tales of glamour, decadence, and rivalries that fuel the ever growing popularity of cinema. The actors who take on these roles are immortalized on the silver screen, and referred to as gods. Among this pantheon are two rivals, leading men who have stolen the hearts of thousands of women. The first is Steve Rogers, typecast as a man of action and rugged good looks. The other is Bucky Barnes, typecast as a charming and beautiful ladies man. It’s known throughout Tinsel Town that the two loathe each other, so much so they’ve nearly come to blows in the past.

When both are cast in an ambitious film project launched by Stark Studios, they’ll have to learn to get along. It’s the “brilliant” idea of the director that they should share quarters during filming, thinking it will drum up more publicity. Steve isn’t thrilled by the idea, and neither is Bucky. A series of misunderstandings and harsh words create more tension that could jeopardize Steve’s dream and Bucky’s wellbeing.

Sparks indeed will fly, but will they kill each other or come together?

Lord James ‘Bucky’ Barnes had been in love with the theatre since his ninth birthday, or rather, it might be correct to say that he had been in love with the idea of love as he saw it portrayed in the theatre. On his birthday, his parents had taken him to see Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at the Criterion, and he had been hooked. He’d wanted to be an actor ever since, if only it was acceptable for young Lords from good Russian families to enter the theatre. Unfortunately for him, since his aristocratic Russian father had married his rich American mother there had been no mellowing of his old-fashioned views. George Barnes knew with the absolute certainty that only comes from centuries of privilege that his only son, James, would do as he was commanded and grow up to be a Lord, and that Lords did not work for a living, much less act for one.

Lt. James “Bucky” Barnes has had a long day. A cargo plane from Kabul, a 3 hour flight from Istanbul, and another 8-hour flight from Amsterdam, and he’s finally made it to JFK. Just two more flights to go - one to Minneapolis, another to Fairbanks - and he’ll be back at base. He can pack up his stuff, head back home to Brooklyn, and be a civilian again. He’s got his discharge papers; all he has to do now is get through 12 more hours of flying and this long day will be over.

But the hot stranger he’s seated next to on his flight has Bucky wishing that Minneapolis was a little farther away.

Special Agent Bucky Barnes doesn’t think of himself as a hero. He’s dedicated to his career, and if that keeps him far away from home, all the better. His parents think that he should get a less dangerous job and meet a nice Brooklyn girl (or boy) to settle down with. In Brooklyn.

That sounds like Bucky’s definition of a living hell. He’s been running from it for years.

This is an AU of the Steve Rogers problem but stands alone - you don’t have to read that part to understand this.

Bucky is hired as a writer for the hit show ‘The Avengers’. Steve plays the character of ‘Captain America’. The network forbids employee relationships. This is a problem.
