everyone please read this and share if you can.

Brazil is going through one of the worst climatic crisis ever seen.

i live in the southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul. we have been suffering from extreme, nonstop rainstorms for a week now. the rivers are flooding, reaching 4-6 meters above their natural level. people are being rescued by helicopters, neighborhoods are being evacuated. entire cities are slowly but surely becoming submerged in water. 60 people missing and counting. 32 deaths and counting.

and this is not new. last november also had a flood like this one. 50 dead, many material losses. it happened again this january, with thousands being left without power or water for days.

three catastrophical disasters within less than a year. three disasters only a few months apart.

this is not natural.

unsustainable agricultural practices and politics led to this. a complete disregard for nature led to this. greed led to this. always greed.

when it comes to the climate crisis, i cannot stress this enough: we need to act now if we still want to live. disasters like this are going to happen more often and they're going to be much, much worse. this flood is being considered the worst climatic catastrophe in the history of my state. i don't know how long it will take for another bigger one to happen and take its place. i just know it will be sooner than it should.

updated links are on the pinned post on my blog. in the meantime, pray for us.

I cannot stress enough the sheer GRAVITY of what’s going in on my state right now. In my hometown. Hundreds of towns underwater, over 1,5 million people displaced, a warlike scenario. Roads destructed, fallen bridges, towns isolated with access only by helicopter. 149 deaths and even more people disappeared. After the water level went down on some towns, all that was left was rubble, as if a bomb exploded on it. Shortage of water, food, supplies, everything. People that lost their entire houses, their jobs, sources of income. The main airport of the state will have to remain closed until September because it’s completely flooded and who knows how much damage there is underneath all that water. And so much more, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

It’s utter chaos going on here, and the world NEEDS TO KNOW. Climate change is real and there is no planet B.

Donate if that’s viable to you, but above all, please, please, spread awareness. Talk about it, this is the most important. Next time it can be your country, your state, your own town, and we need to stand together.

listen i'm not the most informed person but how do you explain the deafening silence about Ecuador on this app, not even trending no nothing, a kidnapped officer was forced to read out a statement in which he says "you declared a state of emergency, and we declare police, civilians, and soldiers to be the spoils of war.” silence as usual for the global south

I just realized of another validating fact for my yerba mate in Middle Earth headcanons and i'm gonna share it:

At least where i live, one of the most traditional ways of consuming mate ( regarding combinations with food) is having it with bizcochitos ( biscuits).

Lembas are elvish biscuits.

i'm now perfectly allowed to imagine that at least once before they parted ways and Boromir died, the Fellowship of the Ring had the Middle Earth version of mate con bizcochitos.

Please, can you spare some headcanons of the Fellowship and mate?

Sure! I would love to :)

This is going to get long, because i have a lot of ideas about this, but here i go:

First of all, i'm going to share the possible place i'm imagining for yerba mate in the cultures of Middle Earth

In real life, the plant was discovered by south american indigenous people ( in particular, the guarani tribe). Traditions about mate can variate from country to country, so for this i'm using what i know about mine.

From the start of colonial times the drink was associated with rural life. Iconografical traditions link it to gauchos, errant people of the time. Gauchos were social outcasts in the colonial system, often suspected, and their habits seen as barbaric. Often compared to american cowboys, they had a similar bad reputation attributing them a fame of being bandits.

In Middle Earth, Rangers are their closest equivalent. When we see Aragorn as Strider in The Prancing Poney, the negative reactions to his presence in Bree show his fame falling under a similar stereotype. The critics to the errant habits of rangers resemble the opinions on gauchos in colonial times. For so, i like to imagine mate exists as a drink associated with rangers.

How they adopted its consumption is another issue. I have two possible theories about that:

1- They just happen to know of the plant's existence and usefull propieties, as it happens with many other plants some of them know and other populations of men don't ( for example, aragorn knowing of athelas)

2 - They get it on the borders of some distant lands on their areas of patrolling.

I like second one better because that allows me to imagine a fictional indigenous population living somewhere in Middle Earth, inspired on the original discoverers of the plant.

I saw your LTR and mate post and I was curious: what is mate and how do you pronounce it? If it's okay to ask.

Hi! It's absolutely fine to ask and i'm glad you did :)

Mate ( MAH-teh, according to the most accurate phonetical i found) is an infusion obtained from the leaves of a plant named yerba mate. It's a very popular hot bebreage in south american countries and Viggo Mortensen has been spotted drinking it many times

Although there are ways of drinking it on a mug ( a tea made of yerba mate leaves we call mate cocido), the most common way of consumption is sharing it on rounds and have it like this:

In the pic you see Viggo pouring the hot water into the leaves. After that, you are supposed to drink it sucking from that straw-looking bombilla. The bombilla has a filter at the bottom that stops leaves from getting into your mouth with the drink.

It's hard for me to describe the flavor, because it's something so common in my everyday life that I never got myself to wonder " what does mate taste like?". It's bitter, but less than black coffee. Some people add sugar or edulcorants to the water, but the most prevalent tradition is to consume it without any sweeteners. The yerba mate leaves can be combined with other herbs, orange peel, or many other natural stuff for extra flavor.
