"It will be fine!" She said. "There's things much worse than that. And it will end soon!"
You still can't get why you keep believing her.
College is already a nerve-wracking place to deal with it, increasing even more in junior year. You need to work on your assignments, do presentations, fight yourself everyday to not procrastinate 24/7 or call off sick 'cause your bed is too appealing. And in the end, you always freak out with your final exams, coffee becoming your best friend and clock your worst enemy.
So, why, in such a mad environment, do you still need to do group work?
And why, of all the people on campus, you got paired up with Iwaizumi Hajime?
It's not that you hate him, but his face alone makes you want to change sidewalks even if the traffic light is green and Formula 1 is happening on Myagi streets.
It all started with a single bump on the cafeteria entrance. His unnecessary hard body bumped against your hot chocolate cup, making all of your precious drink spill and fall into your new white All Stars sneakers, staining the fabric and burning your skin to the soul.
And he had the nerve to say "You need to watch where you're going" before giving a quick apology and leaving.
You never forget it, refusing one day later to lend him your notes of an important class, right before exams. It's not your fault that his bicycle tire got pierced on the way, he should have been prepared and woken up early like every poor student in this college.
This "not so pleasant but still fulfilling" war has been going on for a few months. But unfortunately, his presence became more than a nuisance to you, and you absolutely detest the way your heart quickens flustered as you see the punk walking on the hall.
Annoying, handsome, punk.
And since Ana, you're "so called" best friend, knows about your hidden feelings, she decided to come up with a stupid solition for it.
You, her, Iwaizumi and Bokuto Koutaro, her adorable but very much compelling boyfriend, were supposed to do the group project together at a cozy cafeteria a few blocks from the campus main building, known for their delicious milkshakes and pretzels.
Nowhere to escape, you accept the invite, hoping your friend could take your mind away from Iwaizumi's intruding.
But suddenly, Bokuto shouts.
"Shoot, I forgot there was practice today." His exclaim was so exaggerated, he totally has no vocation to be an actor.
"Oh yeah, Kou, that slipped of my mind too. Sorry guys, but we need to go." Ana announces, not sad at all, Bokuto taking her backpack with him like a perfect gentleman. "Please enjoy our milkshakes, we'll text you later to see what you guys decide!"
"Good dat— I mean…. Bye!" Bokuto takes her hand and storms away from the cafeteria.
You sigh, disappointed at yourself for not predicting this might happen.
"Did they really leave us?" Iwaizumi asks incredulously, noticing the filled notebooks the couple left on the table. "They even made their parts already!"
"Look, I'm not thrilled to work with you either, but the faster we start, the faster we'll get rid of each other." You established with an annoyed look, taking a sip of Ana's untouched strawberry milkshake. "Now take the milkshake and be quiet."
He protests, and you both get into a routine of silence, bickering at each other and silence again, through the whole one hour you spent together trying to work on the project. But with the following hour, you guys start to agree with each other, finding your suggestions "smarter than expected".
It's strange to agree with Hajime on something, but you can see that he's trying his best to be peaceful. This nice and compelling side looks actually cute on him, not that you have been gazing sideways at him every now and then. So you decide to be nice too, for the sake of good grades.
Twenty minutes later, and you're arguing again.
"The information needs to be in Z. No one will pay attention if you fill the poster with notes all over it!" He argues one more time, trying to prove his point about the best position to the notes.
"But we need to put all the information we gathered! If we do in your way, we'll need three more cardboards, and that's waste of paper!" You defend your point too.
"You're the one who thinks everything must be there, when it doesn't."
"Well, maybe I'm the only one who wants a perfect score on this project!"
You're both breathing heavily and quicker, like two bulls ready to attack each other. Thank goodness you're in a distant booth, you guys would probably be kicked out by now for the shouting.
Hajime runs his hand over his brown hair, tired of this unfinished argument. "You're too insufferable, you know that?"
"And you're so stubborn, that I can't stand on my head anymore." You let it slip the last part by account, but he's too angry to understand the real meaning.
"Well, I wish you could leave mine too, but you're still there every day!"
Now that, is something that shouldn't have slipped.
Your heart's pace fasten, and you suddenly feel numb, flustered by his unexpected confession. Iwaizumi doesn't meet your eyes anymore, staring at the table with a terrified look, his face reddening as the seconds go by.
"I—" He tries to cover it while he still can." I didn't—"
"What?" But you don't want room for excuses. "You didn't mean you like me?"
His eyes widen. "N-no I…. I…." He sighs. "Argh, I didn't mean to say it like that! But if you really want to know, yes, I like you. "He gazes directly at you. "Even if you get on my nerves every single day, I can't get you out of my head. And… and you're much more than a nuisance to me. You're not a nuisance at all."
You stare at him, perplexed and trying to digest his words. Hajime takes that as a rejection.
"I should go." He begins to rise from his chair, but you quickly hold one of his wrists, preventing him from moving away. He looks at you surprised.
"Would you find it strange if I said that you're not a nuisance either?" You can't say the right words aloud yet, but the growing smile on his face assures you have to now.
"I guess I own you a hot chocolate, then?"
