some of you spoke to the police about what you believe you witnessed here yesterday. you wanna know my powers, know who i am, see what i can do. i’ll show you. think of the person you love most in your life. your wife, mother, daughter… now that person will know what it is to lose someone they love, and live with that pain. forever.

“For me one of the best clues is to check in how do these characters start the film and how do they finish. And what the filmmaker is setting up in the very first twenty minutes is often very clear setting of a marker. A marker from which the hope is that the characters you meet at the end of the picture would be very different from the characters you meet at the front. (…) If Logan is angry, closed off, shut in, self-medicating at the start of the film, the man at the final moments of the end of the film is going to be cracked open, full of heart, a hero, and even if it’s in his final moments of life, seeing the beauty of life, instead of the darkness in it. The other thing I’ve very much wanted to set up was the contrast that the arrival of Laura is going to bring to Logan’s world. And that the effort to create such a sense of grim hopelessness for Logan (…) at the beginning is also an effort to show what’s going to change when this little girl in a red trench coat arrives to his life.” (James Mangold from Logan Director’s Commentary)
