even after the war, zuko is ridiculously good at finding aang. he knows aang’s favorite spots in the palace (the gardens of course, the inside is too dark and the vibes are dreadful). one day aang is supposed to be in for some important meeting, but nobody can find him. it takes zuko about five minutes to find aang chilling in a tree. he says fuck it and climbs the tree to hang out with aang.

zuko and aang have such a cute dynamic, especially in the firebending masters. they have such a "aloof big brother/quirky little brother" vibe and it just really warms my heart how their friendship develops and how they could've easily made them like, constantly disagree or something (esp w their opposing worldviews) but in the end they were just very in tune with each other, very there for each other. like how zuko lost his bending and aang still was nice and clapped at zuko's demonstration even after zuko lost his temper and was kind of an ass, because he was understanding of how frustrated he was. or how aang was the first to truly extend the olive branch to zuko ("do you think we could have been friends?") or how he was still among the first to forgive zuko in s3. or how zuko assigned aang "homework" when he was gone with sokka, or how, when aang opened up to him about his anxieties surrounding firebending zuko reassured him of his capabilities in his own very blunt, zuko way, or how zuko was so intense about aang's training because it was his own way of caring about aang, by preparing him for a confrontation with the scariest person in the world to him the only way he knew how. also just....their banter in the firebending masters, the antics and shenanigans, the way they bickered, the "give me some of your fire" scene.....i just love those doofuses so much!!!! its such a lovely and important relationship!!! you could give me a scene by scene compilation of every single interaction aang and zuko had and i could break down each of them to the nitty gritty detail because of how deeply i love their dynamic and how it developed into such a beautiful friendship in the end.

Zuko: And finally, allow me to introduce the Avatar, Aang.

Aang: Ambassador Aang.

Zuko: Ambassador of what? You’re the only member of your nation.

Aang: And whose great-grandpa’s fault is that?

Zuko: Touche, ambassador.

Aang: I changed my mind now I’m King Aang.

Zuko: What.

Aang: King of the Air Nomad.

Zuko: That doesn’t even make any- whatever. Let’s just proceed with the meeting.

Zuko: Wait, who’s the president then?

Aang: *lifts baby Tenzin*

Aang: Don’t forget Lord Momo of the Momo Dynasty.

Zuko: I am not calling him that.

Aang: You’re disrespecting his dynasty, Zuko.

Zuko: Since when does he have a dynasty?

Aang: Well, most of it is gone, now.

Zuko:

Aang: Because of your great grandfather.

Zuko through gritted teeth: Your Momoness.

i was re-watching the final agni-kai between zuko and azula and i noticed something

throughout the entire match, zuko and azula are throwing straightforward, linear attacks at one another

and they deflect with the same kind of movement

but then when zuko does his firespin breakdance thing, its in no way linear, its completely circular

up until that point, theyd been doing classical firebending movements, but this one isnt really seen in firebending. but it IS seen in airbending

point is, zuko was learning from aang at the same time aang was learning from zuko

I think it’s important to note that Aang’s initial reaction to discovering that Zuko was the man behind the mask, was to run away. He had to actively choose to save Zuko. And idk I’ve just been thinking non-stop about how some people actually think that wasn’t an active decision on his part and just him defaulting to thinking “this guy probs has good in him”.

In fact I think by assuming as much you miss the later lesson about how anyone and everyone is capable of being good or bad. That ultimately, being a good person is a choice and not an active state of being.

Also what I think is interesting is how Aang waits for Zuko to wake up. I imagine him sat there debating whether to leave or stay, these conflicting thoughts in his head. Zuko’s done terrible things that (at this point) can’t just be swept away by Aang, but then Zuko has saved him, even if Aang’s under no illusions why. He knows it’s for selfish reasons because he’s not stupid.

And then his question to Zuko isn’t why did you save me, it’s could we have been friends back then. Some people call Aang naïve, but I think this scene is what shows he’s not. He’s the complete opposite, in fact. Because he’s not so naïve to think that Zuko helping him makes them friends, and he’s not so naïve to think this means all he needs to do is pester Zuko a bit and he’ll become a better person. Much like him choosing to save Zuko, it’d have to be an independent choice on Zuko’s half for him to change, and Aang understands that this version of Zuko will not make that change. But at the same time, he also acknowledges that there could have been a chance if Zuko had been born in a different time, where they aren’t ‘natural enemies’.

It’s truly a realistic episode for Aang, where we see that Aang being a good person is a choice, and maybe it’s a bit a struggle too, considering he has to accept that saving Zuko means having Zuko chase him again - much like Zuko has to accept that saving Aang likely means setting Aang free so he can try and catch him again.

"the deep relationship between aang and zuko feels thrown out of left field to me in lok"

why is this the funniest and also the saddest take i've ever seen in my life lmfao. did they not watch atla and see how aang is the first to extend friendship to zuko, the first to truly accept him into the gaang, the first to forgive him for everything he'd done, the only person that zuko initiates a hug with besides mai (and possibly iroh), the only person zuko asks to have at his side as he's crowned fire lord, zuko's primary narrative foil, the one zuko shares dreams with, the one zuko shares the secret of firebending with, the only one besides mai and iroh that can get zuko to smile that™ smile - like hello?? they had one of the deepest relationships in atla alone lmao! i haven't even seen lok but the implication that their relationship only grows stronger over the years makes perfect sense to me

the firebending masters is zuko's best life-changing field trip and anyone who says otherwise is only fooling themselves

@the-gay-insomniac EXACTLY!! in his other field trips, while his presence is still important, zuko nonetheless plays a largely supporting role to sokka and katara (which makes sense, given the plots of those eps). the firebending masters, on the other hand, was an episode necessary for the growth of both aang AND zuko, which is why it's easily the best and most memorable of his life-changing field trips
