A decent chunk of Foundations (and if you haven’t read it this is a major spoiler) is about the TARDIS. The same can be said for Through the Curtain of the Void. But this is so much more direct, more in depth. And writing this last chapter the way I am forces me to get into her head. It’s new but not new at the same time. Certainly strange. I’m used to following the lead characters’ leads. But the TARDIS? Not so much. Still, if I can trust the Doctor and Rose I can trust the TARDIS to not steer me wrong. She’s rather opinionated, I’m learning. She has a lot to say.

Excerpt? Pretty, pretty, please? :D

Hehehehe, you’re too flattering dear.

I was also tagged to do the WIP meme by @megabadbunny, @tenroseforeverandever@skyler10fic, @lostinfic, and @chocolatequeennk. Hint recieved! XD

This is an excerpt of the first bits of chapter four of the readers’ choice special, Through the Curtain of the Void.

It’s a well known fact among thehigher species, and even some lower ones, that Time Lords areflagrantly impolite creatures. The Doctor is no exception tothis paradigm. He might be among the worst, come to think of it. It’sone of his defining traits; he’s said so himself. At times somehave found it charming while others maligned him for it. Most of thetime I don’t mind. His penchant for being dreadfully inconsiderateis partly how we came to be together, my Thief and I. I can’trightly blame him for not stopping to think of me. Why should he?While my Thief has never disregarded my sentience he hasn’t alwaysbeen kind, hasn’t always thought of me as a being with my ownmotives, as a being capable of love, despite our shared andunparalleled affections.
I’d thought that he understoodmy feelings for her, that is until I took them back to that paralleluniverse one last time at his bidding. After spending so many yearswith this man I’ve come to understand his motives (even if he won’tbother to learn mine), which is why I didn’t fight him. But Iwanted to. Desperately. He fed my human Thief and my Bad Wolfexcuses, and all the while the human Thief and himself felt the liefestering between their consciousnesses. I felt it. Their actionswere noble and rooted in love. All the same, they acted on their ownwishes, and part of my Bad Wolf’s. But the other part of her, andall of me, felt that it was wrong. There was another way, a way thatdidn’t involve me having to give her and a piece of myself up.

This chapter of the readers’ choice fic is coming together nicely, I think. It feels like a lot, yet a little happens at the same time. It’s odd. But then again, this fic in itself is a bit odd. I rather like that about it.

« Letting his hearts race ahead of him like a dog chasing the wind was a sensation he thought he'd never let go of until he lost them. He felt traitorous for even considering it, as though he'd forgotten the name of a star in the sky. He knew all of them. Except one burnt out for a while. It had never been reserved for her, that one star. All the same, without her it just didn't have the fire it needed. »

Readers’ Choice Special MasterPost

To celebrate a milestone I drew up this nutty idea of having my darling readers shape a fic. I wanted to know what YOU ALL wanted to read! Ten randomly selected winners got the chance to shape this special fic! Below is the resulting fic, a work in progress.

Through the Curtain of the Void
Rating: Adult overall, some chapters NSFW
Characters: Rose Tyler, Tentoo, Tenth Doctor, Bad Wolf, the baby TARDIS, the TARDIS
Summary:  The Bad Wolf entity threatens to collapse two universes when she not only crosses through the Void but separates the Doctor from his TARDIS.
A/N: This fic starts out angsty in the first couple chapters. There might be a few more angsty moments as we go along. Content concerns are addressed here, and contain major spoilers.

Through the Curtain of the Void | Part 2/?

Rating: Adult/NSFW
Characters: Rose Tyler, Tentoo, Bad Wolf, baby TARDIS, Tenth Doctor (other chapters)
Summary:  The Bad Wolf entity threatens to collapse two universes when she not only crosses through the Void but separates the Doctor from his TARDIS.
A/N: This fic is for the Readers’ Choice Special. Reader selections can be found here. More than likely this fic will be 5 chapters or less. I’ve got it all plotted out, but I’m still uncertain about flow. I’d like to thank everyone who entered, and the ten who made their excellent selections!
There’s more angst in this chapter. And slightly NSFW.

