*ATTENTION BOOK LOVERS*
Or anybody into the idea of workers getting paid a livable wage - Half Price Books, which boasts of being the largest family-owned bookstore chain in the United States, has been extremely resistant in their contract negotiations with their employee union for 1.5 years now. This is after halving their staff post-pandemic and leaving the remaining to do double the work.
They are only willing to offer a 1% yearly wage increase and straight up told the union they CAN afford to pay them...but they WON'T. Because according to them, even employees who've been working for them for 5, 10, 20+ years are replaceable.
This is unacceptable. I call on anybody who lives in the States to sign this petition to put pressure on the CEO Sharon Anderson to pay her goddamn workers. Or even better, call the corporate number at 800-883-2114 to give them an earful.
If you don't live in the States, you can help by tagging the company on their Twitter & Instagram & Facebook and commenting about the contract negotiations under every one of their posts.

Blizzard employees are organizing a walkout this Wednesday (July 28, 2021) to protest the company’s absolute shit response to the sexual harassment lawsuit. If you’re still playing Activision/Blizzard games, tomorrow would be a good day to show solidarity with Blizzard workers by not playing those games. Don’t cross the digital picket line!! No WoW. No Call of Duty. No Overwatch. Bring Blizzard and Activision’s online engagement down and boost the hashtag #actiblizzwalkout

The attendance for the walkout was MASSIVE!
However in response to this quick organizing of its employees, Blizzard has hired the union-busting firm WilmerHale, which is the same firm that Amazon uses to keep its workers from unionizing.
The fight is no longer simply a PR crisis with the horrifically misogynistic working environment coming to light, but is now Blizzard coming down hard on any attempts of its employees to organize and improve their working conditions.

Gaggle is one of a handful of creepy companies that sell surveillance software to school districts, which monitor every keystroke and click on school networks – they’re the latest evolution in spy-on-kids tech, which started off by promising that they’d stop kids from seeing porn, then promised they could end bullying, and now advertise themselves as a solution for school shootings, under the banner of being a “Safety Management Platform.”
Gaggle has plenty of competition from the likes of Securely and Goguardian. The whole sector has undergone a massive buzzword-compliance overhaul and added “AI” to their products, using algorithms to decide which student keystrokes are worthy of being flagged as suspicious.
But Gaggle appears to be unique in promising to help school board detect unrest among teachers so that the wave of teachers’ strikes can be headed off by management. In a deleted blog post, Gaggle wrote, “Think about the recent teacher work stoppage in West Virginia. Could the story have been different if school leaders there requested search results for ‘health insurance’ or ‘strike’ months earlier? Occasional searches for ‘salary’ or ‘layoffs’ could stave off staff concerns that lead to adverse press for your school district.”
It’s a great example of the shitty technology adoption curve: first we use creepy technology against people who don’t get to complain, like schoolkids, then, once it’s normalized, we work our way up the privilege gradient, inflicting it on teachers, then everyone.

The YouTubers Union just merged with IG Metall, the largest independent trade union IN THE WORLD (2.3 MILLION members) under a joint venture. If successful, it will cause a domino effect across all tech companies, causing a mass of unionization against companies across silicon valley, like Google, Facebook, etc.
And you know who’s leading the charge?

- Transparency in how videos are flagged by bots, and why they were specifically blocked/demonization
- Clear rules, exact reasoning on choices made by YouTube
- No more more “machine” responces for counter claims and challenges, demanding an actual human representative
- Independent dispute resolution. A 3rd neutral party to help lay judgement on serious claims
- Participation. Giving a voice on YouTube policy to YouTubers
They have given YouTube 4 weeks to enter negotiations with them over this.
