Moon totally looked like a villain in the DLC, holding Sun hostage in their eternal night

In retaliation to being held hostage by SUN in never ending DAY and eternal sleep of his own for who knows how long because of what the Afton Virus and Fazco combined did to them.

Sun was just the first one to realize—after being in Moon’s place—that in order to fix their relationship that he needed to somehow get them rebooted to reset their active state so they’d be forced to become Eclipse, whole, again.

Being AI, they can communicate and work things out inside their head and have a full on heart-to-heart in just a few millisecond.

You know how someone condensed the whole Bee Movie into a gif? *WARNING FOR FAST FLASHING IMAGES*

That’s how quick that conversation probably was.

And it worked with how tired yet content Sun sounded when he spoke up alone to thank Cassie at the end.

And according to Kellen

You know what Twin? I WILL KEEP GOING

I'VE GOT A LOT OF STUFF TO SAY ABOUT THE DAYCARE ATTENDANT!!!!!

BUCKLE IN BECAUSE THIS IS LOOOOOOOOOONG

First and foremost we have very few SOLID FACTS about them but also we know A LOT about them merely by their Looks and their mannerisms alone

If we consider all the books to be canon (i always prefer to take the book lore with a grain of salt) than we know for a fact that Sun and Moon used to work as the animatronic in charge of the Superstar theater. This is also backed by the fact that golden versions of their face mimicing the comedy and tragedy masks (aka one of the most famous symbol of theater and performance) adorn the top of the door to the theater

We're never told more about this. Not what kind of preformances they did or what roles each would play in these shows or even how long ago they ran the theater. We're left to assume. And given their personalities and voices its pretty easy to see who was who in the shows

Sun, higher pitched voice, loud and cheery demeanor, has a friendly air upon meeting him

While Moon has red eyes, a deep and raspy voice and sinister giggle, less bouncy and more curved and looming.

The answer is obvious. A hero and a villain

A perfectly designed preformee that can switch from the good guy to the bad guy in the flick of a light switch. That alone. Regardless of how long they preformed in the theater is enough to cause some kind of strain between them

Because when kids see a bad guy in a play. Not all of them are gonna realize it was just pretend

Automatically Moon is going to have a harder time interacting with kids merely by design

But hey thats bareable. He still gets to preform. Play his part and enjoy his (scripted and certainly far more frequent) time out and about as Moon. He wasn't always locked away

Until one day, he was

Imagine finding out that suddenly you're being moved from your area, your ocupation, your entire PURPOSE and are now told that instead of running the theater, you're going to run the daycare

Imagine just how much BOTH of them struggled with the shift into the daycare. They're ACTORS, meant to play a part on a stage and experienced from a distance, not handling a large amount of children up close and continuously.

That's the most obvious possible set up for an identity crisis as well as tension between the two over the change in occupation/location. Even if they weren't mad at eachother they're bound to accidentally fight due to the tension from the situation

Now for the kicker. If my memory serves me correctly. While reprogramming Sun for the daycare, Moon wasn't supposed to even be a part of the daycare. He was supposed to be deleted. Imagine that. You get RIPPED from your life and your purpose with no say because you're merely seen as property. And then they decide to delete YOU. Not your other half. Just you. But instead, they mess up your programing and now you're stuck playing the villain PERMANENTLY. Stuck viciously stalking the bulding for a limited time each hour just so you're broken violent programming will be put to use.

That's enough to fuck up any kind of relationship. Especially one that may have already been strained. Moon was basically considered useless, unwanted, and they TRIED TO DELETE HIM. Im certain both sun and moon were aware of that

Of course Sun probably wasn't happy about it. And of course Moon being seemingly unstoppably violet as a result of his now damaged programming didn't help anything. I seriously doubt Sun enjoys keeping Moon at bay, especially as his bitterness and resentment festered over who knows how long. But he had no choice. Just like he wasn't given a choice to stay in the theater. Because if he steps out of line, goes against the grain, Fazbear entertainment will probably judt scrap them. Build a new animatronic specifically for the daycare who could do their job better than they can. (which I theorize was the original intent when the daycare was constructed but thats another can of worms)

He CAN'T side with Moon, CAN'T change their situation, and CAN'T let Moon out or else they'll be as good as dead. He's presented as the friendly and helpful one. Literally FORCED to play the good guy but you just know fighting Moon, keeping his other side at bay, and having to smile through it all just tears him apart.

Both trapped in a terrible situation where Sun if forced to choose Between Moon's freedom and their very lives.

Noy even considering how being 2 different AI in a singular body probably makes it VERY VERY hard to discern where Sun stops and Moon starts. The lines of their very identities blurred by their very existence

But as I said in the tags, Moon isn't exactly a villain. And Sun isn't exactly a good guy and the prime example of this is Gregory and Cassie

When Gregory first shows up in the Daycare Sun is quick to greet him and Jump straight into attendant mode

You're sure up late! Are we having a slumber party? Where are all your friends?"