Chapter One

They left the bedroom window open for one another when they were apart. It was Rose's idea, of course. No matter where they were in the world, her window would always remain open to him, and his to her. It never closed, not until they were together and safe. Of course it was foolish in the winter, particularly if it snowed. The Doctor urged Rose to close the window if it the weather wasn't for it. But she'd hear none of it. He thought she was being foolhardy until one night, on a clear night, he looked up at the starry sky and swore his other half was looking at that same bit of sky on the other side. He could never explain those little moments to Rose. He just knew. He felt his eyes on him for a moment, a brief moment. It crept up the nape of his neck and made its hairs stand on end. Rose returned home from a Torchwood assignment with a cast on her leg that night. Only then did the Doctor understand. It became a necessary comfort, having that window open. Sometimes snow and rain came in. Those nights they left the window open only a crack. But it was still open as long as one half of them was still on the other side.

They lived in a cottage next to a farm outside the city where Rose wouldn't be hounded by the paparazzi and journalists. The Doctor admittedly hated the peace and quiet at first. He certainly didn't appreciate perfume of eu du sheep that hovered around the house. But the first few months in the Tyler mansion upon his arrival was a good reminder to be tolerant. Rose didn't buy the house for him, mind. Well, that's what she told him. Every day she reminded him they weren't doing domestic, that this was just the best way for them to be together. And every day the Doctor spent at least a moment telling Rose it didn't matter. None of it mattered. He would live in a beaten down shanty as long as she shared it with him, shared a life with him.

Oh my goodness this fic. Wondering what it is about this fic that completely consumes me has been bugging me the past couple days. And I think I finally got it. It could be the intricate web weaving it all together. Well, maybe not that intricate. It could just be all of the variables.

Have you ever stood in a circle with a large group of people and tossed a ball of yarn around to make a web? Everyone holds an end of the web, so everyone’s holding it up. I feel like I’m in the middle, the one holding the ball of yarn, connecting every end. I suppose when the story is complete the web will be complete. And I’m hoping it’ll be a pretty one.

That, friends, is the Readers’ Choice fic. That’s Through the Curtain of the Void.

Two of a Kind

This is part of a series of thank you drabbles for everyone who entered the readers’ choice special. This one is for julibellule, who I’m hoping will enjoy some Nine x Rose romance/fluff. : )

This trip was special, he’d told her. It wasn’t as though the Doctor never took Rose anywhere special. But she couldn’t remember the last time he grinned quite as wide while telling her that this was a special day. His smile spread like the first ray of morning light warming her face. She always had to smile back. And last night they’d both exchanged their fair share of smiles. She could still feel his hand securing her back as he dipped her, could still hear him laughing with her, and feel her heart pounding out a samba as he twirled her right into his arms. It had only been a few hours since he took her breath away as he brought her in close, pressing her body to his. Just imagining what could possibly be more special than that little moment had her bouncing in the jump seat.

Spelunking wasn’t Rose’s idea of special. Not at first, at least. She followed the Doctor through some tight spaces, but at least the view was nice. He didn’t tease her when she screamed after seeing a giant cave spider crawling past her face. In fact, the Doctor had been uncharacteristically silent the entire trip, where she expected him to be giving her a tour of the caves they were exploring. Instead he helped thicken the hollow, dank air with his anxious silence. Wherever he was leading her must have been different. She’d never seen him that way. Silent, yes. But antsy, and constantly keeping her on her toes by looking back at her with a sheepish smile every few minutes? That was new.

He brought her to an underground lake that sparkled like an open night sky with a colony of bioluminescent fish. Rose was treated to a rainbow of glowing lights as far as she could see. She grinned and stole the Doctor’s hand to hold as she cooed appreciation for the delight before her. She already felt the trek, her damp clothes, and sore feet were worth it.

“This lake spans hundreds of miles under the planet’s surface,” the Doctor came up behind Rose and whispered in her ear, gesturing out at the glowing horizon. “These fish here - nearly a billion of them - roam the lake for hundreds of years. You see all those different colors out there? Each one has a slightly different scale pattern. This is a species that mates for life. And these fish, Rose, most of them will spend hundreds of years looking for another one that comes close to matching theirs. Most of them never find one. But every now and again one gets really lucky.”

The Doctor wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on her shoulder. Rose closed her eyes and basked in his hearts massaging her shoulder blades with their quick beats. She didn’t need to be a fish to feel like the most special girl in the universe.

We’re Ready

This is part of a series of thank you drabbles for everyone who entered the readers’ choice special. Next we have ktrosesworld, who requested a drabble with a DT character that I haven’t written yet. Good excuse to try out Peter Carlisle : )

“He's back. Micks, c'mere, he's back!” Jake flailed his arm at Mickey and gestured at the security monitor in front of him.

