I love gifs like these. Because for just a moment, I can pretend that this really is Steve and the Howling Commandos - and remember back to a time when Steve might’ve had his moments where he really did laugh like that/ And despite everything going on around them and the less-than-ideal circumstances, the Commandos were a family - a band of brothers - who were happy alongside each other in their own way, and shared times like these, even if they were few and far between. 

You’re not the guy to make the sacrifice play, to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you.

also the way these assholes are waaay too chill with some lunatic 25-yearold dressed Like That who casually comments on how he's punched out Adolf Hitler being the one to come rescue them will never not be funny to me. they're just like "fucking figures that's who they'd send. oh well it can't get any weirder than it already has. might as well go along with it" and honestly that's about as close to an actual world war soldier's mentality as they could get I imagine

at this point the rewatch has just turned into me collecting every 0.5 second interaction between the howlies like a crow with very small very frail shiny things

wait okay imagine during the war, the steve and the howlies almost never sees bucky sleep, hes always awake, always taking care of them, always on guard duty, but they never see him REST??? but when they caught him sleeping in against a tree?? youd be surprised how quickly the boys shut up. the absolute love and care they have for bucky is insane, and its not just steve

personally, i feel we did not see enough of the howling commandos AND now that wolverine is officially in the mcu. it feels like a great time for a movie with steve, logan (james), bucky (also james) and the howling commandos fighting together in ww2

thing I’ve realised which alters how I see the howling commandos:

if the actors’ ages reflect the characters’ ages, then all of the Howlies are considerably older than Steve.

The youngest Howlie (after Bucky & Steve) would be eight years older than Steve (that’s Monty). The oldest is eighteen years older.

So they’re a bunch of guys in their 30s and 40s who voluntarily put themselves under the command of a clueless 25 year old whippersnapper who’s never even been in the field before. 

Or, another way to put it: 

Bucky was asked to pick a team to put under Steve’s command and he chose a bunch of much older, seasoned soldiers, because clearly a bunch of kids in their twenties couldn’t be trusted to cope with this idiot.

do you guys ever think about how disgusted of the world the howlies are whenever they see steve and bucky being Soft and thinking just how YOUNG they are? what has the world come to to have these BOYS fighting wars that MEN had caused?? do you ever think about how protective they are of them? like we all know that bucky mother hens them all but like, if buckys in danger or if hes sick? theyre all making him rest, theyre taking his shift on watch, theyre forcing him to sit down. imagine the howlies teaching them little tricks or hacks or skills from experience? teaching our boys basic french phrases? surprised at how fast they learn? imagine the deep conversations they get late at night when they just NEED someone to talk to? bucky telling the howlies how much pain hes in because he cant tell steve that hes HURTING?? AUGH. OUR BOYS WERE SO YOUNG GOD
