Did you notice how Steven didn’t seem a bit scared until he mentioned the gem fusion experiments? Peridot isn’t harmless, and Malachite is probably their most dangerous enemy ever. And still Steven seems like he’s genuinely unafraid to take them on if he needs to.

A Fusion Review

Okay so I know a lot of people have theories and understanding about the gems and their fusions, but I’ve been thinking a lot about the designs each one has. So far we have seen Opal, Garnet, Sugilite, Sardoyxn, Alexandrite, Malachite, Rainbow Quartz and Stevonnie. And it is obvious that fusion is a very personal thing. But in the process of considering the character design and how that relates to their fusion, I guess this is what I am finding:

I am starting with Stevonnie because they are currently the only fusion that we have seen without extra limbs/eyes. I do not believe that this is because of the fact that steven is part human, but instead has to do with the relationship they have. 

Malachite is on the opposite of this current spectrum with not only four eyes but five arms, four of which they are standing on. Its obvious that they aren’t compatible, even in the episode they made it clear, however understanding this is key as I continue. I think the reason for four legs was that consent was not fully given in this situation. Which can come down to the fact that they do not stand together. Keeping in mind that there is two people involved in fusion, the fact that one of them is literally using their arms to support the other makes this notice clear. 

Looking at Sugilite and Sardonyx, we see that they do have legs, however extra arms and eyes have also been added to the character design which leads me to believe that even though this relationship is consensual, They have a difficulty working together and seeing each others perspective. 

Alright so onto these two. So from their designs we can take that, it was consensual and that they can work together. They only have two arms so this means that in terms of their relationship that both parties involved in fusion are willing to work together and will work together. Though because both of them have their own sets on eyes basically, we can assume that they do not see things the way each other see’s them. We get this from both the Keystone Motel episode and most episodes involving pearl and rose. 

Now for Opal. They are the only other fusion besides Stevonnie to have only two eyes when they fuse. This is because they understand and see each other and themselves possibly in the same way while the four arms can indicate that they have have a difficult time working together, which is quite often seen in the show.

So overall we can say that:

legs indicates consent and willingness to stand together

arms indicates that they that work well together and will work together

and eyes means that they see each other/ feel the same way

(this is a sloppy post but you get the picture…)

Just something I noticed!! It tied in really well with matt’s comment that all fusions exist even when not formed, what with the parallel between the green and their fusion dace/the pushing/pulling aspect of malachite.

Speaking of Lapis/Pearl parallels, I’m almost willing to bet that Steven will find Malachite again and this particular exchange will happen:

Steven: You don’t have to do this for me!

Malachite/Lapis: But I want to!

Just like

Almost very willing to bet on this.

That is to say You’ll do it for him

the fusions so far

For the most part rainbow Quartz seemed like a pretty solid fusion with no extra limbs and all.

But what really caught my eye was her eyes. Rainbow Quartz has two sets of eyes witch is normal for a fusion but unlike sugilite or garnet when you look at the eyes you can tell who’s eyes are who. You could see both rose and pearls personalities in the eyes and you could see the eye color of each individual gem. The only other fusion that has had that issue is malachite.

I think this was because they each had opposite opinions on how they feel about Greg making it impossible to merge the two opinions. This is similar to what happened with garnet in “keeping it together” ruby and sapphire both had opposite opinions about the “cluster” causing their eyes to depict one or the other and have each of their personalities rather than just garnet. We never heard rainbow Quartz talk so we don’t know if she has her own voice and own personality quite yet, but As of this episode i don’t think that rainbow Quartz was a very stable fusion. It may be different other times they fuse and the Presence of Greg could’ve been what made this fusion the way it is now. Maybe she’s always like this or maybe it was just this instance.
