Why Mindful Education is my Favorite Steven Universe Episode
Steven Universe is often praised for diversity, but what keeps me watching is how healthy relationships are conveyed. I have been in a relationship for nearly 9 years, 3 of which I’ve been married. I’m in that type of marriage where I’m often told “I could never imagine you two fighting.”
A relationship like mine is usually conveyed as an ending point, the “happily ever after.” After a struggle of imbalance and conflict, we will eventually work out and ride off into the sunset. However, the crew of Steven Universe recognizes that that is bs.
Mindful Education gave us a peak into Garnet’s mind, the most stable relationship of all. We see that she herself sometimes struggles to exist. We see how Ruby’s one track mind and Sapphire’s anxiety cause distance in their relationship, how the thoughts fluttering through their minds are constantly telling them that they might lose each other. The only way they are able to gain control of their fusion is to accept their thoughts and move on.
Anyone who’s been in a long term relationship can tell you how easy it is to let your thoughts get out of control. It causes Connie to ignore Steven’s attempts to make her laugh, it causes Steven to self loathe. These are real problems that happen all the time and they cause a lot of stress on otherwise healthy relationships.
Watching this episode was one of those moments where I said to myself “FUCKING FINALLY.” Whenever I see relationship problems in anything, the go-to is usually cheating or the “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus” trope. Mainstream culture is rarely interested in the complexity and subtleties of long term relationships. I’m happy that a show exists that can beautifully portray all of that using butterflies, beautiful animation, a catchy song, all in 11 minutes.
