“Two female Arctic wolves nursing pups together” [x]
EDIT: Some sidenotes to this, because it seems like some information in the video is incorrect, and some bits sound a bit anthropomorphizing. It’s a shame I didn’t have time earlier to add this, seeing the amount of notes it already has.
The video says “Having two females nurse the same pups is exceedingly rare.” Then “A deep and meaningful bond runs between Snow White and Black Spot. Why else would they share life’s special gift?”
Among gray wolves (Canis lupus), it’s not uncommon for other female wolves in a pack to enter phantom pregnancy to be able to lactate in order to help the mother nurse. Arctic wolves (Canis lupus arctos) being a subspecie of the gray wolf, I don’t see how this case is considered rare.
Other females helping the mother nurse ultimately increases the pups survival chances - you don’t need a deep and meaningful bond between female wolves to make that happen.
Both the video and the source where I found this video state “As a behaviour it’s very rare and is the first time is ever been filmed before!”. I know this behavior is often observed in captivity, though I don’t know how common this is in the wild. Perhaps they meant that it is the first time that this behavior is being filmed in the wild, I don’t know. Either way, this still is a video too adorable for words.
All aboard the snooze train.
