Honestly I don't see Diavolo as a dateable either

When they first announced the side characters becoming dateables I was so visibly excited about Diavolo being dateable that I got a couple asks about whether this meant I'd be ditching Mammon

But I don't like the way they executed it?

They kinda just sprang it at the end of s2 with 0 build up?

I mean Solomon's being showing interest in MC since S1 (though I don't really interpret that as romantic interest) that it's believable when he starts liking them?

But even mid way through S2 Diavolo had no real interest in MC other than the 'they're human gotta keep 'em safe to make sure my millenia old dream suceeds' and 'if they die lucifer is going to be big sad' kind

Okay maybe my bitterness at the execution is making me exagerate. I'm sure he cared about MC as a person and/or a friend in S2 but it's never enough to justify the sudden romantic twist at the end of s2

The focus when it came to Diavolo or Lucifer in S2 was all about their relationship with each other and MC acting as the therapist. To the point that:

a.) Lucifer (with amnesia) asked MC what he was doing talking about other men (Diavolo) the last time they were together in a romantic spot (the top of a ferris wheel)

b.) MC's gonna fucking explode and take all three worlds with them and Diavolo refuses to tell the brothers till the very end because:

I mean look, you can't suddenly claim he's in love with MC when a few lessons ago he was willing to keep the fact that MC was a ticking time bomb from people who could have helped just because he wanted to not upset Lucifer for as long as possible

Also not Diavolo fighting for his life trying to deflect Simeon's questions and Simeon basically going

Even now each time Diavolo says something romantic to MC it's like getting hit in the face because it feels like it came outta nowhere

Just realised

Diavolo doesn't even particularly like apples but he still planted a whole fucking apple orchard in his backyard because Lucifer does

In og OM! S1 & S2, Simeon didn't even believe such a thing was possible, nor did he like or trust Diavolo.

It's amazing to see how Diavolo's beliefs and dreams have actually changed people.

Years after he made Lucifer start believing in peace despite everything in the Celestial Realm telling him it's not possible, he inspired that same change in Simeon

Diavolo planted apple trees because he wanted to share Devildom apples with (angel) Lucifer

Lucifer's favourite snack is a type of Devildom apple

Love it when characters casually reveal some insane childhood trauma with a nostalgic smile on their face because this is just a normal part of their childhood how fun! to the absolute horror of those around them who are very much in the 'that's not normal what the actual fuck' boat

Okay but here's what makes me tear up:

This conversation happens in a devilgram where Diavolo is picking apples for Barbatos to make an apple pie for him and it cuts to a flashback that shows Diavolo wanted an apple tree to impress his new angel friend and excitedly tells this to Barbatos. Barbatos then helps Diavolo plant an apple tree in the forest

Isn't that rattling your brain!!!? Aren't you foaming at the mouth!?!?!

The Demon King enchanted this forest to be full of things that could hurt and kill his child, all in the name of preparing Diavolo to be a better king

Then Barbatos helps Diavolo plant apple trees in it, because Diavolo wants to share it with their enemy, a gesture of friendship and good will that would eventually bring peace to the three worlds* which in turn helps Diavolo grow towards becoming a better king

Diavolo's father created a deadly survival course for a child so he wouldn't get bored, something that would keep Diavolo away from him, and the man who actually raised Diavolo spent time with Diavolo helping him grow apple trees in it

A labour of love grown and tended to for years, if not centuries, just so Diavolo could give his friend apples (another gesture of love) built upon the soil of something that was meant to push and punish Diavolo into being the ideal ruler

*(over a series of meetings Diavolo & Lucifer become friends -> Lucifer starts questioning things in the Celestial Realm -> Lucifer, pushed by the sentence against Lilith, starts a war in the Celestial Realm -> Lucifer seeks sanctuary in the Devildom -> Diavolo helps Lucifer + reincarnates Lilith -> Lucifer pledges his loyalty to Diavolo + through Lilith's line MC is eventually born -> through MC & the brothers' fates being tied Lucifer accidentally picks MC for the exchange program -> MC showing that people from all three worlds could not only be close friends but family starts mending bridges + MC wanting to stay in the Devildom permanently gets everyone actively pushing for peace leading to them becoming part of the student council/government and challenging the views of the older/more conservative demons -> all this eventually kickstarts both Diavolo & Lucifer's character & relationship development -> Diavolo learns to be a more considerate ruler & person who listens to others instead of immediately jumping in with his own plans & ideas + Lucifer learns to actually push back against Diavolo & not just be his 'Yes Man')

Also this Devilgram is called "The Seven Apples"

and with lines like,

"Still...I hope that all this effort bears fruit, someday"

"With enough care and attention, I'm certain that it shall."

