More and more, it's becoming clear that I'll never have the same kind of connection as someone who was actually raised on the coast and had the opportunity to pursue related careers and hobbies from a young age. I honestly don't know how to deal with the fact that I will never be as close no matter what I do.

Is it delusional to believe I ever felt a calling in the first place, when there are so many people in a better position to be called?

...You know what, sure, I can incorporate that into my belief system.

Does the ocean need a reason to call someone? Does your love and respect for the ocean matter less than one who lives closer? Does a connection need to be the deepest and most intimate to matter? About 3 billion years ago, the whole earth was ocean. There were no continents. Just water on crust that eventually built up to form the land we live on. Does the ocean forget?

sometimes it baffles me how far away the ocean is for some people. Like, I'm from Denmark, and you can't be more than 52km away from it anywhere in the country and I just end up sitting here like staring at my wall overcome with the realization that some places are Really Big and also Really Far Away

I have to drive 900 miles for the NEAREST ocean.

Oh. Oh no! I'm Norwegian and this SHOULD have occured to me, but no. *Freaks out* no ocean? Nearby??? Only land?????

Well we have a very large river about 1/4 mile from where I sit and if you drive a couple hours some very large lakes that sorta count as freshwater inland seas, but aside from that just land.

Where I live, the closest ocean is 800 miles (1287km) away. But we have huge lakes that are similar visually in the sense that you can't see the other side. It's really not the same, totally different feeling, smell, and mixed sense of fear and love but I do love our lakes. And Lake Superior/Gichigami def has a unique fear/awe factor to it

Hey so I know there is so much bad stuff going on rn with the Amazon and people trying to use the Spiderman stuff to take attention away from it, but over the past week The Florida Aquarium in Tampa has been able to successfully help coral reproduce in a lab. Which is amazing news because this ciuld literally help our oceans with the rising temperatures and bleaching of the corals. This could help bring back native corals and help our oceans thrive again.

A link for anyone interested in reading about it!

Walking along the shore

  1. Always walk barefoot. Take off your shoes. The beach wants to read your soul.
  2. If you come across a starfish, tell him about your deepest desire. He will point you in the right direction.
  3. A dog might run up to you when you are all alone on the beach. Let him walk with you for a while.
  4. Sand is the combination of sea and land. In ancient times, the sea gods and land gods used to meet here. Sometimes they still do.
  5. Mermaids are real. You might not see them but they see you.
  6. If you see baby sea turtles hatch, keep your distance and keep an eye out for predators. Help them make it to the sea. You will receive a favor.
  7. If something is calling you from far out at sea, ignore it. Keep walking.
  8. The waves wash away bad feelings. Place both hands over your heart and put the feeling inside your hands. Carefully place it on the sand, close enough to the sea so the waves can reach it. The waves will grow stronger for a few minutes. Thank the waves.
  9. Pick up a shell and hold it close to your ear. Shell spirits love telling stories. Especially about Charles, a fisherman who has been living on his rowboat for over 70 years and has not set foot on land ever since. They love him.
  10. An island might appear out of nowhere and slowly grow closer. You are not imagining it.
  11. Heed the seagulls’ warning.
  12. Pick up some seaweed and bring it back home. It is a key ingredient in many potions.

I am currently rowing toward the island but the waves are growing more and more violent. Something does not want me near. - Bob

Now a group of scientists at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is working to restore the “iconic” kelp reefs.
Kelp forests have been the main force in forming the habitat on reefs around temperate Australia, and have been home to hundreds of species of animals and plants.
But the underwater forests have come under stress in recent years due to ocean warming, urbanisation and pollution.

A Sea Witches’ Guide to Ethical Seashelling

Hello and Merry Met fellow sea and water witches. A while back when I was snorkeling for shells for my altar I got asked, “is it really okay to take shells from the beach? isn’t that unethical and harmful?” So, heres my answer I gave to share with you guys in more depth. (DISCLAIMER: THESE RULES ALSO ARE UNDER THE ASSUMPTION IT IS LEGAL TO COLLECT SHELLS ON YOUR BEACH. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK)

1. Know What Shells to Take and Leave - In Pensacola we have plenty of Olives, Augers, Whelks, and conches. Though so tempting and pretty its better to leave fully intact conches and spiral shells. These can serve as perfect potiential homes for any shore or tidal dwelling creatures. I’m sure youd be mad too if someone took your potential home cause they thought it looked cool. Also see what shells are most abundant. For me I saw piles upon piles of Olives snorkeling so they were my biggest grabs.

2. Make Sure They Are Empty - Hermit crabs and especially augurs are VERY good at hiding deep in shells. Always make sure you triple check and even if you still are unsure, leave it behind. Better safe than sorry. Another thing is if you come across a shell that is occupied in a crowded beach area try to move it so another diver or kid wont take it away.

3. Avoid Shells in Shops - If you can. Normally if they arent fake or plastic, the perfect seashells you see in stores were collected with the occupant ripped out. It’s just sad and not right.

4. Bring an offering for the Ocean - Before taking anything from the ocean bring her something and ask permission. If you ever take something from the ocean be sure to give something back to her in return.

Thank you for reading. Good luck and Blessed Be 🌊

If we're lucky, my s/o and I might be able to go to his parents house (not exactly lucky on that bit) and see the ocean in North Carolina~ it's been about 10 years since I've been to any ocean at all. I'm not sure how long it's been for him. It's not exactly ideal circumstances but the travel expenses would be covered by his folks and we have no idea when we'd be able to travel for a change of pace again.

The Sea Organ is an experimental musical instrument that is located in Zadar, Croatia. Beneath the white marble steps, a series of tubes create a system that could be described as a large piano. When the waves or the wind flow through the holes, they interact with the organ to create random harmonic sounds. (Source)

You can listen to the sounds that the Sea Organ produces here.
