This is in willow charcoal on smooth newsprint, with 4b charcoal pencil accents. Willow on newsprint is my favourite way to draw and I can't recommend it enough. It's very fragile, but it's also very forgiving - just swipe at it with your finger and it disappears or you get an atmospheric shadow. If you're into art but haven't tried it... do! It also has the advantage of being very cheap. But the main thing for me is that it's very organic - you can really see and feel the life in it. It's like there's less of a barrier between you and the art. That's not to say it makes things easy - you still have to put in the hours and accept frustration! But I love it.

When no good deed goes unpunished, Dean ends up sentenced to community service for physically defending another Omega at his job. That is, at his former job. It’s all a steaming pile of shit, and that’s exactly what he has to clean up at the joint animal shelter and clinic he’s been assigned to. With a face full of allergies and a horrific mood, all Dean has to do is get through six weeks of this sinus-assaulting torture. That’s not so easy with a smartass Alpha receptionist, but at least the weird Beta vet might just end up being kinda cool.
I love A/B/O fics that play with the trope, and so of course this fic was going to end up on my list. This fic is full of misunderstandings that are by turns angsty and hilarious, but it’s so much fun watching Dean and Cas develop a relationship that’s primarily built on a huge misunderstanding.
Ben is always so good at putting twists into his fics, and this one is no different. Dean works through his community service at the clinic/shelter, which is actual torture for him, seeing as his sinuses immediately clog with allergies, making it impossible for him to smell anything. This leads to tons of hijinks with the strange vet, Cas, who also works at the clinic/shelter.
Throughout this fic, Dean is fiercely independent and headstrong. He absolutely will take no crap from anyone. Cas, meanwhile, is considering and compassionate, and willing to take a step back and admit when he was wrong. His soft edges match up with Dean’s hard ones, and that makes them a perfect match. Apart from everything ELSE going on that also makes them a perfect match.
Fans of A/B/O will find a ton of the popular tropes, while those who might be a little leery over traditional A/B/O stories will find a refreshing take on the genre. This fic is fun and the ending will definitely make you smile (in more ways than one!).

That fucking red neckerchief—that’s what started this whole thing. I still have it. Don’t even know if Cas would remember, but I couldn’t just leave it to the wind and the wildlands. Maybe I should’ve. Maybe that’s where it belongs, just like Cas. Damn foolish tryin’ to hold onto things not meant to be held. Like tryin’ to catch a stormcloud with a lasso. Lightning in a bottle.
