Quick Rant

I have been reading all day for an essay i have to finish for college. One of the topics i have been reading about is perceptions about poverty and the social and cultural implications of hate thowards poor people. I don't tend to talk about serious stuff here but i'm so heartbroken and overwheilmed that, just for once, i will do it at least as a way to vent my frustrations.

Please, be kind to poor people. The poor are not the creators of their own poverty, they are victims of inequality in a terribly cruel system.

Poor people are people. This seems redundant but oftent it is forgotten that they are human beings and they deserve to be treated as such

People affected by poverty are not monks living in isolation. They are part of society and they are people like everyone else, they are not inmune to the cultural influences of our consummerist societies. Cultural needs are a thing, in fact, all our needs are cultural constructs. Please, don't judge poor people for spending money on stuff outside of the " bassic necesities" pack. It is normal for a person, after all, to have a wider range of necesities. Having all kinds of diferent needs based on society and culture is a human trait. It is dehumanizing to state that the poor should cover only basical needs claming that the rest are only luxury " superficial" needs. Shaming them for wanting, wishing or buying stuff that is not considered basic in the societal standar implies that they only have rights to a limited existence that ends in their biological functions. That's not living, that just surviving. The kind of survival of an animal in the wild.

An existence dedicated only to eat, sleep, shit, piss and work (when jobs are avaliable) it is not the one of a human by the terms we usually define humanity.

Poor people are not animals, they deserve a human existence and that includes a lot more than the basics. Don't judge them using biologisistic standars to define their needs. They already know what they need, patronizing speech about what's " best for them" makes more harm than good. Poverty is not correlated to morality. The poor, like everyone else, can desire a life in societal terms of comfort and it is not inmoral for them to feel need to consume in a capitalist society. It's human behaviour, perfectly understandable because they are humans. Stop stripping them from their humanity in the name of a narrowed conception of morality.