“Who?” Mickey glared, making quick strides across the room to scowl at the man standing in the lobby of Canary Wharf. “Not possible. Could be – ”

“Come on!” Jake grinned, peering down at the monitor with a sort of – what he felt was – misplaced admiration. “That's impressive! You gotta admit that.”

Mickey rolled his eyes. “You're just sayin' that 'cause he looks like the Doctor.”

“He brought flowers,” Jake pointed out with a grin.

Mickey snorted. “Cheap move, that is.”

“He's trying. I thought you'd be happy for them. Think he fancies her.”

Mickey twirled on his feet and leaned up against the metal desk, sighing at the sea of wooden crates headed to the basement. They were bolted shut, not for security reasons – they had plenty of that. They were to keep one person out. Mickey huffed and frowned.

“More than fancies. Flat out told me yesterday. That was before the drinks,” Mickey confessed.

“You make it sound like a bad thing.”

“I don't want her heart getting broken again, alright?” Mickey clenched his fists and roared at Jake.

“I won't break her heart. I promise.”

Peter filed in with his bouquet of flowers hidden behind his back, peering around the room for any sight of the object of his affection. She had her own floor, upstairs. So he wouldn't find her. But he looked all the same, wearing his heart on his eyelashes. There was no mistaking he had eyes for her. Mickey believed that much. He couldn't doubt what the man felt for Rose.

“Who let you up?!” Mickey scowled and began to march across the floor.

“I did.”

Jake and Mickey turned to see Pete standing on the other side of the floor. Mickey guessed he came down from his own office. He stood resolute and tall, as he always did when he was making it abundantly clear that his decision wasn't reversable.

“I just want one more chance,” Peter continued, walking up to Mickey. “I can... I can deal with looking like this 'Doctor' fellow. What I can't deal with is only having that one case together. I need more, more of Rose's smile. I haven't been... I've been in a dark place. But seeing Rose happy? Just for a few moments. It gave me life. I know what it's like to have a broken heart.” He gestured all around him. “I don't care about all... this. You can keep it. I just want to see her. I'm in love with Rose.”

When Peter paused, Mickey looked behind him and smiled. It was hard not to. “You should turn around, mate.”

And the moment he did, Rose flew into his arms, nearly sending Peter stumbling to the floor. “I thought I'd never see you again,” she whimpered into his chest.

“I thought... you might not want to because of... of him.”

“I miss him. I'm going to miss him. But you... for a little while it was okay,” Rose sniffed. Tears had already been streaking her cheeks as she ran up to him. Now she was a bit of a mess, silly thing. “I didn't think I would... but it was over and I missed you!”

Mickey had a difficult time tearing his eyes away from their kiss. He really wanted to. Seeing a man snog her with all the passion that Rose deserved wasn't easy. Hearing him take her breath away made his stomach flip. But he understood then, finally, why Pete was so sure that Rose was ready to pack up the dimension cannon. It had been a whole year since they learned it wouldn't work, a whole year of waiting for Rose to be ready to say goodbye. Seeing her eyes glisten as they looked up at Peter, just for him, Mickey finally understood. Not only was she ready to move on. Rose was ready to thrive.

Chapter Two

The Doctor was yanked out of sleep by a stabbing ache threatening to tear his skull asunder. He fell out of bed onto his knees and held in his stomach. It wasn't enough to keep its contents in place. He rushed to the ensuite, bumping his already throbbing head as his belly lurched. His stomach cramped up and his throat burned by the time he flopped over onto his back, staring up at the soft amber domed ceiling. There was a light aura framing the roundels, at least the ones he could see clearly. A migraine. A migraine the likes of which he hadn't felt in centuries. At first he suppressed the thought of why now, because at least he was feeling something.

He did eventually surrender to the pain and dragged himself to the infirmary. He took at least one too many of the little green painkillers made for his species. But they helped him crash onto the gurney to seek out a few more hours of sleep that he didn't need. He'd never slept so much in his life as he did in the past few years. Yes, it did help. Maybe the TARDIS didn't agree with this assessment. And for a minute or two, the Doctor considered the notion that it was her giving him a migraine just to get him onto his feet so they could go somewhere. She got anxious after a while, probably on his behalf. She did yearn to warm her engines, sure. But she was just fine sitting for a while, whether she liked it or not.

All We Need

This is part of a series of thank you drabbles for everyone who entered the Readers’ Choice Special. This next one is for atimelordswife, who didn’t request anything. But I’m hoping she’ll like the song that inspired this drabble.

