Hey everyone!! Did you know that this August is the third annual Fat Liberation Month? The month is organized by NAAFA (National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance), and it's something I didn't know about until I randomly wondered earlier this year if we have a month for our movement, and looked it up. I've never seen anyone talk about it, so I want to change that!!

Through the month of August, I'm going to be drawing lots of fat art, and I would encourage any artists who see this post to do the same. Draw body types you've never tried drawing before! Draw bodies that are bigger than society's "acceptable" level of fatness! Use references (fatphotoref, Morpho Fat and Skin Folds, my own Pinterest reference board)! Perhaps even draw yourself with complete honesty, without trimming out the parts of yourself that make you self conscious, to help better understand and accept your body!

If you participate in this event, please tag your fat art with #Fat Liberation Month, so that I can see and share your work. Have fun and help spread the visibility for this really cool and underrepresented event! 🎉✨

If anybody is needing inspiration for what to draw during Fat Liberation Month, FPB has put together a prompt list for you!

Enjoy drawing!

i still find it so genuinely Weird when i think about the fact that fat people irl are a rather common occurrence. your family, your friends, your coworkers, people on the bus, random passerbys - there are fat people there. usually often. but when you look at Any form of media - movies, tv shows, video games, books are more complicated as not a visual medium but there too, fat people are almost nonexistent. one fat person for the whole movie. one fat person in the background of your fictional city. this is so insanely unrealistic but at the same time nobody comments on this and "we" accept it as normal!! and then people even think their own fatness makes them into some rare failure instead of one of the incredibly common body situations. crazy

Weight dissatisfaction, which has risen dramatically over the last decade or so, has been linked to higher blood pressure and glucose levels, a greater risk of metabolic disease, higher body-mass indexes (BMIs), more disordered eating, lower self-esteem, and what one study described as “generally diminished quality of life.” In fact, says Christine E. Blake, a professor at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina, even relatively short-lived weight dissatisfaction predicts higher levels of type 2 diabetes many years later. One possible explanation of the phenomenon is that people who are overweight or obese are naturally more dissatisfied with their bodies, and it’s the weight rather than the dissatisfaction that leads to health problems. Not so, says Blake, whose 2013 study compared women in the same BMI categories as well as across the weight spectrum. She found that “normal”-weight women who were unhappy with their weight had higher blood pressure and fasting glucose levels than “normal”-weight women who were fine with their bodies. The same held true for people across every BMI category.
