LOTR makes me happy. Book!Merry is my favorite character and while the movies did him dirty, I still <2 the movie version as well!

Hi all,

I've been trying to get this blog at least somewhat organized.

A quick note about the header. This is what Gimli shouts when he saves Eomer from the Orcs during the Battle of Helm's Deep. It's clearly based on Hebrew (as Dwarves were supposed to be based on Jews, for better or for worse) and so I wanted to tie it in as both my Jewish culture and my love of all things LOTR.

Here are the tags I mostly use and what they mean:

#lotr art = catch all for any fan art from Tolkien's world (mainly, LOTR itself, a some of the Hobbit, and, rarely, the Silm)

#lotr gifs = similarly catch all for LOTR or (less often) Hobbit gifs.

I try to reblog smaller posts if/when I can find them. I think gif makers and fan art makers are doing good work and I want to make space for them in this fandom/on my page anyway.

#a hobbit in minas tirith = is my very self indulgent 2020 pandemic-esque fanfic of a sort of modern? au of trans!merry and his queerplatonic partner roommate pippin living and going to school in minas tirith.

#merry and #meriadoc = any posts with significant Merry Brandybuck action. Could be fanart, meta, writing...he doesn't come up a ton and he is my favorite character, especially the book version of him.

#lotr memes = self explanatory

#lotr books = anything that primarily engages with the book version of lotr (or hobbit) rather than the peter jackson movies

#birbs = art, photos etc. of birds...

#kitty katty = posts of cats, art, photos, memes, etc.

#anismals = all other animals

#jewish stuff = (mostly) positive Jewish things. i try to keep doomscrolling/posting to a minimum but sometimes i think a psa is in order...

#lgbtq = catch all queer tag for all things queer and trans etc.

#transsexual on main = when there is explicit mention of transsexuality (my favorite!)

#XD = things i think are funny/might cheer me up later

#hope = positive, affirming things

#good news = current events or general news that is positive/encouraging

#psa = something i think is important to know, often solidarity with other minority groups

Ok I think those are the main ones...

I am going to try to put image descriptions especially for things tagged lotr art. I will be using the tag #described lotr image for that purpose.

They actually make physical media for a much larger percentage of movies than they ever did in the past. Often with a lot more care than any small release was treated in the early dvd days. Its just if you only watch streaming stuff or the big new recent box office hits you won't see that. It is so ridiculously easy to get physical media for movies that even 5 years ago you couldn't even find. Like yes Netflix is a stingy bastard but so many things are available on disc WITH special features than ever before

And here is where you can get them! (mostly American)

And specific labels:

And many of these have sales several times a year so if you're patient you don't need to buy full price for any of it.

For operas, ballets and theatre:

Final result: the majority of voters have NEVER HEARD OF this film. Only one person has seen it.

This film is about a transwoman who returns to her hometown, hoping to become a police officer to set an example for her community. Prolific Malayam language actor Jayasurya, who plays the lead, described it as the most difficult role he's ever done but felt it was important to bring respect and dignity to the trans community.

It is currently available on YouTube.

I love desire paths. There's something so wonderous about seeing an echo of humanity. Depending on it's location, a desire path can mean so many different things.

In a city, like the pic above, they represent rebellion, and efficiency. The messiness of humanity. We like to imagine we're oh so logical and neat so we design our cities to be logical and neat an then real humans literally trample on that idea. The ego required to think you can design something perfect that checks every box. Life is all about compromise and patching stuff when some new problem arises. Though people have certainly tried! Ohio state univeristy let students carve their desire paths, and then paved them over. It looks pretty artsy.

Some people will try to discourage desire paths, but this is almost always going to fail.

Eventually, people just have to accept them. Humans are too dang stubborn.

Certain desire paths are just adorable. A 0.5 second time saver. You just can't design for maximum efficiency, humans will always find shortcuts!

Though on occasion a desire path can actually be the least efficient way...especially if you're superstitious.

In a wilder area, such as below, they show us the curiosity of humans. A desire path somewhere natural often tells you there's something interesting just ahead. (Though remember some ecosystems are fragile and will suffer if trampled! Stick to paths in these sorts of areas)

And how about desire stairs? I always think these look so cool. We get see humans determination to climb, to traverse every kind of terrain.

And for something really crazy...a desire path used for centuries will create a 'holloway'

All of these pics are off the Desirepath subreddit, check them out for more examples! And many thanks to the users who submitted these photos.

Had this beautiful (and at the time, VERY skinny) girl follow me home for 3 blocks and then live in our backyard for a week while I tried to find her owner. Well now, she is an indoor kitty we are calling Autumn and my son LOVES to tuck her in whenever he finds her being sleepy! (There's still good in the world)

Welcome to your new and wonderfully cozy home, Autumn! May you never again know cold or hunger
