There should be a fake dating fic where Steve is trying to be a good friend, helping Bucky learn little everyday things about the modern world. But because he doesn’t want to embarrass Bucky in public making it look like he’s treating him like a child explaining things to him or making decisions for him when there’s just too many food choices and Bucky has no idea where to start, he just finds it easier to say they’re boyfriends. That way all the leaning close and ordering food for him doesn’t seem so weird, or the putting his hands on him to let him know something’s not a threat or grabbing his hand to help him feel grounded when it all gets overwhelming.
And Steve is really gentlemanly about it. Because it hurts to someone you love hurt so much and it’s one of those things where all you want to do is be kind to them. And Bucky likes it. Maybe he’s not ready for a lot, but he likes being treated with this unfailing respect. (Which Steve partly learned from watching Bucky date people.) It’s just melting Bucky inside, because this is the man who addressed him by a name and spoke to him like a person for the first time in so long.
So he reads up about boyfriends and dating and things and gets ideas from movies and tv. And here he is, this legendary fear-inspiring super assassin, trying to maneuver Steve to do the most innocent things like kiss or him or come cuddle with him. It’s his new mission. He even thinks of it that way. But Steve doesn’t get it, and he wants Bucky but thinks it’d be selfish to go for it at this point, and that his job should be just to be there for him. So it’s like Steve’s staunch resolve to do the “right thing” vs Winter Bucky’s determination.
Until they’re out one evening, probably walking on a bridge or something, because it’s them. Bucky declares that this is the part of the date where Steve is supposed to kiss him, and stands there very imposing and implacable and ‘it’s my mission’, making clear that he is waiting and not moving. So Steve asks if he may kiss him, and it’s the most specialest kiss ever. And Steve probably cries.