The Daycare wouldn't HAVE slumber parties and Sun is likely more than aware of that. He asks about Gregory's friend because he's quick to notice he's alone. A child in the daycare WAY past Closing (and pretty close to when the lights go out since right after turning on the generators Moon comes back) he is more than aware that Gregory is in danger (and probably big trouble with security)

But he makes no indication that he's calling Vanessa or the other animatronics to help Gregory get back to his family or to a human adult who can contact his parents.

Instead he starts suggesting activities. Things to keep him busy (asusmably for a while)

"We can finger paint, tell stories, drink Fizzy Faz until our heads ex-PLODE and stay up all night!"

Things that hint that they would take a while (once again a little uncomfortably close to lights out)

Casting all that aside under the assumption he probably informed the other animatronics (which would explain why they're all outside the daycare when he kicks Gregory out)

He still seems primarily focused on keeping Gregory entertained. Not safe, or taken care of, or even assuring him its gonna be okay or that they'll get him back to his family. He's focused on telling Gregory they're going to have fun.

We read about a rather serious complaint about Sun and Moon in the logs we find in the game and its probably a safe bet there are at least a few more. They've had trouble before. And once again its highly likely Sun is trying his best to keep them from getting decommissioned which probably explains why he's trying to get Gregory to have fun. That way even if he IS returned to his family there won't be another complaint against them and another possible reason to get rid of him and Moon.

I think its also why he's so anxious when Gregory goes behind the Security desk

What does he say?

"New friend, this area is o-off-limits. You're gonna get us in trouble..."

That. That is the very first line we here any kind of serious anxiety from Sun. Yes he frets a bit about cleaning up the mess Gregory made. But this is when he starts bargaining. Trying to coax Gregory away from there. Why? Two possible reasons. The first being the lightswitch and how Gregory could easily cause Moon to appear.

But the other reason is plain and simple, he literally says it. Hes gonna get them in trouble

Not Sun and Gregory. No no no absolutely not. After all plenty of adults would jump in and say "He's judt a kid, he didn't know any better."and quickly point to the fact that SUN is the "adult" in the situation. He's supposed to be looking after Gregory.

No no no. Sun is anxious about Gregory doing something that'll get THEM in trouble. Him and Moon.

Sun and Moon who are in more trouble than they'd LIKE to be for reasons they can't help.

Not to mention how Sun tugging at his face plate and making noises seems to indicate he's fighting Moon from coming out

The second the lights are back on he's all to eager to BAN Gregory from the daycare. Afterall, a kid who can't follow the single and most important rule??? Way too deteimental to their very existence whether he means to be or not.

He threw Gregory to the wolves (albeit he probably didn't know about the other animatronics being dangerous for Gregory) but that simple interaction kind of showed a lot about Sun. He's trying to be good and pretend everythings fine. Hes playing the part he was assigned

And that's just in the main game

The DLC only shows their fractured relationship further

With the entire Pizzaplex being in Disarray. The lights in most places completely nonfunctional. It doesn't have to be pitch black for Moon to come out. And it's likely that by a certain point Both Sun and Moon realized the pizzaplex ISN'T going to reopen

The entire building is in shambles, large chunks of the daycare have been disassembled (doubtfully either of them had a hand in that) and remains of endos and staff bots are littered everywhere. Even if a sort of light cycle/power cycle DID remain

Once Moon realized there's no one coming to decommission them, and no one to stop him from coming out, he probably destroyed the lights overhead and made sure it stayed dark in the daycare. And it's likely that he was the one out and present for a LONG time. The pizza plex in the dlc has obviously been closed for months if not a good year or so.

It's certainly been long enough for Moon to completely take over the daycare, putting up countless drawings (some of which are of him sun and even eclipse)

It's HIS daycare now. As he Has Sun "Trapped in a nap" and seemingly even in the AR world is taking over, not letting Sun even ask for help.

