Red Nose Day director Emma Freud: The first Doctor I got in touch with was David Tennant, as he’s an honorary trustee of Comic Relief; an amazing ally, and has made more money for our projects that almost anyone else in the UK. He instantly said yes. Next I asked Matt Smith because he’d foolishly given me his phone number when Richard [Curtis, Emma’s partner and Comic Relief co-founder] and I worked with him on Vincent and the Doctor [the 2010 Eleventh Doctor episode which Richard wrote and Emma script-edited]. When he agreed, I asked Peter Capaldi who said yes within seconds, and after that everybody else agreed as well.”

Winner Tony Barrett: The Doctors were all such nice guys and easy to talk to. There was lots of friendly banter between them. Matt teased David that he was an online favourite to play the next older incarnation of Prince Philip in [Netflix Drama] The Crown. David just laughed. My brother mentioned to Sylvester and Colin that we’d watched The Five-ish Doctors again the night before. To his delight, Sylvester dropped ‘I was in the Hobbit, you know’ into conversation. I also talked to Peter and David about The Five-ish Doctors. I told Peter he should write more comedy. David agreed!

If we ever get a first female Doctor what would she need to be?

Matt: She’d need to talk quickly, always appear cleverer than they are and always be funny! And sexy actually if you’re going to be the first female doctor I think she’s got to be pretty sexy.