"Ah, well. Good things come to those who wait, and all that."

And talk about the future of the Devildom and how they pick exactly seven apples, the whole tree talk/metaphor is 100% about gaining the friendship & trust of Lucifer and his brothers by putting in the effort, care and attention to one day, years in the future, have seven shining apples with you

BUT, EVEN WITHOUT THAT DOUBLE MEANING,

It's not just a tree.

It's all about love, isn't it and the things we do for the people we love.

He's such a good step-dad...

So.......so he made him breakfast in bed??????

This isn't a prank??? This is just husband behaviour?

Not Diavolo asking a demoted angel and a literal child to stand witness instead of the Celestial Realm's official representative😭😭😭😭😭😭

While Diavolo's feelings are very obvious, Lucifer's can be read either way. But there are things he only allows Diavolo and MC, or sometimes even just Diavolo to do.

• Diavolo's one of the only people he allows to see him shirtless. If you're not following Lucifer's "route" (aka if your MC is not actively sleeping with Lucifer) then Diavolo's truly the only person

• He's a sucker for Diavolo's puppy dog eyes and quickly gives in to what Diavolo wants. This parallels Mammon giving into MC (where it's obvious that Mammon's in love with MC) and Solomon giving into Asmo (where it's heavily implied they've slept together)

• Speaking of which, in S2 when Lucifer and Mammon are fighting Simeon uses MC against Mammon and Diavolo against Lucifer to get them to stop

• There's a part (in a devilgram?) where MC and Lucifer hear Mammon screaming. If MC says it sounds like Diavolo, Lucifer says that Diavolo's screams don't sound that bad.....which....SIR, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN!!!?

• He blushes whenever Diavolo praises him and actually turns his head away and closes his eyes, and he once tells Diavolo he shouldn't speak about him like that in public - so....so it's fine privately???

• He lets Diavolo pull him into dumb, humiliating things that he wouldn't let anyone else make him do - letting Diavolo give him a piggyback ride around RAD

• He gets upset when Diavolo is sad and (taking MC's suggestion) blushes and meows to please him.... which again is an absolutely insane thing to do

• Just the whole of S2. Where he follows MC around like a sad puppy complaining about how Diavolo is keeping secrets from him and he's never kept secrets from him before and MC what should I do. He goes on a romantic ferriswheel ride with MC and all he can talk about is how much he cares about Diavolo, which amnesiac Lucifer later points out is a bit eyebrow raising. He finds out Diavolo left a party earlier without talking to him to go talk to Solomon and literally goes -> 😔

• The entirety of the "Lucifer's Melancholy" devilgram where Lucifer gets jealous that Diavolo praises Barbatos's cookies, so he tries to make cookies for Diavolo and just fails so badly? And then manages to convince himself that since Diavolo only praised Barbatos's cookies that means he likes everything else about Lucifer. There's also a more recent event where it's implied that Lucifer kept practicing making cookies

• That one Devilgram where Lucifer seems annoyed that Diavolo was meeting up with Mephisto for dinner

• He has regular dinner dates with Diavolo

• He's the only one who finds Diavolo's lame dad jokes hilarious

• The entire Devildom genuinely thinks Lucifer is in love with Diavolo????