It's unclear whether sun being in a "nap" is just Moon being out constantly or if he's actively shutting down Sun in a more literal sleep mode so he doesn't have to keep fighting for control but in the dlc it is undeniable that Moon wants the lights off and wants Sun GONE

After what was likely YEARS of being trapped inside his own body, not even meant to continue existing. Unwanted and failed to be deleted, trapped in his own mind like a prison by his other half

Even if none of it was Sun's fault its no wonder Moon held some sort of resentment for Sun. After years of being stuck and locked away, he'd likely be scared of Sun coming back out. Who KNOWS when Sun would let Moon out again?? He probably trapped Sun in a nap so HE wouldn't be forced back into the background

And in doing so Sun got to experience what Moon lived through. Instead of being retrieved by someone at Fazbear entertainment they were left to rot with the rest of the pizzaplex. And they're not stupid, they both probably realize that. Sun was thrown away just as much as Moon was, even after doing everything right. After doing what he was told. After fighting Moon back into their mind for YEARS

Abandoned, broken, and trapped in his own body. He FINALLY can understand a part of Moon he probably never could before. And whether it be because of a grudge, or a fear of being thrown back into a cage of their own body, Moon refuses to let Sun back in and have a chance to repair things

So in the DLC, upon seeing Cassie, once again Sun isn't concerned about safety or the fact that there's a child in a dangerous condemned building. He's not putting on an act in an attempt to play his role. He's anxious, and frantic, and desperate. Because he now knows how terrible it is to be stuck in that situation and he wants to change it.

To change THEM

To make things right with Moon one way or another. But he can't do that with Moon pushing him back into the recesses of their mind. So he has Cassie turn on the generators

He tells her, they "need to be whole"

Because after everything they've been through. Everything they've put EACHOTHER through. Theyre broken and mistrusting and hurt. Even if Moon DID let Sun out of his nap they'd still be broken. Their relationship fractured and damaged in a way that could never work if they keep fighting for the chance to come out and EXIST

Even though they were forcibly thrown into this dynamic, where they're constantly at war, deep down they don't want to be.

If they DID Sun wouldn't have told Cassie to reboot them, he would have told her to find a way to get more lights on

He would have fought Moon for control

And if MOON wanted to keep fighting Eclipse wouldn't have happened.

Because when they first reboot we see that moment when they reboot even the subtitles show that it's MOON'S voice making those struggling noises

Before he slumps over and they become Eclipse

That reboot forced Moon to be vulnerable just long enough for them to talk things out in a few milliseconds just like Twin said

Then in a flash they're ECLIPSE

Suddenly there's no more struggle, no sign of Sun or Moon

Their features are combined with one eye glowing Yellow and the other glowing red (this is also when their arms start glowing)

Instead of one out and running the show they're moving themselves TOGETHER they're whole again. The pieces of both of them ever present, with their Rays moving like Sun's, their voice is soft and kind of lulling (a little reminiscent of Moon’s whisper like hiss)

And even the way they move is duch an amalgamation of them both

Whereas Sun was once bouncy and swayed, filled with energy and playfullness, and Moon was once Lower to the ground, tiptoeing and creeping along

They both combine together in a smooth gliding movement, gentle and grand with the way Eclipse opens their arms and then clasps their hands. The way they glide slowly and steadily on the wire to take Cassie to the exit

Eclipse is them together. Eclipse is them WHOLE and complete and in harmony, balance. No longer at war with eachother and finally at peace

I feel like the line about needing to clean up before they can open and how it will be flooded with kids isn't quite about the daycare

If Sun and Moon have been at odds for so long they likely haven't been whole enough together to BE Eclipse

It's very likely they were talking about the theater. Their Minds going back to the last time they were one like that

Kellen Goff their voice actor also had a comment on Twitter about keeping the lights Dim (not ON Not OFF. But dim) and where are lights often Dimmed??? In the theater, just before the spotlight lights up the stage

With no one keeping them trapped in the daycare, and no pressure to play the roles they were assigned they're free to EXIST together. Not fight over the right to simply be there. They're finally free to have peace

I really wish we got to see more of them, especially with the Daycare attendant as a whole being such a stand out character

Like. Don't get me wrong, people LOVE the glamrocks and the other characters in Security Breach. But Sun and Moon became a sort of breakout pair with just how much fan content was made of them. Like. I've seen a LOT of Fnaf AUs before But the fanfics and content and Community surrounding sun and moon specifically feels like its on a whole other level

And part of that is because of how severely under utilized they were

And that brief glimpse of them which sparked such a heavy love of the characters is tragically a possible reason why their appearance in the DLC was ALSO brief. Because when a character is THAT popular, no matter what you do a good chunk of people wont like it.

But i REALLY really really hope we see different variations of Sun and Moon in any future FNAF endeavors because the potential for the two not only as characters but as possible game mechanics and stories later is LIMITLESS

And I think that's why so many of us have latched on

Like. There's so many subtle nuances and hints about their personalities and why they are the way they are but they're so in the background that a lot of people don't even notice

So many players both casual and hardcore seem to simply skip over them and what they truly are. Simply breezing through their brief time on stream with the simplified message of "Moon Guy is evil and the Sun Guy is Silly"

Instead of seeing the underlying tragedy of their very existence that forced them into those exact roles

TLDR: Moon and Sun aren't good or evil they're broken and healing
