He was avenging Patroklos, his friend, whom Hektor had killed.” The boy considered this intently. “He was his best friend of all?" “Yes, from when they were boys together.” Why didn’t Achilles save him first, then?”
Mary Renault, Fire From Heaven.

So who gonna tell little Alexander that Achilles was cause of Patroclus' death? 🥲

𝙀𝘿𝙄𝙏- nvm, he came to that conclusion quite easily.

“He was stopped by the boy’s shocked stare. ,...“He couldn’t do that! He was a general! And he sent a junior officer; when he wouldn’t go! It was his fault Patroklos died.” “Oh, yes, he knew. He had sacrificed him to his pride. That was why he fulfilled his death-fate.”

Reading Iliad and achilles rage and grief has spoiled "dead gf, mad bf and vice versa plot for me🥲 like you assuming I'm gonna read someone else crying for their beloved and not compare it to achilles? You think I'm gonna see someone on warpath and not compare it to achilles? No way!

Am I a bad person if i liked It when Hektor died? No no, not what Achilles did to his body after he died, not that part, it's revolting. But his death... I liked it. Hector thinking to give Helen back to Agrives to stop this madness, before the battle, but he and we all know it's too late for that ofc it is. Then him thinking about how he didn't listen to polydamas, his own pride is now bringing his death.

But Gods if Priam's and Hecabe's lament was not tough to read! And then Hector's wife, Andromache...like fuck! fuck! fuck! I don't have words to describe it 😭I hate war!

ooh Lycaon begging Achilles to not kill him and Achilles denying his request, saying now that Patroclus is dead he won't spare anyone. Honestly, I get it now, I get why the opening line of this epic is about Achilles rage, I get now, why homer says "𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘖 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘦, 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 Wrath 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘴" I get why he says his Rage brought so much suffering!

Not that I didn't before, but before reading this part it was just a fact. But while reading this part it hit me how he's gone so far in his grief. Wrath of God like Achilles indeed.
