I had to see so many videos this week of white ppl having to explain on tiktok that they were celebrating Lunar New Year with their partners and their in laws. The fact that ppl have to explain the very concept of embracing the culture of someone they care about to y’all is fucking embarrassing.

Do you know what would’ve been worse than this? The white person not participating in their partner’s culture at all. That shit would’ve been 10x more disrespectful.

Y’all need to fucking step back and learn how to spot context clues because this shit is ridiculous.

It can’t be appropriation if you’re invited.

I have so many family members who aren’t white, it’d be wierd if they invited me to something culturally specific and I didn’t make an effort to go and participate surely? Like, they’ve invited you, you’re ALLOWED to participate.

and i’ve found that in many cases people are actually really pleased if you make an effort to learn.

The point where it becomes inappropriate is when you act like you know MORE than the people who’s culture it is and if you’re directly profiting from a culture that isn’t your own.

that’s when it becomes appropriation rather than appreciation and just straight up respect.

I will always look to members of a culture or community to say “this is okay/not okay” because ultimately, they’re gonna know better than me.

But yikes it’d be so rude not to celebrate something with your partner or family members! Who the fuck would do that???

I get the feeling there’s a great deal of these “white saviours” who actually want to keep things separate, like, that stuff is for THOSE people and that for THOSE. it makes me suspicious of their motives. Segregation does nothing good for society and refusal to participate in other cultures respectfully is extremely problematic and leads to more segregation.