“I’ve got you, Rose,” became the Doctor’s mantra as he flew down every flight of stairs in Canary Wharf. “You’ll be alright,” he would occasionally add. He tripped and fell on his trembling legs more than once. Any sprains and bruises would be worth it. Rassilon help him, he’d give up both legs if it would somehow allow him to move just a bit faster. It was a completely irrational notion. He could fly the TARDIS the second after he disappeared from that sterile room where she lay lifeless. It wasn’t the time for rational thinking. Rational thinking was dependent on the love of his life not stubbornly throwing herself into danger’s arms - or in this case the Void.

I've been alone Surrounded by darkness I've seen how heartless The world can be
I've seen you crying You felt like it's hopeless I'll always do my best To make you see

He flew open the TARDIS doors, and silently thanked her for not reprimanding him for his brashness. Adrenaline ripped through his nerves and sliced right through any ability to properly move his hands where he wanted them. The part of him dizzy with shock wanted to fall back onto the jump seat. He could do this. This one time it was crucial to get the timing right. His stomach was already somersaulting in his gut just for leaving her upstairs, despite knowing there was no other way.

The TARDIS gave him a mild shock, making him fall back. Her doors slammed shut and the engines came to life in a thunderous roar. She could do this herself, she was telling him. She knew he wasn’t useless. She always trusted him. But in that moment she knew he needed that extra hand. He needed someone who could pilot the TARDIS in any state. Who better, she must have thought.

I still have trouble I trip and stumble Trying to make sense of things sometimes
I look for reasons But I don't need 'em All I need is to look in your eyes And I realize

He stumbled out of the TARDIS much in the same fashion he went in. But she was there, in the same unconscious state he left her in. But the TARDIS’s timing had been perfect. Just as her doors closed, the ones to the stairwell slammed shut. Only a few seconds. He bit back the stabbing pain in his calf as he hoisted Rose up into his arms. He wasn’t equipped to carry her. But he only needed a few feet. He had her, alive. His wrist was most likely strained if not broken. But for Rose he would manage. He carried her inside. The TARDIS had the infirmary moved right inside the doors, and again he silently blessed his beloved ship.

Just a fall, the Doctor told himself. It was just a fall. She didn’t touch the Void. It would have sucked her right in, even if only an inch-sized hole remained in the wall. “You’ll be alright,” he repeated to her as he set her on a gurney. “I’ve got you, Rose.” Other than these little reassurances he worked in silence. The TARDIS picked up on her idle engine’s humming after she landed them safely in the Vortex to compensate for the deafening silence. It couldn’t replace the sweet melody of Rose’s voice. Knowing she was silent spurred him on further. After he’d done all that he could for her, he crawled into bed with her, careful not to put any weight on her injured limbs as he nestled up to her. If she was awake she’d say he was being ridiculous, that she’d be just fine. With this in mind he hummed idly to keep his mind calm, and just a bit brighter.

“Baby, I'm not alone 'Cause you're here with me And nothing's ever gonna take us down 'Cause nothing can keep me from - ”

“Doctor, don’t stop, ‘s nice,” a voice slurred into his shoulder.

He’d already burst into tears, which was what kept him from continuing. Hearing her voice threw him into a sob that couldn’t be quelled with her reassurance that she was fine. She didn’t feel fine, but she told him so all the same, same as she always did when she worried about him. She worried about him

“Sing to me? ‘s a nice distraction,” she mumbled and winced.

He could never, ever say no to this. Not to Rose, no matter how bullheaded she’d been. Maybe he’d never say no to her, certainly not after today. But not especially when her voice fluttered in his chest and his senses were flooded with her soft, warm presence. The walls were closed. He didn’t think about the number of ways he could still lose her. With her heart beating against his chest, feeling her so close, he felt like he could conquer the universe.

“ 'Cause nothing can keep me from lovin' you And you know it's true It don't matter what'll come to be Our love is all we need to make it through ”

“Oh, I know that one. We watched...” she whispered, and trailed off when he kept going. She croaked, hiccuped and kissed his neck. It evidently took her a moment to truly absorb what he’d said - that he wasn’t just singing. He felt hot tears sprinkling his neck as he finished. She tried to sing along. Though it came out as stuttered blubbering, her intent set his hearts ablaze. He knew, just as she did, that every word spoken or felt was sung because it was the truth. And the truth in turn had their hearts singing.

“ Oh, 'cause you're here with me And nothing's ever gonna bring us down Cause nothing, nothing, nothing Can keep me from lovin' you And you know it's true It don't matter what'll come to be You know our love is all we need Our love is all we need To make it through ”
