My apologies for the quality of of the first few images (I had to combine them to have room for everything…although I guess I could try playing around with my method).

Anyway, in addition to Katara kind of being a Book  1 Zuko in “The Southern Raiders,” the episode itself plays out like the “Avatar state” in regards to its main plotline concerning Aang and Katara. Furthermore, we get some neat Aang/Katara interactions which end up mirroring each other.

Both episode start out with someone offering a means to an end. General Fong offers to help Aang figure out how to get into the Avatar state, and Zuko tells Katara that he can help her find the man who killed her mother.

In “The Avatar State,” Katara tries to dissuade Aang from listening to Fong. In “The Southern Raiders,” Aang tries to keep Katara from following through with her plan to confront Yon Rha. In both cases, neither Aang nor Katara think the other understands why they have to go through with their actions.

Both see the other still plans to go through with their plans, but Katara and Aang react differently. Katara simply tells Aang that she won’t watch Aang go through with Fong’s plans because she doesn’t want to see Aang suffer any longer. Likewise, Aang sees that Katara still plans on going through her plan and says that she need to do this for herself if for no other reason than to find a sense of closure.

In the end, both Katara and Aang are consumed by rage in one way or another. Aang through his anger induced Avatar State and Katara through her rage of meeting her mother’s killer. Roku gets Aang out of the Avatar State, and Katara finds that she can’t kill Yon Rha and she doesn’t know exactly why–or, at least, not yet.

In TAS, Aang apologizes to Katara for not listening to her. In TSR, he assures Katara that she did the right thing. With TSR, we get the added benefit of Katara forgiving Zuko.

Okay can we talk about something that is so powerful but often over looked in ATLA?

So everyone knows in ‘The Guru’ how it is stated that the airbenders’ love for Aang was reborn in the form of new love (Katara). But it is often overlooked (because it’s not explicitly stated, but alluded to) how Katara’s mom’s love is reborn into new love (Aang).

Aang tells Zuko “if I go with you, will you promise to leave everyone alone” but in the Southern Raiders episode, Kya says “if I tell you, will you promise to leave the village” and I think it shows the correlation between Kya and Aang who were willing to put their life on the line for Katara. It is such a subtle detail that is often overlooked because of the nature of the Southern Raiders episode but I think it’s so powerful.

endless list of otps: Aang and Katara (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Can we talk about something? Sure. Do you remember when we were at the air temple and you found Monk Gyatso’s skeleton? It must have been so horrible and traumatic for you. I saw you get so upset that you weren’t even you anymore. I’m not saying the Avatar State doesn’t have incredible and helpful power, but you have to understand… for the people who love you, watching you be in that much rage and pain is really scary. I’m really glad you told me that. But I still need to do this. I don’t understand. No, you don’t. Every day, more and more people die. I’m already one hundred years late. Defeating the Fire Lord is the only way to stop this war. I have to try it. I can’t watch you do this to yourself. I’m not coming tomorrow. Goodnight. Goodnight

when katara said in the southern raiders that her mom was protecting the last water bender...

and then u think about how her and aang are paralleled as the last benders of their respective peoples; how then maybe they spent tear filled nights comforting each other because they both had to come to terms with that fact. But now they have each other, and together they rebuild their societies.

how together, they’re no longer the last water bender and the last airbender

BOOK 2: Ep 1, The Avatar State | Ep 11, The Desert

This. Right here. This is why their relationship is so important. Not because it rewards the hero for a job well done, but because she actually understands him, and loves him. She knows he’s passionate and righteous, but she knows who that his greatest strengths are also his greatest weaknesses. She is willing to sit with him in his discomfort. Even though she isn’t always rational herself, she can bring him back from the brink.

And what does he do for her? Well he taught her how to have fun again. How to find joy. His anger and pain hurts her because before him, those were pretty much the only feelings she knew. For him to lose the peace and light that he brought into her life is devastating to her. She knows how to cope with the grit by sitting through it, and he knows how to deal with it by getting away from it. And they both kind of help each other find the healthy balance in those two habits.

1) favorite theme from a series soundtrack

2) climax @ 0:30 is when katarra and aang finally kiss

3) feels ugh

i STILL get goosebumps when they FINALLY kiss. the three season buildup to this very moment + the music made for a really satisfying ending to arguably one of the best written shows of all time.

But honestly though?? The musical symbolism here.

EVERY single musical signature in this track has a purpose. The beginning is “*Safe Return,” which always comes up when a character (usually Aang) is talking about or having some sort of important moment regarding where they belong (first and most memorably when he was leaving the Southern Air Temple in episode 3), so to have it play HERE? Means the music is telling us that his home is with Katara.

Secondly, the Two Lovers song playing juuust before, and during the kiss. The episode happened so long ago… But you remember exactly where it came from, and it gives you just enough time to know exactly what’s about to happen. They’re still in love, like they were when they were trapped in that cave, but they’ve both come such a long way and they’ve grown enough and been through enough with each other to show their true feelings now. Parallels!

And of course, the four notes at the end making the Avatar theme. Only plays at integral parts of Aang’s journey. Showing that not only has the story ended with Aang saving the world, but when he and Katara’s story came to a conclusion. It’s just as significant to Aang’s personal growth and story as when he defeated Ozai.

Fucking A:TLA, man.

And we’re crying in this chili’s tonight
