The Christmas Invasion - Behind the Scenes [Part 18]
Excerpt from Benjamin Cook’s articles in Doctor Who Magazine #365
Russell T Davies chose the name ‘Sycorax’ because - and pay attention here fact fans - that’s the name of Caliban’s mother in The Tempest, and she was a witch. “There’s something a bit witchy about the Sycorax,” he explains. “They talk of curses, and the Doctor compares them to voodoo. And I loved it years ago when, in classic Doctor Who, they used the word ‘Mandragora’ as an enemy, because that, as a plant, crops up in Anthony and Cleopatra, which I did for A Level, and it always cheered up a dull lesson to see the name of a Doctor Who enemy in the set text. I wanted to do the same with Sycorax. One day, maybe soon, there’ll be some kids watching The Tempest and thinking of The Christmas Invasion! It then turned out that Sycorax is one of the moons of, erm, something… Saturn, one of those. But I didn’t know that til afterwards…
“Oh,” he chuckles, “I just went and looked it up - and it’s Uranus! People are going to think it’s a gay joke. God help us all.”
Look at these people. These human beings. Consider their potential.
“There was something I had to tell you, something important.”

“Where are we gonna go first?” Rose asks quietly. She steps closer and brushes his sleeve, and her other hand is warm and soft in his.
He looks to the sky, leans closer to her and points. “That way- no… that way.”
The regeneration gave him new energy, excitement courses through his veins and it feels like he could run a million miles a minute. He’d love it even more if Rose is running with him.
He looks at her, and sees the snow (no, the ash) falling to her hair. Her cheeks are as pink as her namesake, and her eyes are shining. There’s something different, but in a way it’s the same. She looks the same, feels the same, but he is convinced it’s all different. He’s got brand new eyes.
In a way, it’s like starting over. He’s certain that everything ends, it’s been proved time and time again and he’s lived through so many that he can hardly keep track.
After those ends, though, something else begins.
Their eyes meet, and his smile grows with the sight of hers.
He hopes they can make a new beginning, together.

[David discussing the sword fight:] “You have to learn it kind of like a dance,” considers David, “and then you can start acting the aggression.” […]
“I mean, in how many other dramas do you get to have fantastic speeches full of brilliant one-liners, and then do a sword fight? It’s like, ‘Thanks Russell! I’ll take that, cheers.’ It’s pretty cool.” […]
“I’d be mortified if we had to have stand-ins at this stage,” agrees David, “although it’s absolutely exhausting, cos it’s quite a long fight, and these broadswords are very, very heavy, so swinging them - all the swinging you have to do - gets quite tough after a while. Also, I did in the small of my back on the first day. I haven’t quite recovered from that, so that’s niggling away.”
[Sean, the Sycorax leader, discussing the swordfight with the Doctor whilst in character:] “A very worth opponent. Highly annoying, really, because he’s wearing pyjamas, and he’s a little snippet of a thing, and I’m rather butch, but he just knew all my moves!”
Thank you to everyone who shares set photos!
“Oh, that’s rude. That’s the sort of man I am now, am I? Rude. Rude and not ginger.”
“I’ll spare your life if you’ll take this champion’s command. Leave this planet, and never return. What do you say?”
