Something I find interesting about SU and how it sticks to the Steven only perspective is how we managed to overlook Steven for so long.

I can say this as someone who adores Steven now, but used to really overlook him. If you asked me pre-movie who my favorite was, I would’ve said Pearl, Garnet, Lapis, or Amethyst before I consider Steven. This isn’t to say that he was a bad or boring character, but due to the narrative it was easy to overlook him.

In a way, I think this was the point. Steven is focusing on everyone but himself. The audience will then focus on everyone else because even when Steven has a problem, it’s swept under the rug so easily under the guise of oh, look at cute, happy Steven, he’ll be fine. Even when we were concerned for him, he, thus the narration, and the audience, would quickly turn attention away.

I think that’s a factor in the shift in tone and focus in Future. We begin to realize that Steven, despite being the character the show is named after, hasn’t really had time to shine like the others, at least we don’t consider it because he’s like our camera. And no one really considers the camera man. So when the other characters begin to spend more time away, y'know, everyone we, just like Steven, had focused on instead of him, the cracks start to show. Just like the cracks started to show for Steven in-universe. We suddenly had nothing but time to notice how fucked up Steven’s childhood was and revaluate how we view the original series.

Basically, this show did a good job at bringing us along for the ride and showing us the world through Steven’s eyes.

Something really interesting i actually learned in regards to steven universe is that despite the show always focusing solely on steven’s perspective Rebecca sugar and other writers actually wrote entire episodes and interactions between other characters that would never be animated or released due to the fact that steven was not present for it and the show was always from Steven’s perspective

Thank you Steven Universe for being the beacon of light that has helped me through the highs and lows of the past 7 years. This show has helped me through so much, and even helped me find my calling in life. Without this show I never would have realized that I wanted to become an animator!

This show has changed my life and the very fact that it ends today is enough to make me start tearing up.
