I've been researching about genies and had a hard time finding information. All I know is that genies are originally from arabs whom they called jinns. There are five types I think of jinns but I can't seem to look for the type of "Genie in Aladdin" is. Can you expound on this research topic? I can't seem to find the difference of a jinn (eastern) and the genie (western). Thanks for the help.
Genie and jinn are the same things. The plural of jinn (or djinn) is jinni, which English bastardized to genie.
Jinn were like people, except made of a different material and much larger. The lore says Allah made people out of clay and jinn out of smokeless flame. The jinn could be good, evil, or neutral, just as people could. According to the Quran, jinni will be judged on Judgement Day and sent to Heaven or Hell for their deeds, as people will be. Jinni also have free will, like humans, and have a society involving kings, weddings, and courts of law. With all the powers the Quran attribute to jinni, it’s not unbelievable that a jinn could grant wishes. Among other things, the jinni could transform into animals, travel distances at great speed, mimic human voices, and become invisible.
If I were to classify the jinn in Aladdin, I would probably call him a Marid. Marida (plural Marid) are the most powerful type of genie. They are also very arrogant and enjoy exercising their free will, but flattery can make them perform basic chores. You could also wring wishes out of a Marid by battling them, enslaving them, or by performing a special ritual. You can find out more about Marida here, here, and here.
people always have trouble thinking of good wishes from genies. but i know what i would wish for: to always have enough. enough food, enough money, enough love, enough happiness. i don’t need excess. just enough.
