ELL/ESL Tutor here!
Over the years, I have learned what strategies and study methods work best for ELL/ESL students. In the beginning, I developed my lesson plans that I could use for multiple students. This strategy did not go according to plan. My students did not understand my method of teaching, and so I had to change something. Through trial and error, I now focus on the individualized education plan of each student. (my take on IEP)
In the post, I provided a worksheet sample of an ESL student who is focusing on translating words that are unfamiliar to them into Chinese characters. I read the sentence twice, and then the student would after. During their turn, they will underline phrases or words that they do not understand. For those chosen words or phrases, I would provide examples through verbal, non-verbal, written, and various forms of media imagery. After giving practical examples of the targeted word or phrase, they can use that information to translate the closest character meaning in their native language.
Before this method, I would go over my students’ English papers and ESL homework in which they did not score too well. After implementing this strategy, their grade marks have improved, and they express that it is easier to reference real meanings in their native language to English.
I know that every student has different learning methods, but I was not fully aware of that until I began tutoring students with diverse backgrounds and abilities. The recognition of distinctive strategies among students is a powerful indication that we should concentrate on individualized success.
My old cheat sheets for political science, haha. Every color represents a different chapter. On exam days, I can recall where the term is within the color-coded paragraphs/words.