• One day with Diavolo was enough for Lucifer to become reluctantly fond of him and start questioning his father and the Celestial Realm

• On the first day they met, Lucifer - in the most roundabout way - thought Diavolo was angelic

• His relationship with Diavolo actually has development throughout S1 and S2. Where it goes from Lucifer caring about Diavolo but being unable to truly be his friend due to Diavolo's position and Lucifer's previous trauma saying that they'll be kicked out the second they step out of line to Lucifer caring about Diavolo but feeling secure enough to yell at Diavolo, go against him, be snarky at him, actually punish him the way he does MC and his brothers and, most importantly, let his brothers become friends with and play around with Diavolo

However, whenever anyone (Simeon, MC, Barbatos, Asmo & Beel) refers to him and Diavolo being in love with each other, he denies it vehemently. But, it's obvious that Diavolo at least has some feelings, so it makes Lucifer's obliviousness seem deliberate? Which makes his denial seem too strong? And then it just gives a more composed version of Mammon denying liking MC vibes

Even with all of this I say Lucifer's feelings are up to interpretation because compared to everything Diavolo does there's barely any evidence

Also Lucifer's one of the "more obviously in love with MC" brothers - he and Mammon are the only ones who had MC as their greatest desire in Thirteen's cave. So however the players decide to interpret that relationship will also factor in.

The difference between this Diavolo and present day Diavolo is killing me it's so good

Also present day Diavolo had Barbatos and Lucifer's support while this Diavolo doesn't even seem sure if he has 100% of Barbatos's and god it must suck being him, to be suddenly thrust into a position of power, where he has to perfectly balance everything to stop an all out war breaking out, all while the only thing he truly wants is his father's approval

I'm so proud of how much he's grown by the time we reach S1

Me, knowing full well the brothers & mc are an actual family, whenever someone treats them like they're a family:

Love that MC answered all the questions Diavolo asked truthfully while telling him absolutely nothing about the actual truth, because he'd have been able to tell if they lied

LOVE how much Diavolo is struggling and what a huge contrast he is to present day Diavolo, specially in terms of confidence

LOVE that we are finding out about the politics of the Devildom. The way the House of Lords took the first opportunity they could to try and oust Diavolo was 🤌 it says so much

Love how Mephisto was portrayed - how he mirrored the thoughts of the nobility, just everything he said and the way he said it showed so much about him and the way he views things. Even the way he instantly expected to be shown out by MC because as far as he knows they're a demon of a lower status than him. I'd put this into more words if my brain wasn't mush after getting only 2hrs of sleep

Love how Diavolo instantly shut Mephisto down when he started going too far. And how there was a visible change in the way he addressed Mephisto afterwards. That whole scene with Diavolo and Mephisto (and even later with Mephisto & MC) felt like it came from a period drama tv show rather than an otome game

So

(Keep in mind Obey Me!'s Devildom & Celestial Realm are not equivalent to Hell & Heaven despite sharing some characteristics, and it makes more sense to see them as two warring kingdoms rather than as heaven & hell)

In S2 they say the war between the angels and demons has been going on from the very beginning and no one's really sure why it started

Nightbringer says there was a whole line of Demon Kings before Diavolo and his father

Nightbringer implies that god created all the angels as they're all brothers and sisters even if they're not necessarily family

Nightbringer says that after the brothers rebelled and fled, the Celestial Realm labelled them War Criminals. The Demon King took them in and this nearly re-started the war between the Celestial Realm & Devildom. But the Demon King was able to smooth it all over. Soon after, he fell into a deep sleep.

Diavolo says, since he's not actually the Demon King yet, what he's doing is following his father's wishes or something similar to that

In S3, it says that Diavolo ended the war between the Celestial Realm & Devildom after his father went to sleep.

So let's assume that his Father had been going into these deep sleeps on and off for short periods of time and this last one (after everything had settled/calmed down a bit) was more permanent

When his father fell into that first sleep, Diavolo went ahead with their plan to call a truce and invited Lucifer over to talk about their plans for harmony.

In Glory Days, Lucifer is shocked that a demon wants harmony/balance/peace and wonders if such a thing was possible then why didn't his father reach for it

What I'm trying to say is:

The Demon King (Diavolo's father) wasn't there for the whole span of the war but still wanted to end it and wanted peace, and actively worked to achieve that

God was alive during the whole span of the war and probably is the only person who knows the cause of it but (as far as Lucifer knew) he never tried to achieve peace and was fine with letting things continue the way they were

And I think that's amazing
